Long ago, an old Brahmin lived in Thanniyil Illam of Elampanakkadu. He used to go to Kodungalloor once every month to propitiate the Goddess Kodungallooramma. Later, when his health was going down, he became fearful on his monthly routine, to cover a very long distance to worship. Hence he was submitting his tearful prayers before Devi to grant him a solution. On that day, in the Brahmin’s dream, Devi appeared. Devi said, “When you wake up, you might be able to see an umbrella. My presence would be in that umbrella for ever so that you can avoid travelling a long way to worship me”. The Brahmin woke up and saw the umbrella as Devi told him in his dream. He took the umbrella in hand and started to walk towards Elambanakkadu. On his way, he placed the umbrella down on the ground to take a rest. When he woke up and about to continue his walk, the Umbrella was seen affixed on the ground. The King was informed about the presence of Kodungallooramma with the help of astrological connections. The Brahmin had another dream, in which Amma suggested him to build a temple in the bamboo-cane forest nearby. In continuance, a Yakshi named Elumbi making many disturbances in the Elumbanakkadu was slayed and a bell on her neck was thrown away to the southern side. Eventually Elumbanakkadu became Manarcaud. This is the legend behind the temple. പണ്ടു പണ്ട് ഇളമ്പനക്കാട് പ്രദേശത്തു താന്നിയില് ഇല്ലത്ത് വൃദ്ധനായ ഒരു ബ്രാഹ്മണനുണ്ടായിരുന്നു. അദ്ദേഹം ദിവസേന കൊടുങ്ങല്ലൂർ പോയി ദേവിയെ വന്ദിക്കുക പതിവായിരുന്നു. തന്റെ ആരോഗ്യം മോശമായതോടെ ഇനിയും ഏറെ ദൂരം താണ്ടി വന്നു തനിക്ക് ക്ഷേത്രദർശനം നടത്താനാവില്ലെന്നു ആശങ്ക തോന്നുകയും അങ്ങനെ വന്നാൽ തന്റെ ക്ഷേത്രദർശനം മുടങ്ങുമെന്ന ഭയം അദ്ദേഹത്തിനുണ്ടാകുകയും ചെയ്തു. തുടർന്ന് ആ ബ്രാഹ്മണൻ ദേവിയോട് ഒരു നിവൃത്തിയുണ്ടാക്കി തരണമേയെന്നു പ്രാർത്ഥിക്കുകയും അന്നേ ദിവസം ദേവി അദ്ദേഹത്തിന്റെ സ്വപ്നത്തിൽ ദർശനം നൽകിക്കൊണ്ട് ഇങ്ങനെ അരുളി ചെയ്തു " ഉണർന്നെണീക്കുമ്പോൾ മുൻപിലൊരു കുട കാണാം. ആ കുടയിൽ എന്റെ സാന്നിധ്യമുണ്ടാകും . അതും കൊണ്ട് നാട്ടിലേക്ക് മടങ്ങിക്കൊള്ളുക. വീണ്ടും എന്നെക്കാണാൻ കൊടുങ്ങല്ലൂർ വരേണ്ടതില്ല". ഉറക്കമുണർന്ന ബ്രാഹ്മണൻ തന്റെ മുൻപിലുള്ള കുട കണ്ടു അത്യധികം ആഹ്ലാദത്തോടെ അതുമെടുത്ത് ഇല്ലത്തേക്ക് യാത്ര തിരിച്ചു. ഇലുമ്പനക്കാട്ടിലെത്തിയ ബ്രാഹ്മണൻ കുറച്ചു നേരം വിശ്രമിച്ചിട്ടു യാത്ര തുടരാമെന്ന് കരുതി ആ കുട നിലത്തു വെക്കുകയും അതവിടെ ഉറച്ചു പോകുകയും ചെയ്തു. തുടർന്ന് രാജാവിനെ വിവരമറിയിക്കുകയും ജ്യോൽസ്യൻ അവിടെ കൊടുങ്ങല്ലൂരമ്മയുടെ സാന്നിധ്യം കാണുകയും ചെയ്തു. ബ്രാഹ്മണന് വീണ്ടും അമ്മയുടെ സ്വപ്നദര്ശനമുണ്ടാകുകയും തൊട്ടടുത്ത ചൂരൽക്കാട്ടിൽ തനിക്കായി ഒരു ക്ഷേത്രം നിർമിക്കുവാൻ 'അമ്മ അരുളി ചെയ്യുകയും ചെയ്തു. തുടർന്ന് എലുമ്പനക്കാട്ടിൽ നിരന്തരം പ്രശ്നങ്ങളുണ്ടായിരുന്ന ഇലമ്പിഎന്ന യക്ഷിയെ വധിക്കുകയും അവളുടെ കഴുത്തിലെ മണി തെക്കുഭാഗത്തേക്ക് വലിച്ചെറിയുകയും ചെയ്തു. ഇതേതുടർന്ന് ഇലുമ്പനർക്കാട് മണിയെറിഞ്ഞകാടാകുകയും തുടർന്നത് മണർകാട് ആകുകയും ചെയ്തുവെന്നാണ് ഐതീഹ്യം.
