Muhurtas find a mention in the Brahmanas which form a part of the Vedic Scriptures. In the Brāhmaṇas, muhurta denotes a division of time: 1/30 of a day, or a period of 48 minutes. Further each muhurta is further divided into 30 Kalaa, Each kalaa is further divided into 30 Kaasṭhaa. The etymology of Muhurta is explained here for the benefit of readers.
It breaks the word Muhurta into two parts, “muhu” (moment/immediate) and “ṛta” (order). This descriptive term has been accordingly created in Ṛigveda III.33.5. Ṛta refers to the natural, yearly order of the seasons, so that the term muhurta refers to the daily reflection of these.
It is stated in Manusmṛiti that 18 nimeṣhas (blinking of the eye) are 1 Kaaṣṭhaa, 30 such Kaaṣṭhaas are 1 Kalaa, 30 Kalaas are one Muhurta, and 30 Muhurtas are one day and night mentioned as Ahoratra. Muhurtas are recommended by the Vedic scriptures when performing rituals and other ceremonies. Astrologers are consulted to calculate a moment for the wedding so that any possible divinely-sourced problems can be averted.
