According to Markandeya Purana, Goddess Durga had assumed a very ferocious and dreadful form called Kali when she had to get rid of two demons called Chanda and Munda as they were tormenting the virtuous and the righteous. Goddess beheads the two demons and finally submits them to Mother Goddess. The form with which the Goddess massacres the two demons Chanda and Munda came to be called as Chamundi. Yasmat ChanDam cha MunDam cha grahati vA(a)tra upAgataha| ChAmunDi yEti tatO lOka KhyAti dEvi BhaviShyati|| Once, there was a demon called Raktabeejasura, who had secured a strange boon by which every drop of blood that might fall to the ground from his body would become the origin of thousands of demons. Prayers were offered by gods and goddesses to Goddess Kali to end the horror that demon Raktabeejasura had created in the universe. As mentioned in the Devi Mahatme, Goddess Chamundi stretched her long and wide tongue to suck every drop of blood of Raktabeejasura so that none of it fell on the ground. She stretched her tongue up to the bottom of nether world (Patala Loka) and swallowed Raktabeeja and his replicas. According to some epics and scriptures, Sri Chamundi is also known as Kali or Karali as she had a very wide mouth and sagging breasts. She wears a garland of skulls around the neck and the fire in her eyes is so powerful that it can destroy the entire universe. Earlier, humans and animals were being offered to this Goddess as sacrifice. However, the situation has now changed as fruits, flowers and other eatable items are being offered to the Goddess. Krishnaraja Wodeyar III repaired the shrine in 1827 A.D and built the present beautiful tower at the entrance (Gopura). Blessed by the Goddess, Krishnaraja Wodeyar, an ardent devotee of the mother Goddess, presented to the temple a ‘Simha-vahana’ (A lion-shaped vehicle) and other animal cars and jewels of value. The cars are used even now for processions on special religious occasions. The tower at the entrance has a small image of Lord Ganesha on the doorway. The doorway is silver-plated and has the images of the Goddess in different forms. On either side of the doorway are the images of ‘Dwarapalakas’ or door-keepers. As one enters inside, on the right hand side is a small statue of Lord Ganesha, the remover of all obstacles. After a few steps, there is a flagstaff, the footprints of the Goddess and a small statue of Nandi, facing the sanctum sanctorum. On the right side, before approaching the flag staff, there is an image of ‘Anjaneya’ attached to the wall. On either side of this entrance are two Dikpalakas, Nandini and Kamalini. ‘Skanda Purana’ and other ancient texts mention a sacred place called ‘Trimuta Kshetra’ surrounded by eight hills. Lying on the western side is the Chamundi Hills, one among the eight hills. In the earlier days, the Hill was identified as ‘Mahabaladri’ in honour of God Shiva who resides in the ‘Mahabaleswara Temple’. This is the oldest temple on the hills. In the later days, the hill came to be known as ‘Chamundi Hills’ in honour of the Goddess Chamundi, the chief subject of the ‘Devi Mahathme’. The Goddess is believed to be an incarnation of Parvati, the consort of Lord Shiva. A large number of devotees from all over the country and from abroad visit the temple every year. They believe that the Goddess fulfills their desires and aspirations. Besides the Chamundi and the Mahabaleswara temples, there are a few more temples atop the hills. There are also some interesting spots and the monolith statue of ‘Nandi’ is among them. While proceeding towards the Chamundi Temple, the statue of ‘Mahishasura’ attracts the visitors. The ‘Chamundi Village’ is located close to the temple. The temple is of a quadrangular structure. Built in Dravidian style, it consists of the Main Doorway, Entrance, Navaranga Hall, Antharala Mantapa, Sanctum Sanctorum, and Prakara. There is a beautiful seven-tier Gopura or pyramidal tower at the entrance and a ‘Vimana’ (small tower) atop the sanctum sanctorum. Atop the ‘Shikara’, the tower at the entrance, are seven golden ‘Kalashas’. About 16 feet in height and 24 feet long, this Nandi atop the Chamundi Hills is the third largest in India. The creation of this colossal image is attributed to Dodda Devaraja Wodeyar (1659–1673) on of the illustrious Maharajas of Mysore. It is the same maharaja who also commissioned the 1000 stepped stairway to the hilltop. The idol of Sri Chamundi wears a fearless face, though it is very charming and attractive. The idol is not very large, it is very bright, vibrant and radiant. In Sri Tattwanidhi, a literary work by Sri Krishnaraja Wadeyar, the idol of Sri Chamundeshwari has been described as having golden color (Hemanga), three eyes (Trinetra), youthful (Youvanasta), narrow waist (Krisha Madhya), wide eyes (Vishalakshi), attractive breasts and beautiful neck. Adorned with eight hands, the Goddess beholds trident in the top right and bottom left hands and sword, arrow, diamond, knife, spear, conch and serpent in other hands. The sitting posture of the Goddess is in the Hoysala style of sculpture. Same features appear on the Utsavamurthy or the idol that is taken for procession on palanquin.
