Mahalaya Pitru paksha Shradh Pujas in Teertha Kshetras are typically performed on the banks of a river, tank or sea side on Mahalaya Amavasya day or specifically on the day of death of the ancestors.
Matru Gaya in Sidhpur, Gujarat has a rich past. The importance of Matru Gaya has been mentioned in Rigveda. The region was famous for the lake Bindu Sarovar. It is one of the five important lakes of ancient India. Also, Sage Kapilacharya brought out the importance of Sankhyayog and through this, he was able to give Moksha (salvation) to his mother Devahuti. Hence, it is considered very auspicious to offer ‘Pinddaan’ to deceased mothers by their sons at Matru Gaya.
