Aghoramurthy of Shiva
This kshetra has a unique sannidhi for Aghora Murthy, the fierce form of Lord Shiva.
Lord Shiva in the form of Aghoramurthy is believed to have slain Maruthasuran here under a tree.
The main Nandi idol of the temple has nine holes on its body. Nandi, the vehicle of Lord Shiva, tried to prevent Asura Soorapadman, who had planned an attack on Shiva. Soorapadman injured Nandi. This injury is represented by the nine holes in the idol. Lord Shiva got extremely furious knowing that his loyal mount Nandi was injured and assumed a fearsome Aghora Murthy form to destroy the demon.
This Kshetra is not very far from the world-famous ancient city of Poompuhar in Nagapattinam district. From the stone inscriptions found inside this temple, it is seen that the chola kings Aditya Chola and Rajaraja Chola made huge contributions to this region.
