ಹಲವಾರು ಶತಮಾನಗಳ ಹಿಂದೆ ಪರಮೇಶ್ವರನು ಕೈಲಾಸದಿಂದ ಹೊರಟು, ಹೇಮಕೂಟ ಪರ್ವತದಿಂದ ಸುತ್ತುವರೆದ ತುಂಗಭದ್ರಾ ನದಿಯ ದಂಡೆಯು ತನ್ನ ತಪಸ್ಸಿಗೆ ಅತ್ಯಂತ ಸೂಕ್ತ ಸ್ಥಳವೆಂದು ಪರಿಗಣಿಸಿದನು. ಶಿವನು ಗಾಢ ತಪಸ್ಸಿನಲ್ಲಿ ನಿರತನಾಗಿದ್ದಾಗ ತಾರಾಕಸುರ ಎನ್ನುವ ರಾಕ್ಷಸನು ಭೂಮಿಯ ಮೇಲೆ ಇದ್ದ ಜನರನ್ನು ಹಿಂಸಿಸುತ್ತಿದ್ದನು, ಇದನ್ನು ಅರಿತ ದೇವತೆಗಳು ಬ್ರಹ್ಮನ ಮೊರೆಹೊಕ್ಕರು. ಬ್ರಹ್ಮನು ತಾರಕಸುರನನ್ನು ನಾಶಮಾಡಲು ಶಿವನೆ ಸೂಕ್ತ ಎಂದು ತಿಳಿಸಿದನು. ಆಗ ದೇವತೆಗಳು ಶಿವನ ತಪಸ್ಸನ್ನು ಭಂಗಮಾಡಲು ಮನ್ಮಥನನ್ನು ಪ್ರಚೋದಿಸಿ ಕಳುಹಿಸಿದರು. ತನ್ನ ತಪಸ್ಸಿಗೆ ಭಂಗ ತಂದ ಮನ್ಮಥನನ್ನು ಶಿವನು ಕೋಪದಿಂದ ಭಸ್ಮಗೊಳಿಸಿದನು. ಆದ್ದರಿಂದ ಶಿವನಿಗೆ ವಿರೂಪಾಕ್ಷ (ಉರಿಗಣ್ಣು ಹೊಂದಿದವನು) ಎನ್ನುವ ಹೆಸರು ಬಂದಿತು. ಬ್ರಹ್ಮನ ಮಗಳಾದ ಪಂಪಾಂಬಿಕೆ ಕೋಪಿಷ್ಠನಾದ ಶಿವನನ್ನು ಶಾಂತಗೋಳಿಸಿದಳು. ಋಷಿಮುನಿಗಳು ಶಿವ ಮತ್ತು ಪಂಪಾಂಬಿಕಾದೇವಿಯ ಮದುವೆ ನೇರೆವೇರಿಸಲು ಮುಂದಾದರು. ಶ್ರೀ ವಿರೂಪಾಕ್ಷೇಶ್ವರನನ್ನು ಶ್ರೀ ಪಂಪಾಪತಿ ಎಂತಲೂ ಕರೆಯುತ್ತಾರೆ. ಹಂಪೆಯನ್ನು ಪಂಪಾಪುರ, ವಿಜಯನಗರ, ವಿದ್ಯಾನಗರ ಎಂಬ ಹೆಸರುಗಳಿಂದ ಕರೆಯುತ್ತಾರೆ. ಹಂಪೆಯು ವಿಜಯನಗರ ಸಾಮ್ರಾಜ್ಯದ ರಾಜಧಾನಿಯಾಗಿತ್ತು. ಕಾಲಕ್ರಮೇಣ ಈ ರಾಜಧಾನಿಯು ಕೃಷ್ಣಾಪುರ, ನಾಗಲಾಪುರ, ತಿಮಲಪುರ, ವಿಠಲಾಪುರ ಇತ್ಯಾದಿ ಉಪಪಟ್ಟಣಗಳನ್ನು ಒಳಗೊಂಡು ಬೆಳೆಯಿತು. ಶ್ರೀ ವಿರೂಪಾಕ್ಷ ವಿಜಯ ನಗರದ ಅರಸರ ಆರಾಧ್ಯ ದೈವವಾಗಿತ್ತು ಮತ್ತು ವಿರೂಪಾಕ್ಷ ಅವರ ಲಾಂಛನವಾಯಿತು. ಈ ನಗರವನ್ನು 1336ರಲ್ಲಿ ಹರಿಹರ ಮತ್ತು ಬುಕ್ಕರಾಯ ಎಂಬ ಸಹೋದರರು ಸ್ಥಾಪಿಸಿದರು. ಅವರನ್ನು 1326-27 ರಲ್ಲಿ ದೆಹಲಿ ಸುಲ್ತಾನನಾದ ಮಹಮದ್ ಬಿನ್ ತೊಘಲಕ್ ಯುದ್ದ ಕೈದಿಗಳನ್ನಾಗಿ ಸೇರೆ ಹಿಡಿದಿದ್ದನು. ಹಕ್ಕ ಮತ್ತು ಬುಕ್ಕ ಮಾದರಿ ಯುದ್ದ ಕೈದಿಗಳಾಗಿದ್ದರು. ಆದ್ದರಿಂದ ದಕ್ಷಿಣಭಾಗದ ಯುದ್ದ ಕೈದಿಗಳು ದಂಗೆ ಎದ್ದಾಗ ಸುಲ್ತಾನನು ಈ ಸಹೋದರರನ್ನು ದಂಗೆ ಎದ್ದ ಕೈದಿಗಳನ್ನು ಸಮಾಧಾನಪಡಿಸಲು ಕಳುಹಿಸಿದನು. ಇವರು ದಂಗೆಯನ್ನು ಶಮನಗೊಳಿಸಿದ್ದಲ್ಲದೇ ಸ್ವತಂತ್ರವಾದ ಹಿಂದೂ ಸಾಮ್ರಾಜ್ಯವನ್ನು ಸ್ಥಾಪಿಸಿದರು. ವಿಜಯ ನಗರ ಸಾಮ್ರಾಜ್ಯವು ಅದ್ಬುತವಾಗಿ ವೈಭವಯುತವಾಗಿ ಬೆಳೆದು 1565ರ ತನಕ ಶತ್ರುಗಳ ದಾಳಿಯನ್ನು ಯಶಸ್ವಿಯಾಗಿ ಹಿಮ್ಮೆಟ್ಟಿಸಿತ್ತು. ಆದರೆ ಇದರ ನಂತರ ವಿಜಯನಗರ ಸಾಮ್ರಾಜ್ಯದ ಅಳಿಯ ರಾಮರಾಯನನ್ನು ರಕ್ಕಸ ತಂಗಡಗಿ ಯುದ್ಧದಲ್ಲಿ ಮುಸ್ಲಿಂ ದೊರೆಗಳ ಗುಂಪು ಸೋಲಿಸಿ ರಾಜಧಾನಿಯನ್ನು ಭಗ್ನಮಾಡಿತು. Lord Shiva set out from Kailash in search of suitable place for penance and identified the banks of the Thungabadra amidst the serene surroundings of the Hemakuta mountain as the most ideal one. Time passed by and while he was deep in meditation, Tarakasura a demon harassed the people upon the earth and thus Devas appealed Brahma to control him. Upon his advice that only Shiva was capable to destroy Tarakasura, they motivated Manmatha to come to Hemakuta but he was burnt down by Shiva as his penance was disrupted. He was thus called Virupaksha. In order to calm down shiva's temper, Pampambika, the daughter of Brahma, devoted herself totally in the service of the Lord. As Shiva and Shakti's combined benevolence was denied to the people, sages resolved to hold the marriage of Pampambika with Shiva and thus bring them back to this material world. Accordingly, the divine marriage was held in the August presence of all gods and goddesses, all divinities and all Risis. Hampi is also referred to a Virupakshapura, Vidyanagara and Vijayanagar. In course of time, this capital city developed into a sprawling metropolis with the establishment of suburbs of Krishnapura, Nagalapura, Tirumalapura and others. Lord Virupaksha became the patron deity of Vijayanagar rulers and they used the word "VIRUPAKSHA " as their insignia. The city was founded in 1336 by two brothers Harihara (also called Hakka) and Bukka who had been taken as prisoners of war by the Delhi Sultan, Mohammed-bin-Tuglak in 1326-1327, when the Chalukyan kingdom of Kampili near Hampi was overthrown. Harihara and Bukka seem to have been model prisoners, because when his southern provinces began to get rebellious, the sultan sent back the brothers to restore order. Restore order they did, and so successfully that they were soon able to set up an independent Hindu kingdom. The Vijayanagar Empire grew in strength and splendor and resisted all onslaughts till 1565 when the then Vijayanagar commander Rama Raya was defeated by a confederation of Muslim kings and the capital city was ransacked.
