Sri Yoga Narasihma temple is at Gorur in Hassan district. Gorur is a part of Arkalgud taluk and about 20 km away from district headquarter Hassan. About 400 years ago, this village was known as Gokarnapuri Kshetra. As a community called Goravas settled down in this place in about 16th century A.D., the place came to be called as Goravas’ Ooru and later it became Gorur. This fact can be inferred from a popular folklore of this village.

Sri Yoga Narasihma temple is said to have been built in 1586 by a Chieftain named Krishnappa Nayak of Vijayanagar rulers. The idol of presiding deity was covered by an ant hill. It was cleared and a tiny shrine was built by Krishnappa Nayak, according to sources. However, the oldest temple in this village dedicated to Sri Kailaseshwar was built in 1166 A.D. by a Hoysala king, according to an inscription.

A special feature of this temple is that the idol of Sri Yoga Narasihma, which is said to be self-manifested, is in Yoga Mudra and facing the west. The temple is adorned with an exquisitely sculpted tower above the main entrance. Sri Yoga Narasihma temple is on the banks of Hemavati River, a tributary of the Kaveri. It is believed that the presiding deity has been bestowing upon the devotees peace and prosperity, besides relieving them from all problems.

Sri Narasihma Jayanti is celebrated on every Vaishakha Shukla Chaturdashi Day on a grand scale in this temple. A nine-day extravaganza is witnessed here as part of the car festival to mark the Rathasaptami festival on every Magha Shukla Saptami day.

ಶ್ರೀ ಯೋಗಾ ನರಸಿಂಹ ದೇವಸ್ಥಾನವು ಹಾಸನ ಜಿಲ್ಲೆಯ ಗೊರೂರಿನಲ್ಲಿದೆ. ಅರಕಲಗೂಡು ತಾಲುಕಿನಲ್ಲಿರುವ ಗೊರೂರು ಜಿಲ್ಲಾಕೇಂದ್ರ ಹಾಸನದಿಂದ ಸುಮಾರು 20 ಕಿ.ಮೀ. ದೂರದಲ್ಲಿದೆ. ಗೊರೂರು ಸುಮಾರು 400 ವರ್ಷಗಳ ಹಿಂದೆ ಗೋಕರ್ಣಪುರಿ ಕ್ಷೇತ್ರವೆಂದು ಕರೆಯಲ್ಪಡುತ್ತಿತ್ತು. ಸುಮಾರು ಹದಿನಾರನೇ ಶತಮಾನದಲ್ಲಿ ಗೊರವರ ಜನಾಂಗದವರು ಇಲ್ಲಿ ನೆಲೆಯೂರಿದ್ದರೆಂದೂ ಆದ್ದರಿಂದಲೇ ಈ ಸ್ಥಳವು ಗೊರವರ ಊರು ಎಂದು ಕರೆಯಲ್ಪಡುತ್ತಾ ಕಾಲಾನುಕ್ರಮದಲ್ಲಿ ಗೊರೂರು ಎಂಬ ಹೆಸರು ಪಡೆಯಿತೆಂದು ಇಲ್ಲಿ ಪ್ರಚಲಿತವಿರುವ ಜಾನಪದ ಗೀತೆಯೊಂದರಿಂದ ಊಹಿಸಬಹುದಾಗಿದೆ.

ಶ್ರೀ ಯೋಗಾನರಸಿಂಹ ದೇವಾಲಯವನ್ನು ಕ್ರಿ.ಶ. 1586ರಲ್ಲಿ ವಿಜಯನಗರದ ಅರಸರ ಪಾಳೇಗಾರನಾಗಿದ್ದ ಕೃಷ್ಣಪ್ಪನಾಯಕನೆಂಬುವನು ನಿರ್ಮಿಸಿದನು. ಶ್ರೀ ನರಸಿಂಹನ ವಿಗ್ರಹವು ಹುತ್ತದಲ್ಲಿತ್ತೆಂದೂ, ಅದನ್ನು ತೆಗೆಸಿ ಪುಟ್ಟ ಗುಡಿಯೊಂದನ್ನು ಕೃಷ್ಣಪ್ಪನಾಯಕನು ಕಟ್ಟಿಸಿದನೇಂದೂ ತಿಳಿದುಬರುತ್ತದೆ. ಅತ್ಯಂತ ಪ್ರಾಚೀನ ದೇವಾಲಯವೆಂದು ಗುರುತಿಸಲ್ಪಡುವ ಶ್ರೀ ಕೈಲಾಸೇಶ್ವರ ದೇವಸ್ಥಾನವು ಈ ಗೊರೂರಿನಲ್ಲಿದೆ. ಈ ದೇವಾಲಯವನ್ನು ಹೊಯ್ಸಳ ರಾಜನೊಬ್ಬನು 1166ರಲ್ಲಿ ನಿರ್ಮಿಸಿದನೆಂದು ಇಲ್ಲಿ ದೊರೆತಿರುವ ಶಾಸನದಿಂದ ಸಿದ್ಧವಾಗುತ್ತದೆ.
ಶ್ರೀ ಯೋಗಾನರಸಿಂಹ ದೇವಾಲಯದ ವೈಶಿಷ್ಟ್ಯವೇನೆಂದರೆ, ಇಲ್ಲಿ ಪ್ರತಿಷ್ಠಾಪಿಸಲ್ಪಟ್ಟಿರುವ ಶ್ರೀ ನರಸಿಂಹ ದೇವರ ಮೂರ್ತಿಯು ಪಶ್ಚಿಮಾಭಿಮುಖವಾಗಿದ್ದು ಯೋಗಮುದ್ರೆಯಲ್ಲಿದ್ದಾನೆ. ಈ ವಿಗ್ರಹವು ಸ್ವಯಂ ಪ್ರಕಾಶಿತವೆಂದು ನಂಬಲಾಗಿದೆ. ದೇವಾಲಯದ ಮಹಾದ್ವಾರದ ಮೇಲೆ ಸುಂದರವಾಗಿ ಚಿತ್ರಿಸಲ್ಪಟ್ಟ ಗೋಪುರವಿದೆ. ಶ್ರೀ ಯೋಗಾನರಸಿಂಹ ದೇವಾಲಯವು ಕಾವೇರಿಯ ಉಪನದಿಯಾಗಿರುವ ಹೇಮಾವತಿ ನದಿಯ ತೀರದಲ್ಲಿದೆ. ಈ ದೇವಾಲಯಕ್ಕೆ ಆಗಮಿಸುವ ಭಕ್ತಾದಿಗಳ ಕಷ್ಟಕಾರ್ಪಣ್ಯಗಳನ್ನು ನಿವಾರಿಸಿ ಸುಖ, ಸಂತೋಷ, ಸಮೃದ್ಧಿಗಳನ್ನು ಶ್ರೀ ಯೋಗಾ ನರಸಿಂಹಸ್ವಾಮಿಯು ನೀಡುತ್ತಿರುವನೆಂದು ನಂಬಿಕೆಯಿದೆ.

ಈ ದೇವಾಲಯದಲ್ಲಿ ಶ್ರೀ ನರಸಿಂಹ ಜಯಂತಿಯನ್ನು ಪ್ರತಿ ವೈಶಾಖ ಶುಕ್ಲ ಚತುರ್ದಶಿಯಂದು ಅತ್ಯಂತ ವಿಜೃಂಭಣೆಯಿಂದ ಆಚರಿಸಲಾಗುತ್ತದೆ. ಮಾಘ ಶುಕ್ಲ ಸಪ್ತಮಿಯಿಂದ ರಥಸಪ್ತಮೀ ಹಬ್ಬದ ಸಂದರ್ಭದಲ್ಲಿ ಶ್ರೀ ಯೋಗಾನರಸಿಂಹ ಸ್ವಾಮಿಯ ರಥೋತ್ಸವವನ್ನು ಅತ್ಯಂತ ವೈಭವದಿಂದ ನೆರವೇರಿಸಲಾಗುತ್ತದೆ. ಒಂಭತ್ತು ದಿನಗಳ ಕಾಲ ವಿವಿಧ ಕಾರ್ಯಕ್ರಮಗಳು ನಡೆಯುತ್ತವೆ. ಈ ದೇವಾಲಯದಲ್ಲಿ ವೈಖಾನಸ ಆಗಮ ಶಾಸ್ತ್ರದ ಪದ್ಧತಿಯಂತೆ ಪೂಜಾ ಕೈಂಕರ್ಯಗಳು ನಡೆಯುತ್ತದೆ.
