Around 2000 years older temple was originally built by the Budha hermits.The Temple has its scenic location in alleppey district, sorrounded by Vembanad lake,the largest lake in kerala.This area earlier called 'Kothesham', was formerly the western boundary of the Pandalam Kingdom. The lake sorrounding the place was earlier called 'Manikandan Kayal'. The Pandalam king governed this place by appointing his subordinate king exclusively for 'Kothesham'.When the ancient 'Musiris'got drowned in a malignant flood,the place became the capital of the Chera Kingdom-hence the name Cherthala.The place became an independent state called 'Karappuram'.The state was defeated in the war held at Ambalappuzha in the 1500's and the places south of Kochi was united to form a state called Venad Later the area was rendered to Venad which was ruled by 'KothaVarma' king. His son 'Keralavarman' resurrected the Kotheswaram Temple. Places north of Cherthala was gifted to Kochi to counter the Portugese attack.Thus formed two devaswoms and kotheswaram temple came under the Travancore Devaswom. ആലപ്പുഴ ജില്ലയില്‍ ചേര്‍ത്തല താലൂക്കില്‍ വേമ്പനാട്ട് കായലിനാല്‍ ചുറ്റപ്പെട്ടു കിടക്കുന്ന പ്രദേശമാണിത്. കൊച്ചിക്ക്‌ തെക്കുള്ള നാട്ടുരാജ്യങ്ങള്‍ ഒന്നാക്കി വേണാട് എന്ന രാജ്യം സ്ഥാപിക്കുന്നതുവരെ പന്തളം രാജ്യത്തിന്‍റെ പടിഞ്ഞാറെ അതിരായിരുന്നു ‘കോദേശം’ എന്ന ഈ പ്രദേശം. ഈ ദ്വീപിനെ ചുറ്റിക്കിടക്കുന്ന വേമ്പനാട്ട് കായലിന്‍റെ പഴയ പേര് മണി കണ്ഠന്‍ കായല്‍ എന്നാണ്. പന്തളം രാജാവ് ഈ പ്രദേശത്തിന് മാത്രമായി ഒരു നാട്ടു രാജാവിനെ നിയമിച്ച് ഭരണം നടത്തിയിരുന്നു. അന്ന് കൊടുങ്ങല്ലൂരിന് മഹോദയപുരം എന്ന പ്രശസ്തനാമമായിരുന്നു. പൊന്നാനി മുതല്‍ തിരുവല്ല വരെയുള്ള ചേരരാജ്യത്താ യിരുന്നു ഈ നാട്. പെരിയാറില്‍ ഉണ്ടായ ജലപ്രളയത്തില്‍ ‘മുസിരിസ്’ മുങ്ങിത്താണപ്പോള്‍ ചേരരാജ്യത്തിന്‍റെ തലസ്ഥാനമായി ഈ കരപ്പുറം. ചേര്‍ത്തല എന്നത് ചേരരാജ്യത്തിന്‍റെ തലസ്ഥാനം എന്നാണ്. പില്‍ക്കാലത്ത് ഈ പ്രദേശം ഉള്‍പ്പെടെ പന്തളത്ത് രാജ്യം വേണാടിന് അടിയറവക്കപ്പെട്ടു. അന്ന് വേണാട് ഭരിച്ചിരുന്ന കോതവര്‍മ്മ രാജാവിന്‍റെ പുത്രന്‍ കേരള വര്‍മ്മ പുനര്‍ നിര്‍മ്മിച്ചതാണ് കോതേശ്വരം ക്ഷേത്രം. 2000 വര്‍ഷത്തിനുമേല്‍ പഴക്കമുള്ള ഈ ക്ഷേത്രം ബുദ്ധസന്യാസിമാരാല്‍ സ്ഥാപിക്കപ്പെട്ടതാണ്. പിന്നീട് ഈ പ്രദേശം കരപ്പുറം എന്ന സ്വതന്ത്ര രാജ്യമായി മാറി. 1500 ല്‍ അമ്പലപ്പുഴയില്‍ വച്ച് നടന്ന യുദ്ധത്തില്‍ കരപ്പുറം പരാജയപ്പെടുകയും കൊച്ചിക്ക് തെക്കുള്ള പ്രദേശങ്ങള്‍ വേണാടില്‍ ലയിക്കുക യും ചെയ്തു. പോര്‍ച്ചുഗീസ് ആക്രമണത്തെ തോല്‍പ്പിക്കുന്നതിന് ചേര്‍ത്തലയ്ക്ക് വടക്കുള്ള പ്രദേശങ്ങള്‍ കൊച്ചി രാജാവിന് ഇഷ്ടദാനം നല്‍കി. അതിന്‍ പ്രകാരം രണ്ട് ദേവസ്വം ഉണ്ടാവുകയും കോതേശ്വരം ക്ഷേത്രം തിരുവിതാംകൂര്‍ ദേവസ്വത്തിനൊപ്പം ആവുകയും ചെയ്തു.
