Sri Kailas Ashram Mahasamsthan in Rarajeshwarinagar was founded by Sri Sivaratnapuri Swamiji, who was popular as Sri Tiruchi Swamigal, in 1960. It is said that Sri Sivapuribaba, the preceptor or Guru of Sri Tiruchi Swamiji, was living in Kathmandu. He told his disciple Sri Tiruchi Swamiji to go to southern part of the country and accomplish a divine task which was long overdue there. Before coming down to the south, Sri Tiruchi Swamiji went to Mount Kailas. During the course of an intense meditation on Mount Kailas, he had a vision of three Goddesses namely Sri Lakshmi, Sri Durga and Sri Saraswati and a celestial voice (Ashareera Vani) directed him (Sri Tiruchi Swamigal) to go to Karnataka. Accordingly, he came to Bengaluru via Bombay. On reaching Bengaluru, he took up the task of setting up Sri Rajarajeshwari Temple at a place, which was earlier known as Kalyananagari. Later the place came to be known as Kanchanahalli and Champakavana. It is said that the present location of the temple had been identified as solemn as it is in the south-western corner of a region that lies between two holy rivers namely Cauvery and Vrishabhavati.

ಇಂದು ಬೆಂಗಳೂರಿನ ಅತ್ಯಂತ ಅಭಿವೃದ್ಧಿಹೊಂದಿದ ಪ್ರದೇಶಗಳಲ್ಲೊಂದಾಗಿರುವ ರಾಜರಾಜೇಶ್ವರಿನಗರದಲ್ಲಿರುವ ಶ್ರೀ ಕೈಲಾಸ ಆಶ್ರಮ ಮಹಾಸಂಸ್ಥಾನವನ್ನು 1960ರಲ್ಲಿ ಶ್ರೀ ತಿರುಚಿಸ್ವಾಮಿಗಳೆಂದು ಪ್ರಖ್ಯಾತರಾಗಿದ್ದ ಶ್ರೀ ಶಿವರತ್ನಪುರಿಸ್ವಾಮಿಗಳು ಸ್ಥಾಪಿಸಿದರೆಂದು ಹೇಳಲಾಗುತ್ತದೆ. ಹಿಂದೆ ಶ್ರೀ ತಿರುಚಿಸ್ವಾಮಿಗಳ ಗುರುಗಳಾಗಿದ್ದ ಶ್ರೀ ಶಿವಪುರಿ ಬಾಬಾರವರು ಖಟ್ಮಂಡುವಿನಲ್ಲಿ ವಾಸಿಸುತ್ತಿದ್ದರು. ಒಮ್ಮೆ ಶ್ರೀ ಶಿವಪುರಿಸ್ವಾಮಿಗಳು ತಮ್ಮ ಶಿಷ್ಯರಾಗಿದ್ದ ಶ್ರೀ ತಿರುಚಿಸ್ವಾಮಿಗಳಿಗೆ ದಕ್ಷಿಣಭಾರತಕ್ಕೆ ಹೋಗಿ ಅಲ್ಲಿ ಬಹುಕಾಲದಿಂದ ಅಪೂರ್ಣವಾಗುಳಿದಿರುವ ಪುಣ್ಯಕಾರ್ಯವೊಂದನ್ನು ಪೂರ್ಣಗೊಳಿಸಬೇಕೆಂದು ಆದೇಶಿಸಿದರು. ಗುರುಗಳ ಆದೇಶವನ್ನು ಪಾಲಿಸುವ ಮುಂಚೆ ಶ್ರೀ ತಿರುಚಿಸ್ವಾಮಿಗಳು ಕೈಲಾಸಪರ್ವತದಲ್ಲಿ ಧ್ಯಾನಾಸಕ್ತರಾಗಿ ಕುಳಿತಿದ್ದಾಗ ಅವರ ಮುಂದೆ ತ್ರಿದೇವಿಯರಾದ ಶ್ರೀ ಲಕ್ಷ್ಮಿ, ಶ್ರೀ ದುರ್ಗೆ ಹಾಗೂ ಶ್ರೀ ಸರಸ್ವತೀ ದೇವಿಯರು ದಿವ್ಯದರ್ಶನವನ್ನಿತ್ತು, ಅಶರೀರವಾಣಿಯೊಂದರ ಮೂಲಕ ಕರ್ನಾಟಕಕ್ಕೆ ಪ್ರಯಾಣಿಸಬೇಕೆಂದು ನಿರ್ದೇಶಿಸಿದರೆಂದು ಹೇಳಲಾಗುತ್ತದೆ. ಹಾಗಾಗಿ, ಶ್ರೀ ತಿರುಚಿಸ್ವಾಮಿಗಳು ಮುಂಬಯಿಯ ಮೂಲಕ ಪ್ರಯಾಣಿಸಿ ಬೆಂಗಳೂರನ್ನು ತಲುಪಿದರು. ಬಹು ಕಾಲದ ಹಿಂದೆ ಕಾಂಚನಹಳ್ಳಿ ಮತ್ತು ಚಂಪಕವನವೆಂದು ಖ್ಯಾತಿಹೊಂದಿದ್ದ ಈಗಿನ ರಾಜರಾಜೇಶ್ವರಿನಗರ ಪ್ರದೇಶವನ್ನು ಪುಣ್ಯಭೂಮಿಯೆಂದು ಮನಗಂಡ ಶ್ರೀ ತಿರುಚಿಸ್ವಾಮಿಗಳು ಅಲ್ಲಿಯೇ ಶ್ರೀ ಕೈಲಾಸ ಆಶ್ರಮ ಮಹಾಸಂಸ್ಥಾನವನ್ನು ಸ್ಥಾಪಿಸಲು ನಿರ್ಧರಿಸಿದರು. ಶ್ರೀಗಳು ಈ ಸ್ಥಳವನ್ನು ಪುಣ್ಯಭೂಮಿಯೆಂದು ನಿರ್ಧರಿಸಲು ಕಾರಣವೇನೆಂದರೆ ಈ ಸ್ಥಳವು ಎರಡು ಪವಿತ್ರ ನದಿಗಳಾದ ಕಾವೇರಿ ಹಾಗೂ ವೃಷಭಾವತಿಗಳ ಮಧ್ಯದಲ್ಲಿದೆ.
