Sri Sri Sri Samba Shiva Murthy Swamy wanted to build a temple for Lord Shiva with Koti (meaning crore in Kannada) lingams. In 1972, the Kotilingeshwara temple construction was started. The first lingam was installed by the Swamiji himself, and it was named as Sri Manjunatha Swamy. The fame of this temple spread all over the country and devotees started coming to the place to offer pooja in thousands. Soon, many small temples were built for other deities. Even today, people visit the temple to install a lingam to wash their sins and attain salvation. It is believed that about 90 lakh lingas already installed in the temple premises. ಶ್ರೀ ಶ್ರೀ ಶ್ರೀ ಸಾಂಬ ಶಿವ ಮೂರ್ತಿ ಸ್ವಾಮೀಜಿಗಳಿಗೆ ಕೋಟಿ ಲಿಂಗಗಳನ್ನೊಳಗೊಂಡ ಶಿವ ದೇವಾಲಯವನ್ನು ನಿರ್ಮಿಸಬೇಕೆಂಬ ಮಹಾತ್ವಾಕಾಂಕ್ಷೆಯಿತ್ತು. ಅದರಂತೆಯೇ ಅವರು 1972 ರಲ್ಲಿ ದೇವಸ್ಥಾನದ ನಿರ್ಮಾಣ ಕಾರ್ಯವನ್ನು ಕೈಗೊಂಡರು. ಇವರು ಮೊದಲಿಗೆ ಒಂದು ಲಿಂಗದ ಪ್ರತಿಷ್ಟಾಪನೆ ಮಾಡಿ ಅದಕ್ಕೆ ಮಂಜುನಾಥ ಸ್ವಾಮಿ ಎಂದು ಹೆಸರಿಟ್ಟು ಪೂಜೆ ಪ್ರಾರಂಭಿಸಿದರು. ಇವರ ಭಕ್ತಿ ಮತ್ತು ಪರಿಶ್ರಮ ಎಲ್ಲೆಡೆ ಪ್ರಚಲಿತವಾಯಿತು. ಭಕ್ತಾದಿಗಳು ಸಾವಿರಾರು ಸಂಖ್ಯೆಯಲ್ಲಿ ಬರತೊಡಗಿದರು. ಕ್ರಮೇಣ ಸಹಸ್ರಾರು ಲಿಂಗಗಳ ಸ್ಥಾಪನೆಯಾಯಿತು. ಅದೇ ರೀತಿ ಈ ದೇವಾಲಯದ ಪ್ರಕರದೊಳಗೆ ಬೇರೆ ಬೇರೆ ದೇವತೆಗಳ ಗುಡಿಗಳನ್ನು ಕಟ್ಟಲಾಯಿತು. ಭಕ್ತರ ಆಗಮಿಕೆಯೂ ಹೆಚ್ಚುತ್ತಾ ಹೋಯಿತು. ಇವತ್ತಿಗೆ ತೊಂಬತ್ತು ಲಕ್ಷಕ್ಕೂ ಹೆಚ್ಚು ಲಿಂಗಗಳ ಪ್ರತಿಷ್ಟಾಪನೆ ಆಗಿದೆ.

Devotees wanting to attain salvation were encouraged to install a lingam and offer their prayers to Lord Shiva. Installing a lingam and praying for salvation was a practice started by none other than Sri Rama. After vanquishing Ravana in the battle of Lanka and annointing Vibhishana, Sri Rama travelled to Rameswaram and installed a Lingam and offered prayers to Shiva. With this, he sought salvation to those who perished in the battle. Shri Shri Shri Samba Shiva Murthy Swamy believed this offers the best way to the worldly modern man in the Kali Yuga, to attain salvation. It is thus believed that offering Pooja to Shiva assures salvation. ತ್ರಿಮೂರ್ತಿಗಳಲ್ಲಿ ಶಿವನನ್ನು ಮೆಚ್ಚಿಸುವುದು ಸುಲಭವಲ್ಲ ಎಂದೂ ಕೋಟಿಲಿಂಗೇಶ್ವರಕ್ಕೆ ಭಕ್ತರು ಬಂದು ಲಿಂಗ ಪ್ರತಿಷ್ಟಾಪಿಸಿ ಪೂಜೆ ಸಲ್ಲಿಸಿದರೆ ಶಿವನ ಒಲುಮೆಗೆ ಪಾತ್ರರಾಗಬಹುದು ಎನ್ನುವ ನಂಬಿಕೆಯಿದೆ. ಈ ನಂಬಿಕೆಯ ಹಿಂದೆ ಶ್ರೀ ರಾಮನ ಕಥೆಯೊಂದು ಕಾರಣ. ಶ್ರೀರಾಮನು ಲಂಕೆಯಲ್ಲಿ ರಾವಣನನ್ನು ಗೆದ್ದು, ವಿಭೀಷಣನಿಗೆ ಪಟ್ಟ ಕಟ್ಟಿ ಅಲ್ಲಿಂದ ರಾಮೇಶ್ವರಕ್ಕೆ ತೆರಳಿ ಶಿವಲಿಂಗ ಪ್ರತಿಷ್ಟಾಪಿಸಿ ಶಿವನಿಗೆ ಭಕ್ತಿಯಿಂದ ಪೂಜೆ ಸಲ್ಲಿಸಿ, ಲಂಕೆಯ ಯುದ್ದದಲ್ಲಿ ಮಡಿದವರ ಆತ್ಮಕ್ಕೆ ಶಾಂತಿಕೊರಿದನಂತೆ. ಇದೇ ನಂಬಿಕೆಯ ಹಿನ್ನೆಲೆಯನಿಟ್ಟುಕೊಂಡು, ಸ್ವಾಮೀಜಿಗಳು ಈ ಕಲಿಯುಗದಲ್ಲಿಯೂ ಜನರಿಗೆ ಶಿವನ ಅನುಗ್ರಹ ಸಿಗಲಿ ಎನ್ನುವ ದೃಷ್ಟಿಯಿಂದ ಈ ದೇವಸ್ಥಾನದಲ್ಲಿ ಭಕ್ತರೇ ಲಿಂಗ ಸ್ಥಾಪನೆ ಮಾಡುವ ಮೂಲಕ ಶಿವನ ಅನುಗ್ರಹಕ್ಕೆ ಪಾತ್ರರಾಗಲು ಅನುಕೂಲ ಕಲ್ಪಿಸಿದ್ದಾರೆ.
