There are many interesting legendary stories about the Lord Ranganathaswamy, the temple deity. A huge pair of sandals has been kept in the temple Sanctum. Lord is believed to wear them and go roaming in the forest at night daily. The sandals are replaced once they are found worn out. The villagers of nearby Boodi Tittu villagers offer the sandals as their offering to the lord even now. The Tribal inhabitant of Soliga Community living in their Podi the hutments at the hillock consider Lord Ranganatha as their brother-in-law, which means their sister's husband. It is said in their Janapada story that Lord Ranganatha was wandering in the forest happens to meet the Soliga tribal girl Kusumale and marries her. It is also believed that Lord Ranganatha used to meet Kusumale every night on the pretext of hunting Rabbit. There is an epic story that, Sage Parushurama did penance at this hillock and worshipped Lord Ranganatha to absolve him from Matruhatya Dosha(He beheads his mother as ordered by his father Sage Jamadagni). A Riveret which takes its birth here is being called in his name as Bhargavi a tributary of the River Cauvery. The hillock is also famous for its gigantic Champaka tree locally called as Dodda Sampige which is believed to be very old. The temple of Sri Anjaneyaswamy temple also exists near Vadagere village. Soliga tribals take part in the temple works during Rathotsava period. ಶ್ರೀ ರಂಗನಾಥ ಸ್ವಾಮಿಯ ಬಗ್ಗೆ ಸಾಕಷ್ಟು ಐತಿಹಾಸಿಕ ಕಥೆಗಳಿವೆ. ದೇವಸ್ಥಾನದಲ್ಲಿ ಒಂದು ಜೊತೆ ಪಾದರಕ್ಷೆ ಇದ್ದು ಪಾದರಕ್ಷೆಯನ್ನು ಶ್ರೀ ರಂಗನಾಥ ಸ್ವಾಮಿಯು ಪ್ರತಿದಿನವೂ ಧರಿಸಿ ರಾತ್ರಿಯ ವೇಳೆಯಲ್ಲಿ ವನವಿಹಾರಕ್ಕೆ ಹೋಗುತ್ತಾನೆ ಎಂಬ ನಂಬಿಕೆ ಇದೆ. 3 ವರ್ಷಕ್ಕೊಮ್ಮೆ ಈ ಪಾದರಕ್ಷೆಯನ್ನು ಬದಲಾಯಿಸುತ್ತಾರೆ. ಬೂದೀತಿಟ್ಟು ಗ್ರಾಮದವರು ಈ ಪಾದರಕ್ಷೆಯನ್ನು ಅರ್ಪಿಸುತ್ತಾರೆ. ಸೋಲಿಗ ಜನಾಂಗದವರು ಪೊಡಿಯಲ್ಲಿ ವಾಸಿಸುವವರು. ಇವರುಗಳು ರಂಗನಾಥಸ್ವಾಮಿಯು ತಮ್ಮ ಭಾವ (ಸಹೋದರಿಯ ಗಂಡ) ಎಂದು ತಿಳಿಯುತ್ತಾರೆ. ಈ ಕಥೆಯು ಜನಪದ ಶೈಲಿಯಲ್ಲಿದೆ. ಒಂದು ಸಾರಿ ರಂಗನಾಥ ಸ್ವಾಮಿಯು ರಾತ್ರಿಯ ವೇಳೆಯಲ್ಲಿ ವನ ಸಂಚಾರಕ್ಕೆ ಹೋದಾಗ ಸೋಲಿಗ ಜನಾಂಗದ ಕುಸುಮಾಲೆ ಎಂಬ ಹುಡುಗಿಯನ್ನು ನೋಡಿ ಮದುವೆಯಾದನು ಎಂಬ ನಂಬಿಕೆ ಇದೆ. ಈಗಲೂ ಸಹ ರಂಗನಾಥಸ್ವಾಮಿಯು ಕುಸುಮಲೆಯನ್ನು ಪ್ರತಿದಿನ ರಾತ್ರಿ ಭೇಟಿಯಾಗುವನೆಂಬ ಪ್ರತೀತಿ ಇದೆ. ಸೋಲಿಗ ಜನಾಂಗದವರು ರಥೋತ್ಸವದ ಕಾಲದಲ್ಲಿ ದೇವಸ್ಥಾನದ ಕೆಲಸಗಳನ್ನು ಮಾಡುವುದಲ್ಲದೆ ಈ ಜನಾಂಗದವರು ಬದುಕಿರುವ ಮೊಲವನ್ನು ರಥೋತ್ಸವದ ದಿನಗಳಲ್ಲಿ ದೇವರಿಗೆ ಅರ್ಪಿಸುತ್ತಾರೆ. ಇನ್ನೊಂದು ಕಥೆಯ ಪ್ರಕಾರ ಪರುಶರಾಮನು ಮಾತೃಹತ್ಯಾದೋಷದಿಂದ ಪರಿಹಾರ ಹೊಂದಲು ರಂಗನಾಥ ಸ್ವಾಮಿಯನ್ನು ಪ್ರಾರ್ಥಿಸಿದ್ದನು. ಈ ಸ್ಥಳದಲ್ಲಿ ಹುಟ್ಟುವ ನದಿಗೆ ಭಾರ್ಗವಿ ಹೆಸರಿನಿಂದ ಕರೆಯಲಾಗುತ್ತದೆ. ಈ ಬೆಟ್ಟದಲ್ಲಿ ಒಂದು ದೊಡ್ಡ ಸಂಪಿಗೆ ಮರವಿದ್ದು ಇದು ಬಹಳ ಹಳೆಯ ವೃಕ್ಷವಾಗಿದೆ. ವಡ್ಡಿಗೆರೆ ಹಳ್ಳಿಯ ಹತ್ತಿರ ಶ್ರೀ ಆಂಜನೇಯಸ್ವಾಮಿ ದೇವಸ್ಥಾನವಿದೆ.

ಶ್ರೀ ಬಿಳಿಗಿರಿ ರಂಗನಾಥಸ್ವಾಮಿ ದೇವಸ್ಥಾನಕ್ಕೆ ಹೊಂದಿಕೊಂಡಂತೆ ಬಲಭಾಗದಲ್ಲಿ ಶ್ರೀ ಅಲುಮೇಲು ರಂಗನಾಯಕಮ್ಮನವರ ದೇವಸ್ಥಾನವು ಇರುತ್ತದೆ. ದೇವಾಲಯದ ಪ್ರಕಾರ ನವರಂಗ ಹಾಗೂ ಮುಖ ಮಂಟಪ ಮೊದಲಾದವು ಸಾಮಾನ್ಯ ರೀತಿಯ ದ್ರಾವಿಡ ಶೈಲಿಯ ಕಟ್ಟಡ ನವರಂಗದ ಎಡಭಾಗದಲ್ಲಿ ನಮ್ಮೂಳ್ವರ್ ಜೀಯರ್ ಮತ್ತು ರಾಮಾನುಜಚಾರ್ಯರು ಅಲ್ಲದೆ ವೇದಾಂತಾಚಾರ್ಯರ ವಿಗ್ರಹವೂ ಕೂಡ ಇದೆ. ಇಲ್ಲಿನ ಬಿಳಿಕಲ್ಲು ತಿರುವೆಂಕಟನಾಥನಿಗೆ ಹದಿನಾರಿನ ಮುದ್ದೂರಾಜನು 1667 ರಲ್ಲಿ ದತ್ತಿ ಬಿಟ್ಟಿದ್ದನು. ದಿವಾನ ಪೂರ್ಣಯ್ಯನವರು ಈ ದೇವಾಲಯದ ಸೇವೆಗಾಗಿ ಎರಡು ಗ್ರಾಮಗಳನ್ನು ದತ್ತಿಯಾಗಿ ಬಿಟ್ಟಿದ್ದರೆಂದು ತಿಳಿದು ಬರುತ್ತದೆ. ಬ್ರಹ್ಮಾಂಡ ಪುರಾಣದಲ್ಲಿ ಈ ಬೆಟ್ಟವನ್ನು ದಕ್ಷಿಣ ತಿರುಪತಿ ಎಂದು ಕರೆಯಲಾಗಿದೆ. ಅಲ್ಲದೆ ಶ್ರೀ ಗಂಗಾಧರೇಶ್ವರ ಸ್ವಾಮಿ, ಶ್ರೀ ಆಂಜನೇಯ ಸ್ವಾಮಿ, ಶ್ರೀ ಗಜೇಂದ್ರ ಸ್ವಾಮಿ ದೇವಸ್ಥಾನಗಳು ಸಹ ಶ್ರೀ ಬಿಳಿಗಿರಿರಂಗನಾಥಸ್ವಾಮಿ ದೇವಸ್ಥಾನಕ್ಕೆ ಸೇರಿರುತ್ತವೆ. The deity Sri Biligiri Ranganathaswamy a beautiful idol of 5 feet in height and said to have been consecrated by Sri Vashista Mahamuni of ancient time. On the right wing of a temple there is another temple built for goddess Alamelu Ranganayakamma. The temple is of Dravidian architecture and said to have been renovated by Vishnuvardhana. The temple houses the idols of Nammalvarji, Ramanujacharya and Venkatacharya the Vaisnava disciples. The history of the temple dates back to the year 1667 and has been built by the Then Paleyagar Sree Mudduraju of Hadinadu and these hills were given as 'Datti' to the Lord Poornaiah of the erstwhile Mysore Samstana of Wodeyar period left two villages to the temple as Dattigramas. There are other temples like Sree Gangadhareshwara temple, Sree Anjaneyaswamy temple and Sri Gajendraswamy temple at the close vicinity of the main temple Biligiri Ranganatha.
