Dakshinamurti literally means, One who is facing South (South is considered the direction of Lord of Death or Ajnana). He sits cross legged in Chinn Mudra with the right leg crushing a demon (one’s ego). His right hand is in Jnana Mudra which represents Tat-tvam-Asi, the relation between the individual and the Absolute, thereby indicating that the Jeeva and Brahman are one. Dakshinamurthy is normally depicted as, seated under a Banyan tree with Rishis seated below.
