The history of the temple is dated back to around 1000 years. The inscriptions found inside the temple premises reveals that Kaarasura, devotee of lord Shiva has consecrated the Idol of Lord “Sri Mahalingeshwara” and it is the only deity in the temple premises. Since, the temple does not houses any other dieties, such as Ganapati and Nandi, it is compared equivalent to Kashi Vishwanatha {Varanasi}. It is believed that, this belief is very prominent among devotees visiting this temple. The Theertha Mantapa which was constructed in the temple outeryard by the sons of Late Sri. Jalajaakshi Raghavendra Achar, in honour of “Sri Sri Sudheendra Tirtha”, sage of Sri Puthige Matha. The present pontiff of Sri Puthige Matha “Sri Sri Sugunendra Tirtha” dedicated the Theertha Mantapa to Lord “Sri Mahalingeshwara”, the main deity of this temple. ಶ್ರೀ ಮಹಾಲಿಂಗೇಶ್ವರ ಸ್ವಾಮೀ ದೇವಸ್ಥಾನವು ಒಂದು ಸಾವಿರ ವರ್ಷಗಳ ಪುರಾತನ ದೇವಸ್ಥಾನವಾಗಿದ್ದು, ಕರಾಸುರನೆಂಬ ಶಿವ ಭಕ್ತನು ಇದನ್ನು ಪ್ರತಿಷ್ಠಾಪಿಸಿದನು ಎಂಬ ಉಲ್ಲೇಖವನ್ನು ಈ ದೇವಾಲಯದ ಒಳಾಂಗಣದಲ್ಲಿ ಕಾಣಬಹುದಾಗಿದೆ. ಈ ದೇವಸ್ಥಾನದಲ್ಲಿ ನಂದಿ ಹಾಗೂ ಗಣಪತಿ ವಿಗ್ರಹಗಳಿಲ್ಲದ ಕಾರಣ ಈ ಗುಡಿಯನ್ನು ಕಾಶೀ ತುಲ್ಯ (ಸಮಾನ) ವೆಂದೇ ಬಹಳ ಹಿಂದಿನಿಂದಲೂ ಕರೆಯುವುದು ವಾಡಿಕೆ. ಕೆಲವು ವರ್ಷಗಳ ಹಿಂದೆ, ಇಲ್ಲಿನ ತೀರ್ಥಮಂಟಪದ ಶಿಲಾಮಯ ವೇದಿಕೆಯನ್ನು ಭಕ್ತರೊಬ್ಬರು ದೇವರಿಗೆ ಸಮರ್ಪಿಸಿದರು, ಇದರ ಕುರುಹಾಗಿ ಶಿಲಾ ಮಂಟಪದಲ್ಲಿ ದಿ|| ಜಲಜಾಕ್ಷಿ ರಾಘವೇಂದ್ರಾಚಾರ್ಯರ ಮಕ್ಕಳು ಶ್ರೀ ಪುತ್ತಿಗೆ ಮಠದ ಶತಾಯುಷಿಗಳು ಪರಮಪೂಜ್ಯ ಶ್ರೀ ಶ್ರೀ ಸುಧೀಂದ್ರ ತೀರ್ಥ ಶ್ರೀಪಾದರ ಸ್ಮರಣಾರ್ಥ, 07-02-2001 ರಲ್ಲಿ ಅವರ ಪ್ರಶಿಷ್ಯರಾದ ಶ್ರೀ ಶ್ರೀ ಸುಗುಣೇಂದ್ರ ತೀರ್ಥ ಶ್ರೀಪಾದರ ಮೂಲಕ ಮೂಲ ದೇವರಿಗೆ ಅರ್ಪಿಸಿದರೆಂಬ ಉಲ್ಲೇಖವಿರುವ ಶಿಲಾ ಮಂಟಪವನ್ನು ಕಾಣಬಹುದು.
