The Bull Temple was built in 1537 by Kempe Gowda I, a vassal under the Vijayanagara Empire, in the Vijayanagara style of architecture. Kempe Gowda is the founder of d Bengaluru. The temple shrine or sanctum sanctorum has become black due to rubbing with charcoal and oil done for the last several years, according to sources. The temple is a small shrine, consisting of the sanctum sanctorum and an arch in Vijayanagara style. The current tower (Vimana Gopura) was constructed in the early 20th century and is adorned with Shiva-related images. ಬಸವನಗುಡಿಯಲ್ಲಿರುವ ದೊಡ್ಡ ಬಸವನ ದೇವಾಲಯವನ್ನು ಬೆಂಗಳೂರಿನ ರೂವಾರಿಯೆಂದು ಗುರುತಿಸಲ್ಪಡುವ ಮೊದಲನೆ ಕೆಂಪೇಗೌಡನು ವಿಜಯನಗರದ ಶಿಲ್ಪಕಲಾಶೈಲಿಯಲ್ಲಿ ಕ್ರಿ.ಶ. 1537ರಲ್ಲಿ ನಿರ್ಮಿಸಿದನು. ಈತನು ವಿಜಯನಗರದರಸರ ಸಾಮಂತನಾಗಿದ್ದನು. ಈ ದೇವಾಲಯದಲ್ಲಿರುವ ಬೃಹತ್ ದೊಡ್ಡ ಬಸವನ ವಿಗ್ರಹ ಹಾಗೂ ಗರ್ಭಗುಡಿಯು ಅನೇಕ ಸಂವತ್ಸರಗಳ ಕಾಲ ಇದ್ದಿಲನ್ನು ತೈದುದರ ಪರಿಣಾಮವಾಗಿ ಕಪ್ಪು ಬಣ್ಣಕ್ಕೆ ತಿರುವಿರುವುದೆಂದು ಹೇಳಲಾಗುತ್ತದೆ. ದೊಡ್ಡ ಗಣಪತಿ ದೇವಾಲಯದಲ್ಲಿರುವ ವಿಮಾನ ಗೋಪುರವನ್ನು ಇಪ್ಪತ್ತನೇ ಶತಮಾನದಲ್ಲಿ ನಿರ್ಮಿಸಲಾಯಿತು ಎಂದು ತಿಳಿದುಬರುತ್ತದೆ. ಈ ವಿಮಾನ ಗೋಪುರವನ್ನು ಪರಶಿವನಿಗೆ ಸಂಬಂಧಿಸಿದ ಘ್ಹಟನಾವಳಿಗಲ ಚಿತ್ರಗಳಿಂದ ಅಲಂಕರಿಸಲಾಗಿದೆ.
