Sri Gaddige Kendaganneshwara temple was established by Sri Guru Kendaganneshwara Swamy in 17th Century. Sri Guru Kendaganneshwaraswamy was from Shiggavi, Haveri District. He was a devotee of Shiva. He is said to have lived during the reign of Mysore Wodeyars. He came to this village of Gaddige and took Sannyasa and built a temple to Lord Shiva. He is said to have lived for 80 years. Legend has it that he would meditate sitting on an Agni Kunda without any harm. The temple complex was renovated 40 years ago by Mr Mahadevappa of Shimoga. ಶ್ರೀ ಗದ್ದಿಗೆ ಕೆಂಡಗಣ್ಣೇಶ್ವರ ದೇವಾಲಯವು ಶ್ರೀ ಕೆಂಡಗಣೇಶ್ವರ ಸ್ವಾಮಿಗಳಿಂದ 17ನೇ ಶತಮಾನದಲ್ಲಿ ಸ್ಥಾಪಿಸಲ್ಪಟ್ಟಿತು. ಈ ಶಿವನ ಮಹಾ ಭಕ್ತರು ಹಾವೇರಿ ಜಿಲ್ಲೆಯ ಶಿಗ್ಗಾವಿಯ ಗುರು ಕೆಂಡಗಣ್ಣೇಶ್ವರರು. ಇವರು ಮೈಸೂರು ವೊಡೆಯರ್‌ರ ಕಾಲದಲ್ಲಿ ಜೀವಿಸಿದ್ದರು. ಈ ಸಮಯದಲ್ಲಿ ಅವರು ಗದ್ದಿಗೆಗೆ ಬಂದು ಸನ್ನ್ಯಾಸ ದೀಕ್ಷೆ ಪಡೆದು ಮಹಾಶಿವನ ದೇವಾಲಯ ನಿರ್ಮಿಸಿದರು. ಅವರು 80 ವರ್ಷಗಳ ಕಾಲ ಬದುಕಿದ್ದರು ಎಂಬ ಐತಿಹ್ಯವಿದೆ.ಸ್ವಾಮಿಗಳು ಅಗ್ನಿಕುಂಡದ ಮೇಲೆ ಕುಳಿತು ಧ್ಯಾನ ಮಾಡುತ್ತಿದ್ದರೆಂದು ದಂತಕಥೆಗಳಿವೆ. ಇತ್ತೀಚಗೆ ಅಂದರೆ 40 ವರ್ಷಗಳ ಹಿಂದೆ ಈ ದೇವಾಲಯದ ಜೀರ್ಣೋದ್ಧಾರವನ್ನು ಶಿವಮೊಗ್ಗದ ಮಹಾದೇವಪ್ಪನವರು ಕೈಗೊಂಡಿದ್ದಾರೆ.
