The Santhana Gopalam story appearing in Mahabhagawatham has bright full routes in the history of this invocation centre. A Brahmin who had been staying atDwaraka lost his 10 Kids unexpectly and untimely. Arjuna having been aghasted of seeing the high grief of the Brahmin family promised him, his children would be given back. Arjuna reached Vikuntam straight and acquired the blessings of Lord Krishna. Lord Krishna gave Arjuna 2 salagrams as a gift too. One Salagrama, Arjuna was consecrating here at Muthukulangara and the other he installed at Poonithura (the place wherein Sri Poornathrayeesha Temple positions now). With the many supporting evidences, these 2 temples are believed and witnessing to be Mahakshethrams enshrined by unique versatile Arjuna. He, after the ceremonial Prathishta, at Muthukulangara, took his Bow from the quiver and a pond he was creating. The water from the pond he took for Abhishekam purposes everything. The place around the temple was later known to be Muthukulangara. It is strongly believed, the Brahmins at present in Puliyannur Mana as the owners and Thanthriks of this temple are the continuities and traditions of the Brahmajnanees appeared in the Santhana Gopalam Story. ശ്രീമദ് മഹാഭാഗവതത്തിലെ സന്താനഗോപാല കഥയുമായി ബന്ധമുള്ള ഊഷ്മളമായൊരു ചരിത്രമാണു ഈ ക്ഷേത്രത്തിൻറെ പിന്നിലുള്ളത്. ദ്വാരകയിൽ വസിച്ചിരുന്ന ഒരു ബ്രാഹ്മണനു തനിക്കുണ്ടായ പത്തു മക്കളേയും അകാലത്തിൽ നഷ്ടപ്പെട്ടപ്പോൾ, അദ്ദേഹത്തിൻറെ തീഷ്ണമായ ദുഃഖം കണ്ടു ആ സന്താനങ്ങളെയെല്ലാം തിരിച്ചു നൽകാമെന്നു ഭഗവൽ നാമത്തിൽ അർജ്ജുനൻ വാക്കു കൊടുക്കുകയുണ്ടായി. അതു നേടിയെടുക്കുവാനായി സാക്ഷാൽ വൈകുണ്ഠത്തിലെത്തി, ശ്രീകൃഷ്ണ ഭഗവാൻറെ വരം സമ്പാദിച്ചെടുത്ത ശേഷം അവിടെനിന്നും തിരികെ മടങ്ങവേ, ശ്രീകൃഷ്ണ ദേവൻ രണ്ടു സാളഗ്രാമങ്ങൾ പ്രതിഷ്ഠക്കായി നൽകുകയും, അതിലൊന്ന് അർജ്ജുനൻ ഇവിടെത്തി പ്രതിഷ്ഠിക്കുകയും മറ്റൊന്ന്, അധികം ദൂരെയല്ലാതെയുള്ള "പൂണിത്തുറയിലും" (ഇന്നത്തെ ശ്രീപൂർണത്രയീശ ക്ഷേത്രമിരിക്കുന്ന സ്ഥലം) പ്രതിഷ്ഠിക്കുകയുണ്ടായി. ഉപോൽബലകമായ ഈ തെളിവുകളോടെ, രണ്ടു ക്ഷേത്രങ്ങളും അർജ്ജുനദേവനാൽ പ്രതിഷ്ഠ ചെയ്യപ്പെട്ട രണ്ടു മഹാ ക്ഷേത്രങ്ങളായി ഐതിഹ്യം സാക്ഷ്യപ്പെടുത്തുന്നുണ്ട്. ഇവിടുത്തെ പ്രതിഷ്ഠക്കു ശേഷം, തൻറെ ആവനാഴിക്കൊപ്പമുള്ള വില്ലെടുത്തു അർജ്ജുനൻ സമീപത്തു തന്നെ ഒരു കുളം കുഴിക്കുകയും ആ ജലം കൊണ്ടു അഭിഷേകം നടത്തുകയും ചെയ്തു. ആ കുളം നിർമ്മിക്കപ്പെട്ട സ്ഥലത്തിൻറെ കരയാണ് പിന്നീടു "മുതുകുളങ്ങരയായി" പരിണമിച്ചതു്. സന്താന ഗോപാല കഥയിലെ ബ്രാഹ്മണ കുടുംബത്തിൻറെ പരമ്പരയിൽ പെട്ടവരാണ് ഈ ക്ഷേത്ര ഉടമസ്ഥരും തന്ത്രികളുമായ പുലിയന്നൂർ മനക്കാർ എന്നും വിശ്വസിക്കപ്പെടുന്നുണ്ട്.
