The Ananta Padmanabha temple in Kunjibettu is said to be the contemporary of Sri Anantheswara temple in Udupi. According to legends, the idol of Lord Ananta Padmanabha, who had disappeared in water due to floods, appeared in the dream of a Brahmin, belonging to “Kunji Theramba” family and told him that he was in Pani. It is believed that Lord Anantha Padmanabha had directed him to consecrate his idol in this holy shrine.
The restoration work of the temple is entrusted to Sri Puttige Mutt, one of the Ashtha Mutts of Udupi.

Legend behind the name of the temple /
Lord Anantha Padmanabha is named as “Paniyadi Anantha Padmanabha” for two reasons.
• ‘Pani’ in Tulu denotes ‘container used to lift water from well. Since the god is taken out from the “Pani”, the Temple is called as Paniyadi Anantha Padmanabha
• ‘Pani’ in Sanskrit means ‘Shesha’ (Snake). The lord is named as Paniyadi Ananta Padmanabha as they found the idol, seated on the Sheshasana
