It is believed that sage Jangaman had lived here around 2000 years ago, and the place was initially known as Jangaman, which later changed to Chengamanad. A famous Lord Murugan Temple is located on the spot where the sage is said to have meditated which was later consecrated by “Chattambi Swamikal” in 1898 in the presence of “Sree Narayana Guru”. Later it was clarified that there exists the presence of Lord Shiva also and therefore he was also consecrated in the same Sanctum.Thus the speciality is that Lord Shiva's deity and Lord Subramanya's deity is existing in the same Sanctum which is seen very rare. Another story goes that Lord Murugan also called as Guhan had made this place his abode and hence the name Guhalayam it seems. ഏതാണ്ട് 2000 വര്‍ഷങ്ങള്‍ക്കു മുന്‍പ് ഇവിടെ ജന്ഗാമന്‍ എന്ന ഒരു മുനിവര്യന്‍ ജീവിച്ചിരുന്നതായി പറയപ്പെടുന്നു.തന്മൂലം ഈ സ്ഥലം ജന്ഗാമന്‍ എന്നായിരുന്നു ആദ്യകാലങ്ങളില്‍ അറിയപ്പെട്ടിരുന്നത്.പിന്നീട് ചെങ്ങമനാട് എന്ന പേരില്‍ ഈ സ്ഥലം അറിയപ്പെടുവാന്‍ തുടങ്ങി എന്നാണ് ചരിത്രം പറയുന്നത്.ആ സന്യാസി ധ്യാനിച്ചിരുന്ന സ്ഥലത്ത് 1898 ല്‍ ശ്രീ നാരായണ ഗുരുവിന്റെ സാന്നിധ്യത്തില്‍ ചട്ടമ്പി സ്വാമികളാല്‍ സുബ്രഹ്മണ്യ സ്വാമിയുടെ പ്രതിഷ്ഠ നടത്തപ്പെടുകയും ചെയ്തു.പിന്നീട് ഈ സ്ഥലത്ത് ശിവ ഭഗവാന്‍റെ സാന്നിധ്യം കാണപ്പെടുകയും ഒരേ കോവിലില്‍ സുബ്രഹ്മണ്യനോടൊപ്പം ശിവന്‍റെയും പ്രതിഷ്ഠ നടത്തുകയും ചെയ്തു.ശിവന്‍റെയും സുബ്രമണ്യന്‍റെയും പ്രതിഷ്ഠകള്‍ ഒരേ ശ്രീകോവിലില്‍ ദര്‍ശിച്ച് സായൂജ്യമടയുകയെന്നത് ഭക്തര്‍ക്ക്‌ വളരെ അപൂര്‍വമായി ലഭിക്കുന്ന ഒരു അനുഗ്രഹമാണ്. സുബ്രമണ്യന്‍റെ മറ്റൊരു പേരാണ് ഗുഹന്‍.അതിനാല്‍ സുബ്രമണ്യന്‍ തന്നെ സൃഷ്ടിച്ച അദ്ദേഹത്തിന്‍റെ ആലയം എന്നതാണ് ഗുഹാലയം എന്നു പറയുന്നതിലും തെറ്റുണ്ടാകുമെന്നു കരുതുന്നില്ല.
