Though no records are available to prove the antiquity of the temple, it is almost visible by a view of the Srikovil built in rock, as itself a proof to substantiate the ancient oldness of the temple. This divine centre was owned by Punathil Illam. The ancestors here were the sincere devotees of Kodungallooramma and their upasana helped those to bring in Devi Chaithanyam. Here, there had been a great practice of revelations and predictions by temple oracle. His manifesting words could give relief and release to the devotees. Upto some 5 decades it was all continuing. ക്ഷേത്രത്തിന്‍റെ കാലപ്പഴക്കത്തെ തെളിയിക്കുന്ന ചരിത്ര രേഖകളൊന്നും ലഭ്യമല്ലെങ്കിലും ശിലയില്‍ തീര്‍ത്ത ക്ഷേത്ര ശ്രീകോവില്‍ ക്ഷേത്രത്തിന്‍റെ പൌരാണികതയ്ക്ക് പ്രത്യക്ഷ തെളിവായി നിലനില്ക്കു ന്നുണ്ട്. പുനത്തില്‍ ഇല്ലം വകയാണ് ക്ഷേത്രം. ഇല്ലത്തിലെ കാരണവന്മാര്‍ കൊടുങ്ങല്ലൂരമ്മയെ ഉപാസിച്ച് കൊണ്ട് വന്ന്‍ പ്രതിഷ്ടിച്ചതാണ് എന്നാണ് വിശ്വാസം. ക്ഷേത്രത്തിന് ഏകദേശം 800 കൊല്ലത്തെ പഴക്കം ഉണ്ടെന്നു കരുതപ്പെടുന്നു. 50 കൊല്ലം മുൻപ് വരെ ക്ഷേത്രത്തിൽ വെളിച്ചപ്പാടുറഞ്ഞു തുള്ളി ഭക്തരുടെ സങ്കടങ്ങൾ അരുളപ്പാടുകൾ കൊണ്ട് നിവൃത്തി വരുത്തുന്ന പതിവുണ്ടായിരുന്നു.
