Sri Bhaganda Maharshi did a long penance to secure special blessings of Lord Subrahmanya and Lord Shiva. Lord Subrahmanya blessed the Maharshi and the place. Lord Subrahmanya named the place as Skanda Kshetra and manifested in the form of a stone image. Lord Shiva blessed Sri Bhaganda Maharshi and assured him of his divine presence in the place. Sri Bhaganda Maharshi installed a Shiva Linga and invoked in it the divine presence of Lord Shiva and worshipped it. Since the holy Shiva Linga was installed by Sri Bhaganda Maharshi, it became popularly known as Sri Bhagandeshwara. It is traditionally believed that a very special manifestation of divinity is present in Sri Bhagandeshwara Linga at Bhagamandala. The exact date of the construction and dedication of Sri Bhagandeshwara and other temples in Bhagamandala is not known, because of lack of historical records. But, it is believed that the origin of the temples belongs to the puranic age. According to the available historical records, it is known that Maharaja Veera Rajendra Wodeyar, the then King of Kodagu, renovated the temple in 1790 AD. ಹಿಂದೆ ಭಗಂಡರೆಂಬ ಮುನಿವರ್ಯರು ಇಲ್ಲಿ ವಾಸವಾಗಿದ್ದು, ಷಣ್ಮುಖಸ್ವಾಮಿಯನ್ನು ಕುರಿತು ತಪಸ್ಸು ಮಾಡಿ ಭಗವಂತನ ಅನುಗ್ರಹಕ್ಕೆ ಪಾತ್ರರಾಗಿದ್ದಾರೆ. ಸುಬ್ರಹ್ಮಣ್ಯಸ್ವಾಮಿಯ ದಿವ್ಯ ನೆಲೆಯಾಗಿದ್ದು ಸ್ಕಂದಕ್ಷೇತ್ರವೆಂದು ಪ್ರಸಿದ್ಧಿ ಪಡೆದಿದ್ದ ಇಂದಿನ ಭಾಗಮಂಡಲದ ಭೂ ಭಾಗವನ್ನು ಭಗಂಡ ಋಷಿಗಳ ಮೇಲೆ ಸುಪ್ರೀತರಾಗಿ ಶ್ರೀ ಸುಬ್ರಹ್ಮಣ್ಯಸ್ವಾಮಿಯು ಅನುಗ್ರಹ ಪೂರ್ವಕವಾಗಿ ಅವರಿಗೆ ಕೊಡುಗೆಯಾಗಿ ನೀಡುತ್ತಾರೆ. ಋಷಿಗಳ ಪರಮಪಾವನನಾದ ತಪೋಭೂಮಿ ಹಾಗೂ ದೇವನೆಲೆಯಾದ ಸ್ಕಂದ ಕ್ಷೇತ್ರದಲ್ಲಿ ಸರ್ವಜೀವರ ಕ್ಷೇಮಕ್ಕಾಗಿ ಶಿವಲಿಂಗವೊಂದನ್ನು ಭಗಂಡ ಮಹರ್ಷಿಗಳು ಪ್ರತಿಷ್ಠಾಪಿಸುತ್ತಾರೆ. ಭಗಂಡ ಋಷಿಯು ನೆಲೆಸಿ ತಪಸ್ಸನ್ನು ಎಸಗಿ ಷಣ್ಮುಖಸ್ವಾಮಿಯಿಂದ ಅನುಗ್ರಹವಾಗಿ ಪಡೆದ ಕ್ಷೇತ್ರವಾದ್ದರಿಂದ ಭಗಂಡಕ್ಷೇತ್ರ ಎಂದು ಹೆಸರಾಯಿತು. ಅದೇ ಹೆಸರು ಮುಂದೆ ಭಾಗಮಂಡಲ ಎಂದು ರೂಪಾಂತರವನ್ನು ಹೊಂದಿತು. ಭಗಂಡ ಋಷಿಗಳು ಶಿವಲಿಂಗವನ್ನು ಪ್ರತಿಷ್ಠೆ ಮಾಡಿದ್ದರಿಂದ ಈ ಕ್ಷೇತ್ರದಲ್ಲಿ ಭಗಂಡೇಶ್ವರನೆಂದು ಸ್ತುತಿಸಿ ಶಿವನನ್ನೇ ಪ್ರಧಾನವಾಗಿ ಪೂಜಿಸುವಂತಾಯಿತು. ಪರಮಪಾವನೆಯಾದ ಕಾವೇರಿ ನದಿಯು ಭಾಗಮಂಡಲಕ್ಕೆ ಹರಿದು ಬಂದಾಗ ಕನ್ನಿಕಾ-ಸುಜ್ಯೋತಿಯರು ಸೇರಿ ತ್ರಿವೇಣಿ ಸಂಗಮವಾದ್ದರಿಂದ ಭಾಗಮಂಡಲವು ಇಮ್ಮಡಿ ಪವಿತ್ರವಾದ ತೀರ್ಥಕ್ಷೇತ್ರವಾಗಿರುತ್ತದೆ. ಭಾಗಮಂಡಲದಲ್ಲಿರುವ ದೇವಾಲಯಗಳು ಕಾಲಕ್ರಮೇಣ ನಾಯಕರು, ಆಳರಸರ ಕಾಲದಲ್ಲಿ ಕಟ್ಟಡದ ಮಟ್ಟಿಗೆ ಯುಕ್ತವಾದ ಸುಧಾರಣೆಯನ್ನು ಪಡೆದವು. ಕೊನೆಗೆ ಕೊಡಗನ್ನು ಆಳಿದ ಶ್ರೀಮತ್ ದೊಡ್ಡವೀರರಾಜೇಂದ್ರ ಒಡೆಯರ ಕಾಲದಲ್ಲಿ ಮತ್ತಷ್ಟು ಅಂದವಾದ ಶಿಲ್ಪಕಲಾಪೂರ್ಣವಾದ ದೇವಸ್ಥಾನ ಕಟ್ಟೋಣವು ನೆರವೇರಿತು. ಅನುಸಾರವಾಗಿ ದೇಗುಲದ ಬ್ರಹ್ಮಕಳಶ ಸಂಪ್ರೋಕ್ಷಣೆಗಳು ಕಲಿವರ್ಷ 4878ನೇ ನಳ ಸಂವತ್ಸರದ ಮಾಘಶುದ್ದ 5ರ ಭಾನುವಾರ ಘಳಿಗೆ 5ಕ್ಕೆ ನಡೆಸಲ್ಪಟ್ಟವು. (ಕ್ರಿ. ಶ. 1790ರಲ್ಲಿ).

It is traditionally believed that a very special manifestation of divinity is present in Sri Bhagandeshwara Linga at Bhagamandala. ಹಿಂದೆ ಭಗಂಡರೆಂಬ ಮುನಿವರ್ಯರು ಸುಬ್ರಹ್ಮಣ್ಯಸ್ವಾಮಿಯ ದಿವ್ಯ ನೆಲೆಯಾಗಿದ್ದು ಸ್ಕಂದಕ್ಷೇತ್ರವೆಂದು ಪ್ರಸಿದ್ಧಿ ಪಡೆದಿದ್ದ ಇಂದಿನ ಭಾಗಮಂಡಲದಲ್ಲಿ ವಾಸವಾಗಿದ್ದು, ಷಣ್ಮುಖಸ್ವಾಮಿಯನ್ನು ಕುರಿತು ತಪಸ್ಸು ಮಾಡಿ ಭಗವಂತನ ಅನುಗ್ರಹಕ್ಕೆ ಪಾತ್ರರಾದರೆಂದು ಪ್ರತೀತಿಯಿದೆ. ಋಷಿಗಳ ಪರಮಪಾವನನಾದ ತಪೋಭೂಮಿ ಹಾಗೂ ದೇವನೆಲೆಯಾದ ಸ್ಕಂದ ಕ್ಷೇತ್ರದಲ್ಲಿ ಸರ್ವಜೀವರ ಕ್ಷೇಮಕ್ಕಾಗಿ ಶಿವಲಿಂಗವೊಂದನ್ನು ಭಗಂಡ ಮಹರ್ಷಿಗಳು ಪ್ರತಿಷ್ಠಾಪಿಸುತ್ತಾರೆ. ಮುಂದೆ ಈ ಕ್ಷೇತ್ರಕ್ಕೆ ಭಗಂಡಕ್ಷೇತ್ರ ಎಂದು ಹೆಸರಾಯಿತು ಹಾಗೂ ಮುಂದೆ ಭಾಗಮಂಡಲ ಎಂದು ರೂಪಾಂತರವನ್ನು ಹೊಂದಿತೆಂದು ಹೇಳಲಾಗುತ್ತದೆ. ಭಗಂಡ ಋಷಿಗಳು ಶಿವಲಿಂಗವನ್ನು ಪ್ರತಿಷ್ಠೆ ಮಾಡಿದ ಕಾರಣ ಭಗಂಡೇಶ್ವರನೆಂದು ಹೆಸರಾಯಿತು. ಪರಮಪಾವನೆಯಾದ ಕಾವೇರಿ ನದಿಯು ಭಾಗಮಂಡಲಕ್ಕೆ ಹರಿದು ಬಂದಾಗ ಕನ್ನಿಕಾ-ಸುಜ್ಯೋತಿಯರು ಸೇರಿ ತ್ರಿವೇಣಿ ಸಂಗಮವಾದ್ದರಿಂದ ಭಾಗಮಂಡಲವು ಪವಿತ್ರವಾದ ತೀರ್ಥಕ್ಷೇತ್ರವಾಗಿದೆ.
