Rameswaram is a small island and major Teertha Kshetra in the Gulf of Mannar. It is connected to the mainland of Southern India by Pamban Bridge. Rameswaram is famous for the Jyotirlinga known as “Ramanathaswamy” or “Rameshwara”, the lord of Rama. Rama built a bridge from here across the sea to Swarnalanka to rescue his consort Sita from demon king Ravan. Goddess Parvati installed here is called Parvatavardhini. Gandhamadana Parvat in the island of Rameswaram is believed to be a portion of the medicinal mountain, Hanuman carried to Lanka to treat Lakshmana who had fainted during the battle.
Rameswaram is also a well-known Mukti Sthala for undertaking ancestral ceremony like Sharddh, Masik Shraddhas, Tarpanam, Mahalaya Amavasya Tarpanams and many others.
There are as many as 64 Teerthas, considered very holy and devotees take Punyasnana in this Teertha Kshetra. Sacred Shivalingam prepared by Sita, installed and anointed by Rama can be seen here. Also installed here is the Shivalingam brought by Hanuman goes by the name Vishwalingam. As commanded by Rama, the Vishwalingam is given the first Puja.
