Kushavarta, a pond in this temple is believed to be the origin for River Godavari. Sage Gautama used “darbha” (Kusha grass) to round up Ganga and hence the name. Simhastha Kumbhamela that takes place every once in 12 years is a ritual followed by millions of devotees. Brahma, Vishnu and Maheshwar are represented by three separate lingams here. The temple is situated between three hills namely Brahmagiri, Nilagiri and Kalagiri.

Godavari River is the second largest river in India and originates from Trayambakeshwar. Maharshi Gautam prayed to Lord Shiva and brought Ganga to absolve himself of sins. Sage Gautama was tricked by a group of Brahmins who created a mythical cow. This mythical cow strayed into Sage Gautama’s fields. When Gautama Rishi tried to shoo her away, she died. As Ganga removed the sins of killing the cow (Gau Hatya), the river came to be called Godavari.

About Pitru Paksha and Mahalaya Amavaasya

The waning phase of the Moon during Hindu Bhadrapada (Telugu/Kannada lunar) month, which falls around September, is called Mahalaya Paksha or Pitru Paksha. Mahalaya Amavaasya is also known as Sarva Pitru Amavasya or Sarva Pitra Amavasya or simply Pitru Amavasya.

A Paksha is of 15 days. Pitru Paksh is extremely important for the Hindu orthodox, as a fortnight of revering their ancestors and clearing their Karmic debts. Hindus perform Shraddha (Thithi) during this fortnight. Pitru Paksh/Mahalaya Paksh rituals are to be compulsorily done, as per the right procedures, by every Dharmik Hindu, annually.

Pitru Paksha Shraddha Puja based on Thithi

The general practice is to perform Shraddha based on the Thithi of the day as, Pratipat Shraddh for those who departed on Pratipat.

Shraddh Puja for those departed on each Thithi continues throughout the entire fortnight.

Kumara Panchami is a day reserved for those who departed unmarried apart from the others. A day is dedicated to women who died as Sumangalis. For these, Shraddh is performed on the ninth day of Pitru Paksha. This is known as Avidhava Navami.

Shraddh pujas performed on 13th day (Trayodashi) are meant for children who died. Shraddha performed for those who suffered unnatural death on 14th lunar day is known as Ghata Chaturdashi.

Mahalaya Sarva-Pitru-Tarpans start with parents and extends to all relatives who have passed away. This is when all the ancestors, relatives and even friends are remembered and offered Shraddha Pooja.

Karna’s legend of performing Shraddh

It is interesting to learn that the practice of Pitru Paksha got started by Karna of Maha Bharata. Karna reaches Svarga (the heaven) and is happy. When hungry, he asks the gods for food. He is offered jewellery and gold. When he asks them why this he is not given food, they tell him he did not perform any Shraddh and offer food to his ancestors. Karna says he was not aware who his ancestors were. Karna requests for some time grace to go back to earth and perform Shraddha, he is given fifteen days of grace period. This is the time period that coincides with Pitru Paksha ending in Mahalaya Amavasya. Many more references can be studied in the scriptures about the importance of Pitrupaksh.

In the Shradh performed year on year, the oblations are offered to gods Vasu, Rudra and Aditya through whom a portion goes to the ancestors of three generations; be it father(Pitru)-grandfather(Pitamah)-great grandfather(Prapitamah) or mother(Matru)-mother’s mother in law (Matahamahi)-mother in law’s mother in law (Prapitamahi).

In the Pitrupaksh, all other deceased relatives are also remembered and offered oblations. Even deceased friends are commemorated and offered Tharpanam. Even people who are not part of Gotram can offer oblations to their relatives, state the scriptures.

In certain cases, the actual dates of demise of their forefathers may not be known to the kartha. In such circumstances, rituals may be offered during the Pitru Paksha, thereby appeasing their souls and obtaining blessings.

I have booked online mahalaya prathipad sraddha of my father to be performed on 21st September 2021 at gokarna kshetra
by team of pandits in my absence there at physically, and shared me about 10 to 11 video clips of the event.
Totally satisfied with the performance and it is more worth as of my impartial opinion.
