As it is mentioned in Ramayana, after abandoning Sita Devi, Sri Rama moved to the Southern part from Ayodhya. It took him to Kondadu, a place of hills and mountains. Fancied upon the beautitude of the nature around, Rama was deciding to stay over here. The other three brothers starting with the venture, to find out Sri Rama, somehow were reaching here. But as Sri Rama refused to go back to Ayodhya, the other three brothers began to stay over here together with Sri Rama. It may all be a legendary here, as the history gives a different picture. Paravoor is a prominent place nearby. A Brahmin group which was ill-pleased with the King of Kochi regency was coming together with a plan to get off the place Paravoor itself. They took the idol of Sri Rama, reached Kondadu. Later, 3 families from the group began with pujas and offering ceremonies. A temple was built herein by the help of Namboothiri families, named Mundathanam, Kunnuru and Karanattu. By the coming of the temple, the place was known to be Ramapuram. Later some other families of the group consecrated their worshiping lords Bharatha, Lakshmana and Shathrughna in the locales around. രാമായണ കഥയിൽ പറയുന്നതുപോലെ സീതാദേവിയെ പരിത്യജിക്കേണ്ടിവന്ന ശ്രീരാമൻ, സീതാവിരഹത്താല്‍ ദുഖിതനായി അയോദ്ധ്യയിൽ നിന്ന്‍ തിരോധാനം ചെയ്തു. ലക്ഷ്യമില്ലാത്ത ആ യാത്രയില്‍ അദ്ദേഹം ദക്ഷിണ ദേശത്തുള്ള കൊണ്ടാട് (മലകളുടെ നാട്) എന്നറിയപ്പെട്ടിരുന്ന ഈ പ്രദേശത്തു വരികയും പ്രകൃതി രമണീയമായ ഈ പ്രദേശം അത്യധികം ഇഷ്ടപ്പെട്ടതിനാൽ ഇവിടുത്തെ വനാന്തരീക്ഷത്തിൽ പാർപ്പാക്കുകയും ചെയ്തു. ഇതിനിടെ ജ്യേഷ്ഠനെ അന്വേഷിച്ചു അയോധ്യയിൽ നിന്നും പുറപ്പെട്ട സഹോദരന്മാരും ഈ പ്രദേശത്തു വന്നു ചേരുകയും, തിരിച്ചുപോകുവാൻ ജ്യേഷ്ഠനെ നിർബ്ബന്ധിച്ചെങ്കിലും മടക്കയാത്രയ്ക്ക് തയ്യാറാകാതിരുന്ന ശ്രീരാമദേവനൊപ്പം അവരും ഈ പ്രദേശത്തു വാസമാക്കുകയും ചെയ്തുവെന്നുമാണ് വിശ്വാസം. ഐതിഹ്യപരമായുള്ള ഒരു വിശ്വാസം ഇതാണെങ്കിലും, മറ്റൊരു ചരിത്ര ബന്ധിയായ വിശ്വാസമുള്ളത്‌ ഇങ്ങനെയാണ്. ഏകദേശം ആയിരം വര്ഷിങ്ങള്ക്ക്് മുമ്പ് പൂർവകാല കൊച്ചി രാജവംശത്തിൻറെ ഭാഗമായിരുന്ന പറവൂർ ദേശത്തുനിന്നും രാജാവിന്റെ അപ്രീതിക്ക് പാത്രങ്ങളായ ഒരു ബ്രാഹ്മണ സംഘം അവരുടെ ആരാധനാവിഗ്രഹമായിരുന്ന ശ്രീരാമവിഗ്രഹവുമായി ഇവിടെ വന്ന്‍ താമസമാക്കി. ഈ സംഘത്തില്‍ പെട്ട മൂന്ന്‍ ബ്രാഹ്മണ കുടുംബങ്ങള്‍ തങ്ങളുടെ പരദേവതയായ ശ്രീരാമസ്വാമിയെ പ്രതിഷ്ഠിച്ച് പൂജാ കര്മാങ്ങള്‍ ആരംഭിച്ചു. മുണ്ടത്താനം എന്ന്‍ പേരുള്ള അമനകര നമ്പൂതിരി, കീഴാക്കള്‍ ഇളം തുരുത്തി എന്ന കുന്നുരു നമ്പൂതിരി, കാരനാട്ട് നമ്പൂതിരി എന്നിവര്‍ ക്ഷേത്രം നിര്മ്മി ക്കുകയും സ്വത്തുക്കള്‍ ദാനം ചെയ്യുകയും ചെയ്തു. ഈ ക്ഷേത്ര ഉത്ഭവത്തോടെ കൊണ്ടനാട് എന്ന സ്ഥലം രാമപുരം എന്ന പേരില്‍ അറിയപ്പെടുവാനും തുടങ്ങി. പിന്നീട് ഈ സംഘത്തില്‍ പെട്ട മറ്റ് ചില കുടുംബക്കാരും അവരവരുടെ ഉപാസനാ മൂര്ത്തി കളായ ഭരത, ലക്ഷ്മണ, ശത്രുഘ്നന്മാരെ സമീപ പ്രദേശങ്ങളില്‍ പ്രതിഷ്ടിക്കുകയും ചെയ്തു.
