The parents of Sri Jagathguru Sankaracharya, enough fortunate Aryamba and Sivaguru were visiting this pilgrim centre permanently. Though it was late, these parents got a son Sankaracharya, a luminary in Vedanta and Advaitha. A thrilling legend exists around the three and the temple. Sivaguru, father of Sankara use to visit and worship the Goddess every day, at any circumstances. But one day, he somehow missed it. Mother Aryamba Devi sent infant Sankara to the temple with milk. However, before he could reach the temple, it got closed and Sankara could not complete his part. The small boy Sankara began to cry in the temple yard. A luminous divine light began to flow from the Sanctorum and by this time the pot containing milk which Sankara was holding became empty. The boy was happy in this incident, but he became sad as well since there was no milk to take home as Prasadam. He began to mourn again. Here, Devi appeared and she herself poured milk to make the pot again full. This milk is believed to be Jnanatheertham and Sankara drinking this holy Prasadam made him mega intelligent and later the Jagadguru. Even today this belief exists as it is possible to see many invoking Devi Karthyayani by offering Palpayasam, her main offering, and enjoying Devi Prasadam, later becoming scholars of high standards. ജഗദ്ഗുരു ശ്രീശങ്കരന്‍റെ മാതാപിതാക്കന്മാരായിരുന്ന ആര്യാംബയും ശിവഗുരുവും ഈ ക്ഷേത്രത്തിൽ പതിവായി ദർശനം നടത്തിയിരുന്നതായും തൽഫലമായാണ് വൈകിയാണെങ്കിലും അവർക്കു ജഗദ്ഗുരു മകനായി പിറന്നതെന്നുമാണ് വിശ്വാസം. ക്ഷേത്രത്തെയും അവർ മൂന്നുപേരെയും ചുറ്റിപ്പറ്റി ഏറെ കൗതുകകരമായൊരൈതീഹ്യം നിലവിലുണ്ട്. ശ്രീശങ്കര പിതാവായിരുന്ന ശിവഗുരു, പതിവായി ക്ഷേത്രദർശനം നടത്തുകയും വഴിപാടുകളർപ്പിക്കുകയും ചെയ്തുപോന്നിരുന്നു. ഒരുദിവസം അദ്ദേഹത്തിനതിനു സാധിക്കാതെ വന്നപ്പോൾ ആര്യാംബാ അന്തർജ്ജനം കുഞ്ഞു ശങ്കരനെ പാൽ നൽകാനായി പറഞ്ഞയച്ചു.. ശങ്കരൻ ക്ഷേത്രത്തിലെത്തിയപ്പോഴേക്കും നടയടച്ചിരുന്നതിനാൽ പാൽ സമർപ്പിക്കുവാൻ സാധിച്ചില്ല. ഇതോടെ കുഞ്ഞു ശങ്കരൻ ക്ഷേത്ര മുറ്റത്തു നിന്നും കരയുവാനാരംഭിച്ചു. തത്സമയം ശ്രീകോവിനുള്ളിൽ നിന്നും ഒരു ദിവ്യ പ്രകാശധാരയുണ്ടാവുകയും ശങ്കരന്‍റെ കൈയ്യിലിരുന്ന പാൽപ്പാത്രം ശൂന്യമാകുകയും ചെയ്തു. ദേവി തന്‍റെ പ്രസാദം സ്വീകരിച്ചതു മൂലം ശങ്കരൻ സന്തുഷ്ടനായെങ്കിലും പ്രസാദമായി തിരിച്ചു കൊണ്ടുപോകുവാൻ തന്‍റെ കയ്യിൽ പാൽ ബാക്കിയില്ലെന്നോർത്തു വീണ്ടും കരയുവാനാരംഭിച്ചു. ഈ സമയത്ത് ദേവി പ്രത്യക്ഷപ്പെടുകയും ശങ്കരാചാര്യന്‍റെ പാൽപ്പാത്രം വീണ്ടും നിറയുകയും ചെയ്തുവത്രേ.. ദേവി തന്‍റെ തൃക്കൈയ്യാലോഴിച്ചു കൊടുത്ത ഈ ജ്ഞാനാമൃതപാനത്തിലൂടെയാണ് ശങ്കരാചാര്യന്‍ അസാമാന്യ ബുദ്ധിശാലിയായിമാറിയതും ജഗദ്ഗുരുപദത്തിലേക്കുയർന്നതുമെന്നുമാണ് വിശ്വാസം. ദേവികാർത്ത്യായനിയെ ഭജിച്ച്, ദേവിയുടെ പ്രസാദമായി പാൽപ്പായസം സേവിച്ച്, ദേവീ കടാക്ഷത്തിലൂടെ അറിവിന്‍റെ അമൃതധാരാവർഷത്തിനു പാത്രീഭൂതരായി തീർന്ന നിരവധി പേരെ ഇന്നും കാണുവാൻ സാധിക്കും.
