Centuries of back, a pious scholar Brahmin, in between his long travels reached at Ernakulam formerly Rishinagakkulam. The idols of Devi-Devathas whom all he was carrying for puja together with every time where all placed on the ground. He began his puja. At the very time of the completion of puja, it was noticed, the idol of Devi was affirmed on the ground. Following a devaprashna (astrological findings), the temple was built up and the idol of Devi was installed there. Later another temple was constructed at a place known to be Thottathinkal and the idol of Deva was consecrated there. This temple is now known to be Thottatthil Sree Dharmashastha Temple. The administrators of this Temple were from the very beginning the Cheranalloor Karthas, and still those continues to be. നൂറ്റാണ്ടുകൾക്ക് മുമ്പ് ദിവ്യജ്ഞനായ ഒരു ബ്രാഹ്മണൻ ദേശാടനത്തിനിടയിൽ ഇന്ന്‍ എറണാകുളം എന്ന്‍ പേരുള്ള അന്നത്തെ ഋഷിനാഗകുളത്ത് എത്തുകയുണ്ടായി. അവിടെ പരമ്പനാർകുളങ്ങര (ഇന്നത്തെ പരമാരക്ഷേത്രമിരിക്കുന്ന സ്ഥലം) എന്ന സ്ഥലത്ത് തന്റെ ഉപാസനാമൂർത്തികളായ ദേവീദേവന്മാരുടെ ബിംബങ്ങൾ വച്ചു അദ്ദേഹം പൂജ ചെയ്തു. പൂജ കഴിഞ്ഞതും ദേവീബിംബം അവിടെ ഉറച്ചു പോയി! തുടർന്ന് ദേവപ്രശ്നവിധികൾ നടത്തി ഒരു ദേവീക്ഷേത്രം പണിയുകയും ബിംബം അവിടെ പ്രതിഷ്ഠിക്കുകയും ചെയ്തു. ക്ഷേത്രോത്ഭവവുമായി ബന്ധപ്പെട്ട ചരിത്രം അവിടെ തുടങ്ങുന്നു. ദേശാടനപ്രിയനായിരുന്ന ആ ബ്രാഹ്മണശ്രേഷ്ഠൻ പൂജിച്ച ദേവവിഗ്രഹം തോട്ടത്തിങ്കൽ എന്ന സ്ഥലത്ത് മറ്റൊരു ക്ഷേത്രം നിർമ്മിച്ച് അങ്ങോട്ടേയ്ക്കു മാറ്റി പ്രതിഷ്ഠിച്ചു. അതാണ് ഇന്ന്‍ എറണാകുളത്തെ എസ്.ആർ.എം. റോഡിൽ കാണുന്ന തോട്ടത്തിൽ ശ്രീധർമ്മശാസ്താ ക്ഷേത്രം. കൊച്ചി പ്രവിശ്യയിലെ അക്കാലത്തെ ഭരണകർത്താക്കൻമാരായിരുന്ന ചേരാനല്ലൂർ കർത്താക്കന്മാരാണ് അന്ന്‍ മുതല്‍ ക്ഷേത്രഭരണാധികാരികള്‍.
