Vaastu Shanti Homam is peformed to create harmony between Pancha-Bhutas (or the Five Elements) of nature and the eight cardinal directions, so that a perfect alignment is achieved.

What is Vastu Shastra?

Vastu Shastra or Vaastu is about understanding the usefulness, life and harmony that can be obtained from a piece of land, dwelling, workplace or any such investment. It is the methodology that interprets and understands the five elements of nature known as ‘Pancha Bhuta’ (Prithwee – Earth, Vayu – Air, AapaH – Water, Akash – Space, and Agni – Fire) in a dwelling and creates a balance between man and nature.

Vaastu Purusha & His Importance

According to Puranas like Matsya Purana, Kurma Purana and other sacred scriptures, birth of Vaastu Purusha is said to have happened through the sweat of Lord Shiva when he was in combat with a demon king called Andhakasur. Once born he was ever hungry and started a penance seeking a solution to his hunger. When Lord Shiva appeared before this formless figure, he sought Shiva’s grant to address his hunger. He started to devour everything in sight. All the Gods and Goddess pinned him to the ground in order to prevent him from devouring everything. He sought a boon to address his hunger. Then, Lord Brahma stated that in Krityug, Treta Yug and Dwapar Yug, he would be getting his share from offerings made to Gods. However, in Kali Yug, he can consume all in those houses that do not make an offerings to Gods.
