The Guru of Cheraman Perumal at the time of his death, gave some suggestions to the King Cheraman Perumaal. A curse was following the Guru, as he might have to take one more birth, mostly in the form of a Dog. The Guru explained almost the features of the Dog and the nature of the spot, he might come again. The King was strictly impressed that the dog must not be allowed to take old and refused food which might perhaps be a reason for a life-cycle of Guru again. The Guru gave up his body. Later, after some years, Perumal found out a Dog on the spot and place, with the many exact symptoms. He brought up the animal with every belief and carefulness. One day, at the time Perumal was visitng the area, he saw the Dog beginning to take lower rate of food. Before the food reach it’s neck, the King killed it immediately with his sword. The place around, Parameshwaramangalam, where Lord Siva had his Mangalyam, was later known to be ‘Nayathode’. For a remorseful escape from Guruhathya papam, the King was constructing this Divine Kovil, Thirunayathode Kshethram. Eventually, as the presence of Vishnu splendor was manifested, the Guru Kovattadikal was enshrining the idle of Lord Vishnu. The result was, the King Perumal could come to his culmination and the consecration of Vishnu idol gave the Guru his own liberation. It is all that well believed legend. ചേരമാൻപെരുമാളിന്റെ ഗുരുനാഥൻ, തന്റെ അന്ത്യസമയത്ത് താനൊരു ശ്വാനനായി പുനർജനിക്കാനിടയുണ്ടെന്നും, പുനര്ജ്ജ നിക്കാനിടയുള്ള സ്ഥലത്തിന്റെh സവിശേഷതകളും മറ്റും പറഞ്ഞു കൊടുത്തതിനോടൊപ്പം, നിഷിദ്ധഭക്ഷണത്തിലൂടെ തനിക്ക് കർമ്മഫലം വീണ്ടുമനുഭവിക്കാതിരിക്കുവാൻ പെരുമാൾ ശ്രദ്ധിക്കണമെന്നും പറഞ്ഞു ദേഹം വെടിയുന്നു. പിന്നീട് പെരുമാൾ, ഗുരുനാഥൻ അടയാളപ്പെടുത്തിയ ലക്ഷണങ്ങളുള്ള നായയെ കണ്ടെത്തി ആദരപൂർവം പരിപാലിച്ചു. ഒരു ദിവസം തന്റെ ഗുരുനാഥന്റെ ജന്മസ്ഥലം സന്ദർശിച്ച പെരുമാൾ കൂടെയുണ്ടായിരുന്ന നായ ഉച്ചിഷ്ടം ഭക്ഷിക്കാനൊരുമ്പെടുന്നത് കാണാനിടയായി. ഉച്ചിഷ്ടം ഗളനാളത്തിൽ പ്രവേശിക്കും മുൻപ് അദ്ദേഹം ആ നായയെ വധിച്ചു . ഇതോടെ ഗുരു മോക്ഷപ്രാപ്‌തനായി. അങ്ങനെ ശ്രീപരമേശ്വരന്റെ മംഗലം കഴിഞ്ഞിടമായ പരമേശ്വരമംഗലം നായവെട്ടിത്തോടും കാലക്രമേണ നായത്തോടും ആയി മാറിയത്രെ. തുടർന്ന് ഗുരുഹത്യാ പാപപരിഹാരാർത്ഥം രാജാവ് പണികഴിപ്പിച്ച ക്ഷേത്രമാണ് ഇതെന്നാണ് വിശ്വാസം. തുടർന്ന് വിഷ്ണു സാനിധ്യം കൂടി ക്ഷേത്രപരിസരത്ത് കണ്ടതിനാൽ പ്രതിഷ്ഠാകർത്താവായ കോവട്ടടികൾ വിഷ്ണുപ്രതിഷ്ഠയും നടത്തി. ശിവപ്രതിഷ്ഠമൂലം പെരുമാളിനു പാപപരിഹാരം കിട്ടുകയും വിഷ്ണു പ്രതിഷ്ഠ ഗുരുദേവന് മോക്ഷദായകമാകുകയും ചെയ്തുവെന്നാണ് ഐതീഹ്യം.
