Sri Durga Namaskar Puja
Sri Durga Namaskar Puja or worship has been an age old practice prescribed in Shakteya Principle. This is also called Bhagavati Seva in Southern India.
Goddess Durga symbolizes the divine forces (positive energy) known as divine shakti that is used against the negative forces of evil and wickedness. She protects her followers from evil dark negative forces. It is believed that Goddess Durga is the combined form of powers of Goddesses Lakshmi, Kali and Saraswati.
The word Durga (दुर्गा) literally means “Impassable, Invincible and Unassailable”.
Avatar of Goddess Durga happened due to the combined efforts of Hari, Hara and Brahma as per Puranas. There are plenty of methods prescribed in the Scriptures to please Sri Durga Devi for achieving the desire. A brief description about the form of Durga is mentioned below:
- Chakra in her hand symbolizes Dharma (duty/righteousness)
- Conch in her hand symbolizes happiness
- Sword in her hand symbolizes eradication of vices
- Bow and arrow in her hand symbolizes character
- Lotus Flower in her hand symbolizes detachment
- Club in her hand symbolizes devotion and surrender
- Trishul in her hand symbolizes courage
- Abhaya Mudra symbolizes forgiveness and blessings
Durga is depicted as riding a lion or a tiger. A tiger symbolizes unlimited power. Durga riding a tiger indicates that she is in complete control of the unlimited power and uses it to protect virtue and destroy evil.
The lion is a symbol of uncontrolled animal nature (such as anger, arrogance, selfishness, greed, jealousy, desire to harm others etc.). Durga is depicted riding a lion, reminding us to control these animal instincts in us.
She is usually shown wearing a red sari. “Colour Red” symbolizes action and the red clothes signify that she destroys evil, protecting mankind from pain and suffering.
Sri Durgadeepa Namaskara Puja or Bhagavati Seva is one of the paddhati being practiced among the many. Durga Namaskar is practiced in many different time tenures. Some devout followers of the goddess perform a twelve day Durgadeepa Namaskara Puja. Other shorter versions include Nine day Puja, Seven Day puja, Five day Puja, Three Day Puja and even One Day affair.
Durga Namaskar Puja is more popular as Bhagavati Seva in the Southern parts of India like Karnataka, Kerala, Tamil Nadu, Andhra Pradesh and Telangana.
When is Durgadeepa Namaskar Puja performed?

General Procedure of Durga Deep Namaskar:
As the name indicates, the general practice is to light a lamp with five wicks and place it in the centre of a large Rangavalli (Rangoli) drawn in a clean and hygienic courtyard. Devi Yantra is also placed by some practitioners. Flowers are used for decorating Deepam (Lamp). Devi Stotrams like Durga Saptashati Parayan, Lalita Sahasranamam, Lalita Trishati and many others are chanted. Namaskarams are performed as per Sankalpam. Some even perform Japam.
Special foods are prepared and offered as Nivedan or Bhog. Gudannam is one of the important food offering. This is prepared using rice, jaggary, ghee along with coconut, dry fruits and elaichi. Food is offered to the needy as Naivedyam or Prashad. Some even donate cloth.
Arati (waving of Lamps) are performed by married women to Durga Deepam in reverence.
