Lord Shiva created him from a strand of his hair in anger to destroy Daksha Yaag when, Sati sacrificed herself in the Homa Kunda. Virabhadra executed Daksha Prajapati and destroyed the Yajjna. Later, Gods brought Daksha to life attaching a Goat’s head. There are many temples dedicated to Virabhadra Swamy across India.

Virabhadra Jayanti is celebrated on the first Tuesday of Bhadrapadmaas every year. There are references made to the deity Virabhadra by the renowned traveller Marc Polo.

There are 21 wells inside the tank in the shape of small spring wells. Beginning the eastern side of the tank, there are eight wells in the name of celestial deities. In between the Vayu and Kubera wells, the ninth well is located called Brahma Theertham. Commencing from the north of Vayu Theertham, there are nine wells indicating the holy rivers of India, namely the Ganges, Yamuna, Godavari, Narmada, Saraswathi, Kaveri, Tungabhadra, Krishna and Sarayu.
