Dattatreya Avatar Importance

The Avatar of Dattatreya is highly revered in Andhra-Telangana, Karnataka, Maharashtra and Tamil Nadu states. Lord Dattatreya is the incarnation of the Hindu Divine Trinity of Brahma, Vishnu and Shiva in one form. The seventh Adhyay (Chapter) of the eleventh Skandha (Branch) in Srimad Bhagavatam mentions the importance of Dattatreya Avatar and the discussions that take place between Dattatreya and Yaduraja.

Significance of Dattatreya Jayanti

The significance of Dattatreya Jayanti lies in its celebration of divine presence of Lord Dattatreya and his teachings that emphasize the unity of all beings, the importance of self-realization, and the path to spiritual liberation.

On Dattatreya Jayanti, devotees wake up early and take a ritual bath, symbolizing the purification of the body and mind. They then visit temples and perform special pujas (worship rituals) to seek the blessings of Lord Dattatreya. Offerings of flowers, incense, lamps, and food are made to the deity. Some people also fast on this day as a mark of devotion.

Dattatreya Homam is performed propitiating Lord Dattatreya, the one with three heads, six hands, and four dogs, standing in front of the divine cow and Kapavriksha (wish-fulfilling tree).
