Sri Yoga Narasihma temple at Gorur is said to have been built in 1586 A.D. by Krishnappa Nayak, a Chieftain of Vijayanagar rulers. Earlier, Gorur was called as Gokarna Puri Kshetra. A few inscriptions have been unearthed in this village. According to an inscription, Sri Kailaseshwara temple said to have been built in 1166 A.D., is probably the most ancient temple of this place. As this temple is in Hoysala style of architecture, it can be inferred that this temple might have been built by a Hoysala ruler. Sri Yoga Narasihma temple is in Vijayanagar style of architecture. Therefore, Gorur has assumed historical significance. ಗೊರೂರಿನಲ್ಲಿರುವ ಶ್ರೀ ಯೋಗಾ ನರಸಿಂಹ ಸ್ವಾಮಿ ದೇವಾಲಯವು ವಿಜಯನಗರದರಸರ ಅಧೀನನಾಗಿದ್ದ ಕೃಷ್ಣಪ್ಪನಾಯಕನೆಂಬ ಪಾಳೇಗಾರನಿಂದ ನಿರ್ಮಿಸಲ್ಪಟ್ಟಿತೆಂದು ಮಾಹಿತಿ ಲಭಿಸಿದೆ. ಹಿಂದೆ ಗೊರೂರು ಗೋಕರ್ಣಪುರಿ ಕ್ಷೇತ್ರವೆಂದು ಕರೆಯಲ್ಪಡುತ್ತಿತ್ತು. ಗೊರೂರಿನಲ್ಲಿ ಕೆಲವು ಶಾಸನಗಳು ದೊರೆತಿವೆ. ಒಂದು ಶಾಸನದ ಪ್ರಕಾರ, ಕ್ರಿ.ಶ.1166ರಲ್ಲಿ ಓರ್ವ ಹೊಯ್ಸಳ ದೊರೆಯಿಂದ ನಿರ್ಮಿಸಲ್ಪಟ್ಟಿರಬಹುದೆಂದು ಹೇಳಲಾಗುವ ಶ್ರೀ ಕೈಲಾಸೇಶ್ವರ ದೇವಾಲಯವು ಅತ್ಯಂತ ಪ್ರಾಚೀನ ದೇಗುಲವೆಂದು ತಿಳಿದುಬರುತ್ತದೆ. ಶ್ರೀ ಯೋಗಾ ನರಸಿಂಹ ದೇವಾಲಯವು ವಿಜಯನಗರದ ಶಿಲ್ಪಕಲಾ ಶೈಲಿಯಲ್ಲಿ ನಿರ್ಮಿತವಾಗಿದೆ. ಈ ಎಲ್ಲ ಅಂಶಗಳಿಂದ ಗೊರೂರು ಐತಿಹಾಸಿಹ ಪ್ರಾಮುಖ್ಯತೆಯನ್ನು ಪಡೆದಿದೆ.

It is believed that a sage called Sri Gokarna Rishi was doing penance on the banks of Hemavati River here, Lord Narasihma appeared in front of him and asked him to consecrate a self-manifested idol of the Lord there. However, there is no evidence to show that the temple was built or the idol was consecrated by the sage. Till about four hundred years ago, this place was being called after the name of the sage as Gokarna Puri Kshetra. ಹೇಮಾವತಿ ನದಿಯ ತೀರದಲ್ಲಿರುವ, ಇಂದು ಗೊರೂರು ಎಂದು ಹೆಸರಾಗಿರುವ ಈ ಸ್ಥಳದಲ್ಲಿ ಹಿಂದೆ ಗೋಕರ್ಣ ಎಂಬ ಹೆಸರಿನ ಋಷಿಗಳೊಬ್ಬರು ತಪಸ್ಸನ್ನಾಚರಿಸಿದ್ದರೆಂದು ಹೇಳಲಾಗುತ್ತದೆ. ಆ ಋಷಿಗಳಿಗೆ ಶ್ರೀ ನರಸಿಂಹಸ್ವಾಮಿಯು ದರ್ಶನ ನೀಡಿ ಇದೇ ಸ್ಥಳದಲ್ಲಿ ತನ್ನ ಪ್ರತಿಮೆಯೊಂದನ್ನು ಪ್ರತಿಷ್ಠಾಪಿಸಬೇಕೆಂದು ಹೇಳಿದನು. ಆದರೆ ಮುನಿಗಳು ಶ್ರೀ ನರಸಿಂಹನ ವಿಗ್ರಹವನ್ನು ಪ್ರತಿಷ್ಠಾಪಿಸಿದ ಬಗೆಗಾಗಲಿ, ದೇವಾಲಯವನ್ನು ಕಟ್ಟಿಸಿದ ಬಗೆಗಾಗಲಿ ನಿಖರವಾದ ಮಾಹಿತಿಗಳು ದೊರೆತಿರುವುದಿಲ್ಲ. ಗೋಕರ್ಣ ಋಷಿಗಳು ಈ ಸ್ಥಳದಲ್ಲಿ ತಪಸ್ಸನ್ನಾಚರಿಸಿದ್ದರಿಂದ ಈ ಸ್ಥಳವು ಗೋಕರ್ಣಪುರಿ ಕ್ಷೇತ್ರವೆಂದು ಸುಮಾರು ನಾನ್ನೂರು ವರ್ಷಗಳಷ್ಟು ಹಿಂದಿನ ವರೆಗೂ ಕರೆಯಲ್ಪಡುತ್ತಿತ್ತೆಂದೂ ಪ್ರತೀತಿಯಿದೆ.

Sage Gokarna performed penance on the banks of Hemavati River about Lord Narasihma, who appeared in front of the sage on a rock in Yoga posture. It is believed that the idol of Sri Yoga Narasihma consecrated in this temple was carved from the same rock on which the Lord had appeared before the sage. Later, an ant hill grew on the Lord in due course of time. After a few years, two brothers called Dodda Narasaiah and Chikka Narasaiah arrived at the place from southern part of Karnataka. On reaching the then Gokarna Puri kshetra, they found the place suitable for taking rest. The next morning, they were surprised to see a cow milking on the anthill which had grown on the Lord. When they removed the ant hill, they were bewildered to see the idol of Lord Narasihma inside. They cleaned the surrounding with the help of local people and built the temple for Sri Yoga Narasihma Swamy. It is said that even now, their family members visit the temple frequently. Earlier, Gorur was known as Shata Rudra Yaga Puri. In the latter part of 16th century the temple was renovated and the place was named as Gorur. ಹಿಂದೆ ಶ್ರೀ ಗೋಕರ್ಣ ಋಷಿಗಳು ಹೇಮಾವತಿ ದಡದಲ್ಲಿ ಶ್ರೀ ನರಸಿಂಹನನ್ನು ಕುರಿತು ತಪವನ್ನಾಚರಿಸುತ್ತಿದ್ದ ಸಂದರ್ಭದಲ್ಲೊಮ್ಮೆ ಮುನಿವರ್ಯರ ಮುಂದಿದ್ದ ಬಂಡೆಗಲ್ಲಿನ ಮೇಲೆ ದರ್ಶನ ನೀಡಿದ್ದನೆಂದೂ, ದೇವಾಲಯದಲ್ಲಿ ಇಂದಿಗೂ ಪೂಜೆಗೊಳ್ಳುತ್ತಿರುವ ಶ್ರೀ ಯೋಗಾನರಸಿಂಹನ ವಿಗ್ರಹವನ್ನು ಅದೇ ಬಂಡೆಗಲ್ಲಿನಲ್ಲಿ ಕೊರೆಯಲಾಗಿರಬಹುದೆಂದೂ ಹೇಳಲಾಗುತ್ತದೆ. ಕಾಲಾನುಕ್ರಮದಲ್ಲಿ ಶ್ರೀ ನರಸಿಂಹನ ವಿಗ್ರಹದ ಮೇಲೆ ಹುತ್ತವು ಬೆಳೆದಿತ್ತು. ಹಲವು ವರ್ಷಗಳ ನಂತರ ದಕ್ಷಿಣ ಕರ್ನಾಟಕದಿಂದ ದೊಡ್ಡ ನರಸಯ್ಯ ಮತ್ತು ಚಿಕ್ಕ ನರಸಯ್ಯ ಎಂಬ ಸೋದರರಿಬ್ಬರು ಈ ಸ್ಥಳದಲ್ಲಿ ತಂಗಿದ್ದರು. ಮರುದಿನ ಬೆಳಿಗ್ಗೆ ಅವರು ನೋಡುತ್ತಿರುವಂತೆಯೇ ಹಸುವೊಂದು ಬಂದು ಹುತ್ತದ ಮೇಲೆ ಹಾಲನ್ನು ಸ್ರವಿಸಲಾರಂಭಿಸಿದುದ್ದನ್ನು ಕಂಡು ನರಸಯ್ಯ ಸೋದರರು ಚಕಿತರಾದರು. ನಂತರ ಆ ಹುತ್ತವನ್ನು ಕೆಡವಿದಾಗ ಅಲ್ಲಿ ಶ್ರೀ ಯೋಗಾನರಸಿಂಹನ ವಿಗ್ರಹವನ್ನು ನೋಡಿ ಸೋಜಿಗಗೊಂಡರು. ಅದೇ ಸ್ಥಳದಲ್ಲಿ ಶ್ರೀ ನರಸಿಂಹನ ವಿಗ್ರಹದ ಸುತ್ತಲೂ ದೇವಾಲಯವನ್ನು ಸ್ಥಳೀಯರ ನೆರವಿನೊಂದಿಗೆ ನಿರ್ಮಿಸಿದರೆಂದು ತಿಳಿದುಬರುತ್ತದೆ. ಇಂದಿಗೂ ಆ ಸೋದರರ ಕುಟುಂಬಸ್ಥರು ಈ ದೇವಾಲಯವನ್ನು ಸಂದರ್ಶಿಸುತ್ತಾರೆಂದು ಹೇಳಲಾಗುತ್ತದೆ. ಬಹಳ ಹಿಂದೆ ಈ ಸ್ಥಳವನ್ನು ಶತರುದ್ರಯಾಗಪುರಿಯೆಂದು ಕರೆಯಲಾಗುತ್ತಿತ್ತು. ಹದಿನಾರನೇ ಶತಮಾನದ ಉತ್ತರಾರ್ಧದ ಅವಧಿಯಲ್ಲಿ ಈ ಸ್ಥಳದಲ್ಲಿದ್ದ ಎಲ್ಲ ದೇವಾಲಯಗಳನ್ನು ನವೀಕರಿಸಲಾಯಿತು. ಅವುಗಳಲ್ಲಿ ಶ್ರೀ ಯೋಗಾನರಸಿಂಹನ ದೇವಾಲಯವೂ ಒಂದು. ಮುಂದಿನ ವರ್ಷಗಳಲ್ಲಿ ಈ ಸ್ಥಳವು ಗೊರೂರೆಂದು ಹೆಸರು ಪಡೆಯಿತು ಎಂದು ತಿಳಿದುಬರುತ್ತದೆ.
