ಶ್ರೀ ಧರ್ಮರಾಯ ಸ್ವಾಮಿ ದೇವಸ್ಥಾನವು ಯಾವ ಕಾಲದಲ್ಲಿ ಯಾರಿಂದ ಕಟ್ಟಲ್ಪಟ್ಟಿತು, ದೇವಸ್ಥಾನದ ಮೂಲ ವಿಗ್ರಹಗಳನ್ನು ಯಾರು ಪ್ರತಿಷ್ಟಾಪಿಸಿದರು ಎಂಬುದರ ಬಗ್ಗೆ ಖಚಿತವಾದ ಲಿಖಿತ ಮಾಹಿತಿಗಳು ಇರುವುದಿಲ್ಲ. ಮಾಹಿತಿಗಳ ಪ್ರಕಾರ ದೇವಾಲಯವನ್ನು ಮಧ್ಯ ಗಂಗರ ಕಾಲದಲ್ಲಿ ಕಟ್ಟಲಾಗಿದೆಯೆಂದು ತಿಳಿದುಬರುತ್ತದೆ. ತದನಂತರ ಇಲ್ಲಿ ಶಕ್ತಿಪೀಠ ಸ್ಥಾಪಿಸಿ ಶಕ್ತಿಯ ಆರಾಧನೆಯನ್ನು ನಡೆಸುತ್ತಿದ್ದಿರಬಹುದೆಂದು ನಂತರ ಮಧ್ಯ ಗಂಗರು ಐದನೆೇ ಅಥವಾ ಆರನೇ ಶತಮಾನದಲ್ಲಿ ದೇವಸ್ಥಾನವನ್ನು ಜೀರ್ಣೋದ್ದಾರಗೊಳಿಸಿ ಇದರಲ್ಲಿ ಧರ್ಮರಾಯ ಸ್ವಾಮಿ ಮೂರ್ತಿಯನ್ನು ಸರ್ಜನಿ ಮುದ್ರೆಯ ಪೀಠಾಸನ ಸ್ಥಿತಿಯಲ್ಲಿ ಹಾಗು ಶಂಕು ಚಕ್ರಗಳನ್ನೊಳಗೊಂಡ ಅಭಯ ಹಸ್ತ ಸ್ಥಿತಿಯಲ್ಲಿ ಶ್ರೀ ಕೃಷ್ಣನ ಮೂರ್ತಿಯನ್ನೂ ಸ್ಥಾಪಿಸಿದರೆಂದು ಹೇಳಲಾಗುತ್ತದೆ. ಈ ದೇವಸ್ಥಾನದ ಮುಂಭಾಗದಲ್ಲಿ ಗಂಗರ ರಾಜಲಾಂಛನಗಳಾದ ಆನೆ ಮತ್ತು ಬೆಳ್ಗೋಡೆಯ ಚಿತ್ರಣಗಳನ್ನು ಕಾಣಬಹುದಾಗಿದೆ. ಇಲ್ಲಿಯ ಶಿಲ್ಪಕಲೆಯಲ್ಲಿ ಮಧ್ಯಕಾಲದ ಗಂಗ ಅರಸರ ಕುರುಹುಗಳನ್ನು ಕಾಣಬಹುದಾಗಿದೆ. ದೇವಾಲಯದ ಗರ್ಭಗುಡಿಯು ಗಂಗರ ಶೈಲಿಯಲ್ಲಿದ್ದು ಇದು ದೇವಾಲಯದ ಅಭಿವೃದ್ದಿಯನ್ನು ಮೂರು ದಿಕ್ಕಿನಿಂದ ತೋರಿಸುತ್ತದೆ ಮುಂಭಾಗದ ರಾಜಗೋಪುರಗಳು ವಿಜಯನಗರದ ಶೈಲಿಯಲ್ಲಿದ್ದು ಇದನ್ನು 1933 ರಲ್ಲಿ ಭಕ್ತಾದಿಗಳು ನಿರ್ಮಿಸಿರುತ್ತಾರೆ. ಬೆಂಗಳೂರಿನ ನಿರ್ಮಾತೃ ಶ್ರೀ ಕೆಂಪೇಗೌಡರು ದೇವಾಲಯದ ಭಕ್ತರಲ್ಲಿ ಒಬ್ಬರಾಗಿದ್ದರು. ಮಾಹಿತಿಗಳ ಪ್ರಕಾರ ದೇವಾಲಯದ ವಿಮಾನ ಗೋಪುರ ಪಲ್ಲವರ ಶೈಲಿಯಲ್ಲಿದ್ದು ಕೆಂಪೇಗೌಡರಿಂದ ಸ್ಥಾಪಿಸಲಾದ ಮಾಗಡಿ ಮತ್ತು ಹಲಸೂರು ದೇವಾಲಯಗಳನ್ನು ಹೋಲುತ್ತದೆ. ಶ್ರೀ ಕೆಂಪೇಗೌಡರು ಸದರಿ ದೇವಾಲಯವನ್ನು ಮುಂದಿಟ್ಟುಕೊಂಡೇ ಬೆಂಗಳೂರನ್ನು ನಿರ್ಮಿಸಿದರೆಂದು ಹಾಗು ಈ ದೇವಾಲಯದ ವಿಮಾನಗೋಪುರವನ್ನೇ ಮಧ್ಯಭಾಗವಾಗಿ ಇಟ್ಟುಕೊಂಡು ನಗರದ ನಾಲ್ಕು ದಿಕ್ಕುಗಳಲ್ಲೂ ಗೋಪುರಗಳನ್ನು ನಿರ್ಮಿಸಿದರೆಂದು ಹೇಳಲಾಗುತ್ತದೆ . ಪ್ರಾಚ್ಯ ವಸ್ತು ಸಂಗ್ರಹಾಲಯದ ಇಲಾಖೆಯವರು ದೇವಾಲಯದ ಕಲ್ಲುಗಳನ್ನು ಪರಿಶೀಲಿಸಿದಾಗ ಸದರಿ ದೇವಾಲಯವು ಸುಮಾರು 800 ವರ್ಷಗಳಷ್ಟು ಹಳೆಯದೆಂದು ಅಭಿಪ್ರಾಯ ಪಟ್ಟಿರುತ್ತಾರೆ. 2009ರಲ್ಲಿ ದೇವಸ್ಥಾನದಲ್ಲಿ ಮೂಲವಿಗ್ರಹಗಳ ಪುನರ್ ಪ್ರತಿಷ್ಠಾಪನಾ ಹಾಗೂ ಮಹಾ ಕುಂಭಾಬಿಷೇಕವನ್ನು ನಡೆಸಲಾಗಿತ್ತು. The history of the temple as to the name of the builder and date of construction is not clear. The available information suggests that the temple was constructed during the period of western Gangas. Further, it is said that a “shaktipeetha” was established and worshipped here. According to sources, the western gangas later renovated the temple during 5th or 6th centuries and consecrated the idols of Sri Dharmaraya in Sarjini Mudra and Sri Krishna showing “abhayahasta” in one hand and holding the chakra and shanka in other hands. The front yard of temple has images of elephant and white umbrella which were the royal emblems of the Gangas. The sanctum sanctorum of the temple is in Ganga architectural style and depicts the temple improvements from three directions. The front gopura of the temple is in Vijayanagara style of architecture and was built in 1933 with the support of the devotees. Sri Kempegowda, the founder of Bengaluru was an ardent devotee of this temple. According to sources, the vimana gopura of the temple is in pallava style of architecture and resembles the gopuras of Magadi and Ulsoor temples established by sri Kempegowda. It is said that Sri Kempegowda constructed the city of Bengaluru keeping the Dharmaraya swami temple as the centre and then constructing gopuras in all the four directions. The archeological department, after examining the stones of this temple, has opined that the present temple structure is 800 years old. In 2009 the re-consecration of the temple deities and maha kumbhaabhisheka were conducted.
