Holi Phalgun Poornima Importance
In India, the colourful festival of Holi is celebrated on the full moon day of Phalgunamaas. There are legends to explain why Holi is celebrated. One legend connects the celebration of Holi to Holika, a sister of the demon king Hiranyakashipu. She promises to kill Prahlada in a fire with the help of a special cloak that would protect the wearer.
Holi | Holika | Hiranyakashipu
The celebration of Holi is connected to Holika, a sister of the demon king Hiranyakashipu. She promises to kill Prahlada in a fire with the help of a special cloak that would protect the wearer. Holika makes the boy Prahlad to sit in her lap in the middle of a pyre. However, when the fire starts engulfing everything, the cloak protecting Holika flies away from her and protects Prahlad.
Kaamadahan & Holi
Kaamadahan is another legend that is connected with burning a bonfire.
When Lord Shiva’s consort Sati committed herself to fire due to disgrace shown by her father Daksha to Shiva, Lord Shiva became extremely sad. He renounced his worldly duties and went into deep meditation. Meanwhile, the daughter of the mountains, Parvati, started meditating to have Shiva as her husband. Since Shiva was least interested in worldly affairs, complications arose in matters of the world, which made all the gods concerned and afraid.
The gods then sought the help of Lord Kaamadeva to bring Shiva back to his original self. Kaamadeva shot his love arrow on Shiva while he was in meditation. This made Shiva extremely angry and he opened his third eye – reducing Kaamadeva to ashes. However, Kaamadeva arrow had the desired effect and Lord Shiva married Parvati.
A short while after this, Kaamadeva’s wife, Rati pleaded Lord Shiva and said this was all the plan of the gods and asked him to kindly revive Kaamadeva and Lord Shiva gladly agreed to do so.
This occasion is commemorated through the Kamadahan and splashing of colors on one another as a symbol of love and compassion.
