There is an interesting legend related to the local deity, Iggutappa. It is believed that in the distant past, somewhere in the State of Kerala, seven children, comprising six boys and a girl, were born from a golden conch due to celestial powers of the Almighty. These seven due to divine power, came to be popularly called as 'Evvamakka Devaru', meaning Children of God. This has been widely mentioned in the Kodava folklore. The eldest of the seven children became famous as Kaimratappa, second one as Thiruchambarappa, third as Bendru Kolappa, fourth as Iggutappa, fifth as Palurappa, sixth as Thirunelli Pemmayya and their sister was named Thangamma. Later, they became famous as Pannangaala Thamme. ಪುರಾತನ ಕಾಲದಲ್ಲಿ ಭಗವಂತನ ದಿವ್ಯ ಮಾಯಾ ಪ್ರಭಾವದಿಂದ ಕೇರಳ ರಾಜ್ಯದಲ್ಲಿ ಒಂದೆಡೆ ಸುವರ್ಣ ಶಂಖವೊಂದರಿಂದ ಆರು ಮಂದಿ ಗಂಡು ಮಕ್ಕಳು ಒಬ್ಬಳು ಹೆಣ್ಣು ಮಗಳು ಜನ್ಮ ತಳೆದರು. ಇವರು ಆಯೋನಿಜರು. ದೈವೀಕವಾದ ಮಾಯಾಶಕ್ತಿಯಿಂದ ಮನುಷ್ಯರೂಪದಲ್ಲಿ ಜನ್ಮ ತಳೆದ ಈ ಏಳು ಮಂದಿ ‘ಎವ್ವಮಕ್ಕದೇವರು’ ಅಂದರೆ ದೇವರ ಮಕ್ಕಳು ಎಂದು ಕೊಡವರು ನಂಬಿರುವರೆಂದು ಜಾನಪದ ಸಾಹಿತ್ಯ ರಚನೆಗಳಿಂದ ತಿಳಿದು ಬರುತ್ತದೆ. ಹಿರಿಯವನು ಕಾಂಞರಾಟಪ್ಪ ಎಂದು ಪ್ರಸಿದ್ಧನಾದನು. ಎರಡನೆಯವನು ತಿರುಚಂಬರಪ್ಪ ಎಂದೂ, ಮೂರನೆಯವನು ಬೇಂದ್ರು ಕೋಲಪ್ಪ ಎಂದೂ, ನಾಲ್ಕನೆಯವನು ಇಗ್ಗುತಪ್ಪ ಎಂದೂ, ಐದನೆಯವನು ಪಾಲೂರಪ್ಪ ಎಂದೂ, ಆರನೆಯವನು ತಿರುನೆಲ್ಲಿ ಪೆಮ್ಮಯ್ಯ ಎಂದೂ ಪ್ರಸಿದ್ಧರಾದರು. ಇವರ ತಂಗಿ ತಂಗಮ್ಮನೆಂದು ಅಭಿದಾನ ತಳೆದು ಕೊನೆಗೆ ಪನ್ನಂಗಾಲ ತಮ್ಮೆ ಎಂದು ಪ್ರಖ್ಯಾತಳಾದಳು.

In 1810, Lingarajendra Urs was the king of Coorg. One day, when he had gone for hunting, he couldn't find any prey. The frustrated King blamed his Minister for suggesting that place for hunting. Disturbed by the criticism of the king, the Minister offered prayers to Sri Iggutappa and suddenly, a few animals appeared in front of the king. Then, Lingarajendra Urs killed 34 elephants, eight tigers and lion cubs. The minister donated a silver elephant in gratitude. ಶ್ರೀ ಇಗ್ಗುತಪ್ಪ ದೇವಸ್ಥಾನವು ಕುತೂಹಲಕಾರ ಹಾಗೂ ವಿಸ್ತೃತವಾದ ಐತಿಹಾಸಿಕ ಹಿನ್ನಲೆ ಹೊಂದಿದೆ. ಕ್ರಿ.ಶ.1810ರಲ್ಲಿ ಲಿಂಗರಾಜೇಂದ್ರನೆಂಬ ಅರಸನು ಕೊಡಗನ್ನು ಆಳುತ್ತಿದ್ದನು. ಒಂದು ದಿನ ತನ್ನ ಸೈನಿಕರೊಂದಿಗೆ ಬೇಟೆಗೆ ಹೋದಾಗ ಅಂದು ಬೇಟೆಯು ಸಿಗಲಿಲ್ಲ. ಆಗ ರಾಜನು ಅಶಾಂತಿಗೊಂಡು ಇಲ್ಲಿಗೆ ಬರಲು ಸಲಹೆ ನೀಡಿದ ಮಂತ್ರಿಗೆ ಶಿಕ್ಷೆ ನೀಡಲು ಮುಂದಾದನು. ಆಗ ಮಂತ್ರಿಯು ಇಗ್ಗುತಪ್ಪನನ್ನು ಪ್ರಾರ್ಥಿಸಲಾಗಿ ಪ್ರಾಣಿಗಳು ಕಂಡವು. ಆಗ ಲಿಂಗರಾಜೇಂದ್ರನು 34 ಆನೆಗಳನ್ನು, 8 ಹುಲಿಗಳನ್ನು ಮತ್ತು ಸಿಂಹದ ಮರಿಗಳನ್ನು ಕೊಂದನು. ಆಗ ಮಂತ್ರಿಯು ಒಂದು ಬೆಳ್ಳಿಯ ಆನೆಯನ್ನು ಉಡುಗೊರೆಯಾಗಿ ನೀಡಿದನು.
