‘Dattatreya Kshetra’ is situated near the confluence of Bheema and Amraja Rivers. The present temple said to be at least 650 years old. Initially, it was established as ‘Nirguna Math’ (sacred place of the renounced), by Shree Bhaskara Bhatta. This place was dedicated to the saint Sri Nrusimha Saraswati believed to be an incarnation of Dattatreya. His ‘Padukas’ (sacred footwear) have been installed here and Pujas and other celebrations take place through-out the day.

Lord Dattatreya is an Avatar (incarnation) of the divine trinity of Hindu gods – Brahma, Vishnu and Shiva. The trinity had granted a boon that, Sage Atri would beget a son with the qualities of all the three put together. Dattatreya was born to the couple Atri and Anasuya.

It is said, that Dattatreya incarnated several times to care and protect his followers and devotees. Sreepada Sri Vallabha and Sri Nrusimha Saraswati are two such Avatars. As, Nrusimha Saraswati, he promised the devotees that he would forever be residing in the Kshetra of Ganagapura and bless them. This has been mentioned in the sacred text of “Sri Guru Charitre”.

Audumbara (A ficus tree) is offered worship in this Kshetra and signifying the presence of Lord Dattatreya. ‘Bhikshatan’ is another ritual followed in this Kshetra followed by devotees who visit at least five houses in the village, as Sri Nrusimha Saraswati  promised that he would follow this routine every day in this Kshetra.
