Guwahati or Pragjyotishpura of ancient times is the largest city of Assam and a major riverine port city situated on the South Bank of the Brahmaputra River. It was the capital of the ancient state of Kamarupa under the Varman and Pala dynasties. The Kamakhya Temple is dedicated to the mother goddess Kamakhya. It is one of the oldest of the 51 Shakti Pithas. It is an important pilgrimage destination for general Hindu devotees and especially for Tantric worshipers.
