The Prathishta here is the self-manifested Devi, discovered and enshrined by Lord Parasurama 1200 years ago. According to the legend, once a woman accidently rubbed a rock with her sickle while cutting grass and the rock started to bleed. Lord Parasurama identified the presence of goddess on that rock from this incident and enshrined Goddess Saraswathy here. And, it is believed that it was on the Pooyam star date in the month of Midhunam. 1200 വർഷത്തിലധികം പഴക്കമുള്ള ഈ ക്ഷേത്രത്തിലെ പ്രതിഷ്ഠ പരശുരാമൻ കണ്ടെത്തിയ സ്വയംഭൂവായ ദേവിയാണ്. പണ്ടൊരിക്കൽ ഒരു സ്ത്രീ പുല്ലരിഞ്ഞുകൊണ്ടിരുന്നപ്പോൾ അവരുടെ അരിവാൾ ഒരു കല്ലിൽ തട്ടുകയും അതിൽ നിന്നും രക്തം പൊടിയുകയും ചെയ്തുവെന്നും ഇതേതുടർന്ന് ദേവീസാന്നിധ്യം മനസ്സിലാക്കി പരശുരാമൻ സരസ്വതീപ്രതിഷ്ഠ ചെയ്തുവെന്നുമാണ് ക്ഷേത്രത്തിനു പിന്നിലുള്ള ഐതീഹ്യം. മിഥുനമാസത്തിലെ പൂയ്യം നാളിലാണ് പരശുരാമൻ ഇവിടെ ദേവീചൈതന്യം കണ്ടെത്തിയതെന്നാണു വിശ്വാസം.
