Sri Krishna is the God of Gods whose enchanting bravados & tantrums stole everyone’s hearts. He was the heart-throb of the Gopikas, the One who narrated the Bhagavad Gita to Arjuna, the envoy of the Pandavas, the One who served Kuchela and the Master of the world. Lord Krishna’s divine Avatar began on the eighth day of Krishna Paksha in Shravana month. For those who follow the Saura Panchangam (Meaning: Solar calendar), Janmashtami is celebrated on Rohini Nakshatra of Krishna Paksha Shravana month. The midnight of Ashtami, when the Nakshatra was Rohini, was the divine moment when the Remover of all sins incarnated on this earth, as per Madhwacharya. In Kali Yuga, performing puja for Krishna is the ultimate solution for all spiritual and materialistic desires. Hence, the puja observance of Janmashtami night is very holy. After a bath in the morning, the Pujas are to be observed in similar fashion as Yekadashi. In the evening, on moonrise, naivedya preparations made out of butter like Chakkili, Unde, Kadubu are offered to the Lord and the Moon God.

Puja Procedure:

Sri Gopalakrishna preranaya Gopalakrishna preetyartham Janmashtamee vratangatwena Srikrishna pujapurvakam arghya pradanamaham karishye.
Chant this slokha as Sankalpa and perform Shankapuja, Kalashapuja, Abhishekam etc. and chant Vishnu Sahasranamam as Archane to the Lord.

Yajnaya yajnapataye yajnanAm samBhavAya cha |
YajnEshwarAya GopAya Govindaya namo namaha ||
Avatarasahasrani karoshi Madhusudana |
Na te sankhyavataranam kashchijjanati vai Bhuvi ||
Deva Brahmadayo vaou swarupam cha na vidustava |
Atastwam pujayishyami maturutsangasamsthitam |
Vanchitam kuru me deva samsarartibhayapaha ||

Offer your prayers with this above shloka and then, beside Krishna, Devaki must also be worshipped. The Mantra for that is as follows:-

Adithe Devamaatasthvam Sarvapaapa Pranaashini |
Atasthvaam Pujayishyaami bheetho Bhavahayaadaham ||

Pujithaa tvam Yadhaa Devaihi Prasanna tvam varaanane |
Pujithaa tvam Mayaa Bhatktyaa prasadam kuru suvute ||

Yadhaa putram Harim labdvaa praapta tvam nirvrutim me |
Taameva nirvrutim Devi suputre darshayasva me ||

Thus, Devaki must be worshipped. Also, Goddess Lakshmi who is merged in the feet of little Krishna, must be worshipped, naivedya Mangalaarathi must be performed.

Arghyapradaana:
Place the idol of Sri Krishna and a Saligrama in a silver/brass plate, hold Bilwa leaves & flowers, offer prayer with the following Shloka:
Krishnam cha Balabhadram cha Vasudevam cha Devakeem |
Yashodam Nandagopam cha Subhadram tatra pujayet ||

Pray to Sri Krishna and Sri Balarama, offer Bilwa leaves and hold the water-filled conch in the hand and recite the following Shloka:

Jataha KamsavadharthAya Bhubharaharanaya cha |
Kauravanam vinashaya daityanam nidhanaya cha ||
Pandavanam hitarthaya Dharmasamsthapanaya cha |
Gruhanarghyam maya dattam devakya sahito Hare ||

Devaki sahitaaya Chandramase idamarghyam idamarghyam idamarghyam |

After this chant, release water 3 times from conch onto plate.

Anena Arghyapradanena Madhwantargata gopalakrishnaha preeyatam ||
Perform arghyam chanting so, thrice and again offer Bilwa leaves after chanting “Krishnam Cha Balabhadram Cha…”

Then, offer Arghya to the Moon in front of the Tulasi Brindavan by placing another plate.

Hold Bilwa leaves in the hand and chant the following:
Shashine Chandradevaya Somadevaya chendave |
Sheetadeedhitibimbaya tarakapataye namaha ||

Offer the Bilwa leaves to the Tulasi plant, praying to the Moon god.
Recite:
Ksheerodarnavasambhuta atrinetra samudbhava |
Gruhanarghyam maya dattam Rohinya sahitaha shashin ||

Rohineesahitaya Chandramase idamarghyam idamarghyam idamarghyam |. Chant this line and release Arghya thrice of cow’s milk from a conch and recite again, “Shashine Chandradevaya….” and surrender yourselves to Krishna with offering Bilva leaves and Krishnarpanam.

ಶ್ರೀಕೃಷ್ಣಜನ್ಮಾಷ್ಟಮೀ

ಎಲ್ಲರ ಮನಸ್ಸನ್ನೂ ಸೂರೆಗೊಳ್ಳುವ ಲೀಲೆಯ ದೇವ, ದೇವದೇವ ಶ್ರೀಕೃಷ್ಣ. ಗೋಪಿಯರ ಒಡನಾಡಿಯಾಗಿ, ಗೀತೋಪದೇಶಕನಾಗಿ, ಪಾಂಡವರ ದೂತನಾಗಿ, ಕುಚೇಲನ ಸೇವಕನಾಗಿ ಜಗತ್ತಿಗೇ ಒಡೆಯನಾದವ ಶ್ರೀಕೃಷ್ಣ. ಶ್ರಾವಣಮಾಸದ ಕೃಷ್ಣಪಕ್ಷದ ಅಷ್ಟಮಿಯುಳ್ಳ
ಮಧ್ಯರಾತ್ರಿ ಈತನ ಜನ್ಮದಿನ. ಸೌರಪಕ್ಷೀಯರಿಗೆ ಶ್ರಾವಣ ಕೃಷ್ಣಾಷ್ಟಮಿಯಂದು ರೋಹಿಣಿಯಿಲ್ಲದಾಗ, ಸಿಂಹಮಾಸದ ಕೃಷ್ಣಾಷ್ಟಮಿಯಂದು ಹಬ್ಬದ ಆಚರಣೆ. ‘ಕೃಷ್ಣಪಕ್ಷದ ಅಷ್ಟಮೀದಿನ ಮಧ್ಯರಾತ್ರಿ ರೋಹಿಣೀಯಿದ್ದಲ್ಲಿ ಅದು ಸರ್ವಪಾಪನಾಶಕವಾದ ಜಯಂತಿಯೆಂಬ ಯೋಗ’ ಎಂದು ಮಧ್ವರ ನುಡಿ. ಕಲಿಯುಗದಲ್ಲಿ ಕೃಷ್ಣಪೂಜೆಯು ಹೆಚ್ಚು ಫಲದಾಯಕವಾದುದರಿಂದ ಕೃಷ್ಣಾಷ್ಟಮಿಯು ನಿತ್ಯವ್ರತ. ಇಂದು ಪ್ರಾತಃ-ಸ್ನಾನ ಪೂಜೆಗಳನ್ನು ಏಕಾದಶಿಯಂತೆಯೇ ಮಾಡಿ ರಾತ್ರಿ ಚಂದ್ರೋದಯಕ್ಕೆ ಮತ್ತೊಮ್ಮೆ ಮಿಂದು ಶ್ರೀಕೃಷ್ಣನಿಗೆ ಉಂಡೆ, ಚಕ್ಕುಲಿ, ಕಡುಬು, ಬೆಣ್ಣೆ ಮೊದಲಾದ ಭಕ್ಷ್ಯಗಳನ್ನು ಸಮರ್ಪಿಸಿ ಶ್ರೀಕೃಷ್ಣನಿಗೂ ಚಂದ್ರನಿಗೂ ಅರ್ಘ್ಯವನ್ನು ಕೊಡಬೇಕು.

ಪೂಜಾವಿಧಾನ:

ಶ್ರೀಗೋಪಾಲಕೃಷ್ಣಪ್ರೇರಣಯಾ ಗೋಪಾಲಕೃಷ್ಣಪ್ರೀತ್ಯರ್ಥಂ ಜನ್ಮಾಷ್ಟಮೀವ್ರತಾಂಗತ್ವೇನ ಶ್ರೀಕೃಷ್ಣಪೂಜಾಪೂರ್ವಕಮ್ ಅರ್ಘ್ಯಪ್ರದಾನಮಹಂ ಕರಿಷ್ಯೇ’ ಎಂದು ಸಂಕಲ್ಪಿಸಿ, ಶಂಖಪೂಜೆ, ಕಲಶಪೂಜೆ, ಅಭಿಷೇಕಾದಿಗಳನ್ನು ಮಾಡಿ ವಿಷ್ಣುಸಹಸ್ರನಾಮಗಳಿಂದ ಭಗವಂತನನ್ನು ಅರ್ಚಿಸಬೇಕು.

ಯಜ್ಞಾಯ ಯಜ್ಞಪತಯೇ ಯಜ್ಞಾನಾಂ ಸಂಭವಾಯ ಚ |
ಯಜ್ಞೇಶ್ವರಾಯ ಗೋಪಾಯ ಗೋವಿಂದಾಯ ನಮೋ ನಮಃ ||
ಅವತಾರಸಹಸ್ರಾಣಿ ಕರೋಷಿ ಮಧುಸೂದನ |
ನ ತೇ ಸಂಖ್ಯಾವತಾರಾಣಾಂ ಕಶ್ಚಿಜ್ಜಾನಾತಿ ವೈ ಭುವಿ ||
ದೇವಾ ಬ್ರಹ್ಮಾದಯೋ ವಾಪಿ ಸ್ವರೂಪಂ ನ ವಿದುಸ್ತವ |
ಅತಸ್ತ್ವಾಂ ಪೂಜಯಿಷ್ಯಾಮಿ ಮಾತುರುತ್ಸಂಗಸಂಸ್ಥಿತಮ್ ||
ವಾಂಛಿತಂ ಕುರು ಮೇ ದೇವ ಸಂಸಾರಾರ್ತಿಭಯಾಪಹ ||

ಈ ಶ್ಲೋಕಗಳಿಂದ ಪ್ರಾರ್ಥನೆಯನ್ನು ಸಲ್ಲಿಸಿ ಕೃಷ್ಣನ ಪಕ್ಕದಲ್ಲಿ ದೇವಕಿಯನ್ನು ಪೂಜಿಸಬೇಕು.

ಅಲ್ಲಿ ಮಂತ್ರ-

ಅದಿತೇ ದೇವಮಾತಸ್ತ್ವಂ ಸರ್ವಪಾಪಪ್ರಣಾಶಿನೀ |
ಅತಸ್ತ್ವಾಂ ಪೂಜಯಿಷ್ಯಾಮಿ ಭೀತೋ ಭವಹಯಾದಹಮ್ ||

ಪೂಜಿತಾ ತ್ವಂ ಯಥಾ ದೇವೈಃ ಪ್ರಸನ್ನಾ ತ್ವಂ ವರಾನನೇ |
ಪೂಜಿತಾ ತ್ವಂ ಮಯಾ ಭಕ್ತ್ಯಾ ಪ್ರಸಾದಂ ಕುರು ಸುವ್ರತೇ||

ಯಥಾ ಪುತ್ರಂ ಹರಿಂ ಲಬ್ಧ್ವಾ ಪ್ರಾಪ್ತಾ ತ್ವಂ ನಿರ್ವೃತಿಂ ಪುರಾ |
ತಾಮೇವ ನಿರ್ವೃತಿಂ ದೇವಿ ಸುಪುತ್ರೇ ದರ್ಶಯಸ್ವ ಮೇ ||

ಹೀಗೆ ದೇವಕಿಯನ್ನು, ಆಕೆಯ ಬಳಿ ಪುಟ್ಟಕೃಷ್ಣನ ಪಾದವನ್ನೊತ್ತುತ್ತಿರುವ ಲಕ್ಷ್ಮಿಯನ್ನೂ ಪೂಜಿಸಿ, ನೈವೇದ್ಯ-ಮಂಗಳಾರತಿಗಳನ್ನು ಮಾಡಬೇಕು .

ಅರ್ಘ್ಯಪ್ರದಾನ :
ಇದೀಗ ಎಲ್ಲರಿಗೂ ಅರ್ಘ್ಯಕೊಡಲಾಗುವಂತೆ ಒಂದು ಶ್ರೀಕೃಷ್ಣಪ್ರತಿಮೆ ಹಾಗೂ ಶಾಲಗ್ರಾಮವನ್ನು ತಟ್ಟೆಯಲ್ಲಿ ಪ್ರತ್ಯೇಕವಾಗಿ ಇಟ್ಟುಕೊಂಡು ಕೈಯಲ್ಲಿ ಬಿಲ್ವಪತ್ರ ಹೂವುಗಳನ್ನು ಹಿಡಿದು ಹೀಗೆ ಪ್ರಾರ್ಥಿಸಬೇಕು :

ಕೃಷ್ಣಂ ಚ ಬಲಭದ್ರಂ ಚ ವಸುದೇವಂ ಚ ದೇವಕೀಮ್ |
ಯಶೋದಾಂ ನಂದಗೋಪಂ ಚ ಸುಭದ್ರಾಂ ತತ್ರ ಪೂಜಯೇತ್ ||

ಕೃಷ್ಣ-ಬಲಭದ್ರಾದಿಗಳನ್ನು ಚಿಂತಿಸಿ ಬಿಲ್ವಪತ್ರೆಯನ್ನು ಅರ್ಪಿಸಿ; ಶಂಖದಲ್ಲಿ ನೀರು ಹಿಡಿದುಕೊಂಡು –
ಜಾತಃ ಕಂಸವಧಾರ್ಥಾಯ ಭೂಭಾರಹರಣಾಯ ಚ |
ಕೌರವಾಣಾಂ ವಿನಾಶಾಯ ದೈತ್ಯಾನಾಂ ನಿಧನಾಯ ಚ ||

ಪಾಂಡವಾನಾಂ ಹಿತಾರ್ಥಾಯ ಧರ್ಮಸಂಸ್ಥಾಪನಾಯ ಚ |
ಗೃಹಾಣಾರ್ಘ್ಯಂ ಮಯಾ ದತ್ತಂ ದೇವಕ್ಯಾ ಸಹಿತೋ ಹರೇ ||

ದೇವಕೀಸಹಿತಾಯ ಶ್ರೀಕೃಷ್ಣಾಯ ಇದಮರ್ಘ್ಯಮಿದಮರ್ಘ್ಯಮಿದಮರ್ಘ್ಯಮ್’ ಎಂದು ಶ್ರೀಕೃಷ್ಣಪ್ರತಿಮೆಯ ಮುಂಭಾಗದಲ್ಲಿ ತಟ್ಟೆಗೆ ಮೂರು ಬಾರಿ ಬೊಗಸೆಯಲ್ಲಿ ಹಿಡಿದ ಶಂಖದ ನೀರನ್ನು ಬಿಡಬೇಕು.

ಅನೇನ ಅರ್ಘ್ಯಪ್ರದಾನೇನ ಮಧ್ವಾಂತರ್ಗತಗೋಪಾಲಕೃಷ್ಣಃ ಪ್ರೀಯತಾಮ್ ||

ಹೀಗೆ ಕೃಷ್ಣನಿಗೆ ಮೂರು ಅರ್ಘ್ಯವನ್ನಿತ್ತು ಪುನಃ ‘ಕೃಷ್ಣಂ ಚ ಬಲಭದ್ರಂ ಚ….’ ಎಂದು ಬಿಲ್ವಪತ್ರೆಯನ್ನು ಹಾಕಬೇಕು.
ನಂತರ ತುಳಸೀಕಟ್ಟೆಯ ಬುಡದಲ್ಲಿ ಚಂದ್ರನಿಗೆ ಅರ್ಘ್ಯಪ್ರದಾನ ಮಾಡಬೇಕು.
ಕೈಯಲ್ಲಿ ಬಿಲ್ವಪತ್ರೆಯನ್ನು ಹಿಡಿದು;
ಶಶಿನೇ ಚಂದ್ರದೇವಾಯ ಸೋಮದೇವಾಯ ಚೇಂದವೇ |
ಶೀತದೀಧಿತಿಬಿಂಬಾಯ ತಾರಕಾಪತಯೇ ನಮಃ ||

ಎಂದು ತುಳಸೀಬುಡದಲ್ಲಿ ಚಂದ್ರನಿಗೆ ಬಿಲ್ವಪತ್ರೆಯನ್ನು ಅರ್ಪಿಸಿ;
ಕ್ಷೀರೋದಾರ್ಣವಸಂಭೂತ ಅತ್ರಿನೇತ್ರಸಮುದ್ಭವ |
ಗೃಹಾಣಾರ್ಘ್ಯಂ ಮಯಾ ದತ್ತಂ ರೋಹಿಣ್ಯಾಸಹಿತಃ ಶಶಿನ್ ||

ರೋಹಿಣೀಸಹಿತಾಯ ಚಂದ್ರಮಸೇ ಇದಮರ್ಘ್ಯಮಿದಮರ್ಘ್ಯಮಿದಮರ್ಘ್ಯಮ್’ ಹೀಗೆ ಶಂಖದಲ್ಲಿ ತುಂಬಿದ ಗೋಕ್ಷೀರದಿಂದ ಅರ್ಘ್ಯವನ್ನು ಕೊಟ್ಟು ಪುನಃ ‘ಶಶಿನೇ ಚಂದ್ರದೇವಾಯ….’ ಎಂದು ಬಿಲ್ವಪತ್ರೆಯನ್ನು ಅರ್ಪಿಸಿ ಕೃಷ್ಣಾರ್ಪಣ ಬಿಡಬೇಕು.
