The main Rajagopuram work was started by Achyutaraya of Vijayanagar Empire. However, the work was never completed after his death. The work was taken up in the modern times by Sri Vedanta Desika Yatheendra Mahadesikan, the 44th Jeeyar () of Sri Ahobilam Mutt in 1979 and was completed in the year 1987. This is a 73 m high tower with 13 tiers. Size of the tower is believed to be at 166ft by 97 ft. Each Kalasham on the Rajagopuram is made of copper weighing about 135 kg.
