Like the history of any other Thirumala Devasthanams, this temple is also has connections with the history of the Gowda Saraswatha Brahmins. About 10 families, who came to Kerala from Gomanthaka Desam, the place now known as Goa, holding their Kuladevathas (Idols for daily worship) were settled in Kochi in 1560 AD. Later 8 families among those were shifted to Ernakulam. In 1727, a community meeting held under the leadership of their Guru Shri Devaresa Prabhu and Priest Shri Damodarachari, decided to construct a Temple of their own for propitiating their Kuladevathas. In the same year they built Ernakulam Thirumala Devasvom Temple here and installed the Idols. The property of the temple was donated by Shri Cheranalloor Kartha, the Ruler of Kochi. This area later was known to be Panjabjapuram.
