Thirunageswaram Sri Kshetra in Tanjore is about 6km from Kumbakonam. This place is known as one among the Navagraha Sthalams and located on the banks of river Kaveri. Sri Naganatha Swamy temple is dedicated to Lord Shiva. An important feature of Naganatha Swami temple is that of Rahu. In this temple belonging to 10th Century CE, a shrine dedicated to Lord Rahu has been consecrated. This is the only place, where Lord Rahu has been shown to be with his consorts. Sri Kshetra of Naganatha Swamy finds mention in Puranas and the region was known as Champakaranya.
A hundred pillar Mantap here is a cynosure to the eyes. Nandi can be seen in a beautifully carved Mantap here. Other deities include Sri Vinayaka (Pillaiyar) and goddess Parvati.
It is considered very auspicious to offer obeisance to Lord Rahu here. Many Pujas, Pariharas and Homas related to Rahu graha (planet Rahu) are performed in this Thirunageswaram Sri Kshetra.
