Varahi In Scriptures
Varahi is one of the Saivite Shakti Devatas with the group of goddesses known as Saptamaatas or Saptamaatrikas. They are Brahmi, Maheshwari, Kaumari, Vaishnavi, Varahi, Mahendri and Chamundi. She is believed to have been created from the Varahavatar of Lord Vishnu. She is described to have eight arms, head of a boar with three eyes. Varahi is also called Dandini Devi (Commander of the forces of the Mother-Goddesses, symbolizing the might of Sri Vidya). Varahi has been described in the Matsya Purana and Agamas like the Purva-karan Agama and the Rupamandana. Varahi (the boar faced goddess) helps ward off enemy problems, negative vibes and will be a protective shield for the devotee.
Varahi Tantra mentions that Varahi has five forms of Varahi: Svapna Varahi, Chanda Varahi, Mahi Varahi (Bhairavi), Kruccha Varahi and Matsya Varahi. She destroys evil forces that obstructs the devotees’ progress, paralyses the enemies, and led the devotees ultimately to Sri Vidyas. She is also called Panchami. Markendeya Purana praises Varahi as a granter of boons. Devi Bhagavata Purana says Varahi is created by the Supreme Mother. Varahi Amman in boar form fights demons with her tusks while seated on a Preta (corpse or a dead body).
