The presiding deities at Padubidri Sri Mahaganapati Sri Mahalingeshwara temple are believed to have been consecrated by Sage Bhrugu. The idol of Lord Mahaganapati in this temple is made of Rudrakshi stone. This idol is said to have been consecrated by Lord Parashurama, one of the ten incarnations of Lord Vishnu, who, after destroying unruly Kshatriyas, took a holy dip in the sea here to clear the stain of blood from his body. Later, he worshipped Lord Mahalingeshwara and consecrated the idol of Mahaganapati. Lord Parashurama threw his weapon Parashu across the sea, ordering the king of sea Lord Varuna, to push the water backwards by a few miles. The portion of land that emerged after the sea was pushed back came to be known as Parashurama Kshetra, now called as Tulunadu. Lord Parashurama donated the land thus acquired to Brahmins to set up Agraharas or groups of residential houses. One such Agrahara exists in Padubidri, behind Sri Mhalingeshwara Mahaganapati temple. ಪಡುಬಿದ್ರಿಯ ಶ್ರೀ ಮಹಾಲಿಂಗೇಶ್ವರನ ಲಿಂಗವು ಭೃಗು ಮಹರ್ಷಿಗಳಿಂದಸ್ಥಾಪಿತವಾದ ಬಗ್ಗೆ ಐತಿಹ್ಯವಿದೆ. ಕ್ಷತ್ರಿಯ ಸಂಹಾರದಿಂದ ಉಂಟಾದ ಮಲಿನತೆಯ ನಿವಾರಣೆಗಾಗಿ ಭಾರ್ಗವ(ಪರಶುರಾಮ)ನು ಪಶ್ಚಿಮ ಕರಾವಳಿ ಕಡಲ ತೀರಕ್ಕೆ ಬಂದು ಇಲ್ಲಿನ ಪರಶಿವನನ್ನು ಭಜಿಸಿ, ಅಪೂರ್ವವಾದ ರುದ್ರಾಕ್ಷಿ ಶಿಲೆಯಲ್ಲಿ ನಿರ್ಮಿತವಾದ ವಿಘ್ನೇಶ್ವರ ಪ್ರತಿಮೆಯನ್ನು ಪ್ರತಿಷ್ಠಾಪಿಸಿದ ಬಗ್ಗೆ ಮಾಹಿತಿ ಇದೆ. ದೇವಾಲಯದ ಹಿಂಬದಿಯಲ್ಲಿರುವ ಸಾಗರವನ್ನು ದೃಷ್ಟಿಸಿ ಪರಶುರಾಮನು ತನ್ನ ಪರಶುವನ್ನು ಎಸೆಯುತ್ತಾನೆ. ಹಿಂದಕ್ಕೆ ಸರಿಯುವಂತೆ ಸಮುದ್ರ ರಾಜನಿಗೆ ಆಜ್ಞಾಪಿಸುತ್ತಾನೆ. ಸಮುದ್ರವು ಹಿಂದೆ ಸರಿದ ಪರಿಣಾಮವಾಗಿ ನಿರ್ಮಿತವಾದ ಭೂ ಪ್ರದೇಶವನ್ನು ತುಲು ನಾಡು ಎಂದು ಕರೆಯಲಾಗುತ್ತದೆ. ಪರುಶನಾಮನು ಬ್ರಾಹ್ಮಣರಿಗೆ ಅಗ್ರಹಾರ ಮತ್ತು ಅವರ ವಾಸಕ್ಕೆ ವಸತಿಗಾಗಿ ಪ್ರದೇಶವನ್ನು ದಾನ ನೀಡಿ ತೆರಳುತ್ತಾನೆ. ಅಂತಹದರಲ್ಲಿ ಒಂದು ಅಗ್ರಹಾರವು ಪಡುಬಿದ್ರೆಯಲ್ಲಿ ಅಸ್ತಿತ್ವದಲ್ಲಿದೆ. ಅಗ್ರಹಾರದ ಹಿಂಬದಿಯಲ್ಲಿ ಶ್ರೀ ಮಹಾಲಿಂಗೇಶ್ವರ ಮಹಾಗಣಪತಿ ದೇವಸ್ಥಾನವಿದೆ.

According to sources, during the British regime, a British officer was going in front of the temple on his horse. As soon the horse crossed the temple, it swooned and stumbled on the ground. The officer was taken aback and sought help from the priests of the temple. The priests came out and sprinkled the holy water (teertha) on the horse, which was lying on the ground without consciousness. The horse regained its consciousness after the holy water was sprinkled on it. The officer enquired about the special offerings done at the temple and learnt that Pottappa Seva to Lord Mahaganapati was special dear to the Lord. He donated a land as Umbali or Dharmasadhana for offering Pottappa Seva to the Lord in this temple for all times to come. This seva continues to be offered in the temple even to this day. ಮೂಲಗಳ ಪ್ರಕಾರ, ಒಂದು ಸಲ ಓರ್ವ ಬ್ರಿಟಿಷ್ ದೊರೆ ದೇವಾಲಯದ ಮುಂಭಾಗದಲ್ಲಿ ತನ್ನ ಕುದುರೆಯ ಮೇಲೆ ಸವಾರಿ ಮಾಡಿಕೊಂಡು ಹೋಗುತ್ತಿದ್ದನಂತೆ. ಇದ್ದಕಿದ್ದಂತೆ ಆತನ ಕುದುರೆಯು ಮೂರ್ಛಾವಸ್ಥೆಯನ್ನು ಹೊಂದಲು ವಿಸ್ಮಯಗೊಂಡ ದೊರೆ ತಕ್ಷಣ ದೇವಸ್ಥಾನದ ಅರ್ಚಕರನ್ನು ಕರೆಸಿ ತೀರ್ಥ ಪ್ರೋಕ್ಷಣೆಯನ್ನು ಮಾಡಿಸಿದನಂತೆ. ಕುದುರೆ ಚೇತರಿಸಿಕೊಂಡು ಹಿಂದಿನಂತೆ ಸವಾರಿಗೆ ಸಿದ್ಧವಾಯಿತು. ಆ ಬ್ರಿಟಿಷ್ ಅಧಿಕಾರಿಯು ದೇವಸ್ಥಾನದಲ್ಲಿ ನಡೆಯುವ ವಿಶೇಷ ಅರ್ಪಣೆಗಳ ಬಗ್ಗೆ ವಿಚಾರಿಸಿದರು. ಅದರಲ್ಲಿ ದೇವಸ್ಥಾನದಲ್ಲಿ ಗಣಪತಿಗೆ ನಡೆಯುವ ಪೊಟ್ಟಪ್ಪ ಎಂಬ ವಿಶೇಷ ಸೇವೆಯ ಬಗ್ಗೆ ತಿಳಿದುಕೊಂಡರು. ಅಧಿಕಾರಿಯು ಪೊಟ್ಟಪ್ಪ ಸೇವಾರ್ಪಣೆಗೆ ಅನುಕೂಲಕ್ಕಾಗಿ ಭೂಪ್ರದೇಶವನ್ನು ಉಂಬಾಲಿ ಅಥವಾ ಧರ್ಮಸದನದ ನಿರ್ಮಾಣಕ್ಕಾಗಿ ದೇವಸ್ಥಾನಕ್ಕೆ ದಾನ ಮಾಡಿದನು. ಈ ಸೇವೆಯು ಅಂದಿನಿಂದಲೂ ನಡೆಯುತ್ತಾ ಬರುತ್ತಿದೆ.
