Hailed as one of the greatest monuments of medieval art in India, Sri Channakeshava temple at Belur was built by a Hoysala king to commemorate his victory over the Cholas in the battle of Talkad. It is further understood that the construction of this temple began in about 1117 A.D. and it took about 103 years to complete the same. The principal structure of the temple has been erected on a star-shaped platform. The skills of sculptors in fashioning numerous elephants, floral motifs, human figures and an array of gods and goddesses are amazing. This temple has been described as a jewel box of Hoysala architectural splendour. The main temple is surrounded by a shrine for Kappe Chennigaraya, Goddess Somanayaki, Goddess Andal and others. The most charming statue of Lord Channakeshava has been placed at about 12 ft. above the ground level. As described in one of the hymns — Sri Keshavam Divyam Anantarupam — the Lord has been depicted in the form of Mohini, always ready to be decorated for the Divya (divine) Mohini Alankarotsav during the car festival. Statues of Rati and Manmatha, the goddess and god of love in Hindu scriptures, have been placed on either side of the main entrance. This is said to be a rare phenomenon in temples of this kind. ಪ್ರಾಚೀನ ಭಾರತದ ಪ್ರಸಿದ್ದ ಮಧ್ಯಕಾಲೀನ ಶಿಲ್ಪಕಲಾ ಕೃತಿಗಳಲ್ಲಿ ಅತ್ಯಂತ ಉತ್ಕೃಷ್ಟವಾದುದೆಂದು ಪ್ರಸಿದ್ಧವಾಗಿರುವ ಬೇಲೂರಿನ ಶ್ರೀ ಚೆನ್ನಕೇಶವನ ದೇವಾಲಯವನ್ನು ಹೊಯ್ಸಳರ ಅರಸನೊಬ್ಬನು ತಾನು ಸಾಧಿಸಿದ ಸಮರದ ಗೆಲುವಿನ ಜ್ಞಾಪಕಾರ್ಥವಾಗಿ ನಿರ್ಮಿಸಿದನು ಎಂದು ತಿಳಿದುಬರುತ್ತದೆ. ಕ್ರಿ.ಶ 1117ರಲ್ಲಿ ಆರಂಭಗೊಂಡ ಈ ದೇವಾಲಯದ ನಿರ್ಮಾಣಕಾರ್ಯವು ಸುಮಾರು 103 ವರ್ಷಗಳ ನಂತರ ಪೂರ್ಣಗೊಂಡಿತು. ದೇವಸ್ಥಾನದ ಪ್ರಮುಖ ಕಟ್ಟಡವನ್ನು ನಕ್ಷತ್ರಾಕಾರದ ಪ್ರಾಕಾರದ ಮೇಲೆ ನಿರ್ಮಿಸಲಾಗಿದೆ. ಈ ದೇವಸ್ಥಾನವು ಬೃಹದಾಕಾರದ ಆನೆ, ಕುದುರೆ ಹಾಗೂ ಮಾನವರೂಪದ ವಿಗ್ರಹಗಳನ್ನು ಹೊಂದಿದೆ. ಈ ದೇವಾಲಯದಲ್ಲಿ ಕಂಡುಬರುವ ಶಿಲಾಬಾಲಿಕೆ, ದೇವ-ದೇವತೆಗಳ ವಿಗ್ರಹಗಳು ಅತ್ಯಂತ ಸುಂದರವಾಗಿವೆ. ಆದ್ದರಿಂದಲೇ ಬೇಲೂರಿನ ಶ್ರೀ ಚೆನ್ನಕೇಶವನ ದೇವಾಲಯವನ್ನು ಆಭರಣಗಳ ಸಂದೂಕ ಎಂದು ಕರೆಯಲಾಗಿದೆ. ಶ್ರೀ ಚೆನ್ನಕೇಶವನ ದೇವಸ್ಥಾನದ ಸುತ್ತ ಕಪ್ಪೆ ಚೆನ್ನಿಗರಾಯ, ರಂಗನಾಯಕಿ, ಸೌಮ್ಯಕೇಶ್ವರಿ ಮತ್ತು ಆಂಡಾಳ್ ದೇವಸ್ಥಾನಗಳನ್ನು ನಿರ್ಮಿಸಲಾಗಿದೆ. ಶ್ರೀ ಚೆನ್ನಕೇಶವನ ವಿಗ್ರಹವನ್ನು ನೆಲದಿಂದ 12 ಅಡಿ ಎತ್ತರದಲ್ಲಿ ಸ್ಥಾಪಿಸಲಾಗಿದೆ. "ಶ್ರೀ ಕೇಶವ ದಿವ್ಯಂ ಅನಂತ ರೂಪಂ" ಅಂದರೆ ಶ್ರೀ ಕೇಶವನು ದಿವ್ಯವಾದ ಅನಂತರೂಪವನ್ನು ಹೊಂದಿದ್ದಾನೆ. ಅಂತೆಯೇ ಶ್ರೀ ಕೇಶವನನ್ನು ಉತ್ಸವಾದಿ ವಿಶೇಷ ಸಂದರ್ಭಗಳಲ್ಲಿ ಮೋಹಿನಿಯ ರೂಪದಲ್ಲಿ ಅಲಂಕರಿಸಲಾಗುವುದು. ದೇವಸ್ಥಾನದ ಪ್ರಥಮ ದ್ವಾರದಲ್ಲಿ ರತಿ-ಮನ್ಮಥರ ಸುಂದರ ವಿಗ್ರಹಗಳನ್ನು ಎರಡು ಬದಿಯಲ್ಲಿ ನಿಲ್ಲಿಸಲಾಗಿದೆ. ಇದೊಂದು ವಿಶಿಷ್ಟ ಹಾಗೂ ಅಪರೂಪದ ವಿನ್ಯಾಸವಾಗಿದೆ.

According to a legend, the idol of Lord Keshava was unearthed by Sri Ramanujacharya, the proponent of Sri Vishishtadwaita, when he visited this place as part of his entourage for cultural propagation, and got it installed under the auspices of then then Hoysala king, Vishnuvardhana. It is said that Lord Keshava appeared in the dreams of both Vishnuvardhana and Sri Ramanujacharya simultaneously on the same night and ordered them to get the idol consecrated and a temple constructed for the same. The chariot at Sri Chennakeshava temple constructed by a subordinate king of the Vijayanagara Empire was renovated in 1959 by craftsmen from Sagar and Soraba. The car festival is held for 14 days during Chaitra Masa (March - April) every year. Several giant vehicles (Vahanas) in the form of various animals like horses, elephants of exquisite workmanship have been carved and placed at various locations on the temple premises. Rathastham Keshavam Drishtva Punarjanma Na Vidyate – viewing of Lord Chennakeshava seated in a chariot ensures relief from cycles of birth and death. ದಂತೆಕಥೆಯೊಂದರಂತೆ, ವಿಶಿಷ್ಟಾದ್ವೈತದ ಮೂಲ ಗುರುಗಳಾದ ಶ್ರೀ ರಾಮಾನುಜರು ಇಲ್ಲಿ ಪ್ರತಿಷ್ಠಾಪಿಸಲಾಗಿರುವ ಶ್ರೀ ಕೇಶವನ ವಿಗ್ರಹವನ್ನು ಭೂಗರ್ಭದಿಂದ ಉತ್ಖನನ ಮಾಡಿ ಅಂದಿನ ಹೊಯ್ಸಳೇಶ್ವರ ವಿಷ್ಣುವರ್ಧನನ ಆದೇಶದ ಮೇರೆಗೆ ವಿಗ್ರಹದ ಪ್ರತಿಷ್ಠಾಪನೆ ಹಾಗೂ ದೇವಾಲಯದ ನಿರ್ಮಾಣ ಕಾರ್ಯವನ್ನು ಕೈಗೊಂಡರು. ಶ್ರೀ ರಾಮಾನುಜಾಚಾರ್ಯರು ಬೇಲೂರಿಗೆ ಆಗಮಿಸಿದ್ದರೆಂದೂ, ಒಂದು ರಾತ್ರಿ ಅವೆರಿಗೆ ಮತ್ತು ವಿಷ್ಣುವರ್ಧನನಿಗೆ ಏಕಕಾಲದಲ್ಲಿ ಕೇಶವನು ಸ್ವಪ್ನದಲ್ಲಿ ಕಾಣಿಸಿಕೊಂಡು ಭೂಗರ್ಭದಲ್ಲಡಗಿರುವ ತನ್ನ ವಿಗ್ರಹವನ್ನು ಹೊರತೆಗೆಸಿ ಪ್ರತಿಷ್ಠಾಪಿಸಬೇಕೆಂದೂ ಆದೇಶಿಸಲಾಗಿ ಈ ದೇವಾಲಯವನ್ನು ನಿರ್ಮಿಸಲಾಯಿತೆಂದೂ ಹೇಳಲಾಗುತ್ತದೆ. ಬೇಲೂರಿನ ಸುತ್ತಲು ಪಂಚ ಆಂಜನೇಯ ಹಾಗು ಪಂಚಲಿಂಗಗಳ ದೇವಾಲಯಗಳಿದ್ದು ಇವೆಲ್ಲವುಗಳೂ 95 ಹಳ್ಳಿಗಳಿಂದ ಸುತ್ತುವರಿದಿರುವುವೆಂದು ಪ್ರತೀತಿಯಿದೆ. ಚನ್ನಕೇಶವ ದೇವಾಲಯವು 1959ರಲ್ಲಿ ಜೀರ್ಣೋದ್ದಾರಗೊಂಡಿತು. “ರಥಸ್ಥಂ ಕೇಶವಂ ದೃಷ್ಟ್ವಾ ಪುನರ್ಜನ್ಮ ನ ವಿದ್ಯತೇ”, ಅಂದರೆ ರಥಾರೂಢನಾದ ಕೇಶವನ ದರ್ಶನ ಮಾಡಿದರೆ ಪುನರ್ಜನ್ಮವಿರುವುದಿಲ್ಲವೆಂದು ಹೇಳುವಂತೆ ಬೇಲೂರು ಶ್ರೀ ಚೆನ್ನಕೇಶವನ ಉತ್ಸವವನ್ನು ವೀಕ್ಷಿಸುವುದು ಅತ್ಯಂತ ಶುಭಕರ.
