The temple is located at an altitude of more than a hundred feet above the land. There are over 257 steps to reach the temple. The significant and ancient architecture of the temple allows devotees to have darshana of the Goddess "Sri Durgadevi" from the Outer yard {Horangana} itself. The Inner yard of the temple is about three feet higher than the outer yard. Inside sanctum sanctorum {Garbha-Gudi} the idol of the Goddess has been installed on the pedestal. ದೇವಸ್ಥಾನವು ಭೂಮಿಯಿಂದ ಸುಮಾರು ನೂರು ಅಡಿಗೂ ಮೀರಿ ಎತ್ತರದಲ್ಲಿದೆ. ದೇವಸ್ಥಾನಕ್ಕೆ ಸರಿ ಸುಮಾರು ೨೫೭ ಮೆಟ್ಟಿಲುಗಳಿವೆ. ದೇವಾಲಯದಲ್ಲಿ ಭಕ್ತಾದಿಗಳು ದೇವಿಯ ದರ್ಶನವನ್ನು ಹೊರಾಂಗಣದಿಂದ ಪಡೆಯುವಂತೆ ಮಾಡಿದ್ದಾರೆ. ಹೊರಾಂಗಣ ಪ್ರಕಾರದ ೩ಅಡಿ ಎತ್ತರದಲ್ಲಿ ಗರ್ಭಗುಡಿ ನಿರ್ಮಿಸಿದ್ದರೆ, ಗರ್ಭಗುಡಿಯಲ್ಲಿಯೂ ೩ಅಡಿ ಎತ್ತರದ ಪೀಠದ ಮೇಲೆ ದೇವಿಯನ್ನು ಸ್ಥಾಪಿಸಲಾಗಿದೆ. ಇದು ದುರ್ಗಾಲಯದ ವೈಶಿಷ್ಟ್ಯ ಪ್ರಾಚೀನ ವಾಸ್ತುಶಿಲ್ಪ ಕಲೆಗೆ ಮಾದರಿಯಾಗಿದೆ.

"Durga Betta", which is also known as "Kunjara Amma" is the significant attraction of the village. According to "Sumadhwa Vijaya", an epic on "Sri Sri Madhwacharya", reveals that, the temple of Goddess "Sri Durga Devi" is erected by Supreme Lord "Sri Parashurama" atop the hill. The Goddess "Sri Durgadevi" in sanctum-sanctorum is seen holding Mahishasura on the edge of her trident. It is mentioned in the "Theertha Prabandha, done by the great Saint "Sri Sri Vadiraja Thirtha", pontiff of "Sri Vadiraja Matha", that the Goddess "Sri Durga Devi" of "Kunjaru" killed demon "Mahishasura". As per the legend, "Sri Sri Madhvacharya", the founder of the Dwaitha Philosophy, had spent his childhood days at "Kunjarugiri". One day, when he was in the Kunjaru temple, his mother called from Pajaka, which is two Kilometers away from Pajaka. It is believed that Sri Madhwacharya in his childhood called as Vasudeva, had jumped straight to his house from Kunjarugiri. It is said that till today, his footprints can be seen on a particular rock. Around the hill, there are four "Theerthas". The four Theerthas namely 'Dhanus Theertha', 'Gada Theertha', 'Bana Theertha' and 'Parashu Theertha', were visited by Sri Madhwacharya every day. ಸುಮಧ್ವ ವಿಜಯದ ಪ್ರಕಾರ ದುರ್ಗಾದೇವಿಯ ದೇವಸ್ಥಾನವನ್ನು ಸರ್ವೋತ್ತಮನಾದ ಶ್ರೀ ಪರಶುರಾಮ ದೇವರು ಬೆಟ್ಟದ ತುದಿಯಲ್ಲಿ ಸ್ಥಾಪಿಸಿದ್ದು ಎಂಬ ಉಲ್ಲೇಖವಿದೆ. ಗರ್ಭ ಗುಡಿಯಲ್ಲಿ ದೇವಿಯು ಮಹಿಷಾಸುರನನ್ನು ತನ್ನ ತ್ರಿಶೂಲದಿಂದ ಸಂಹಾರ ಮಾಡುವ ರೀತಿಯಲ್ಲಿ ದೇವಿಯ ವಿಗ್ರಹವಿದೆ. ಶ್ರೀ ವಾದಿರಾಜರು ರಚಿಸಿರುವ 'ತೀರ್ಥ ಪ್ರಬಂಧದಲ್ಲಿ' ಕುಂಜಾರು ದುರ್ಗಾದೇವಿಯು ಮಹಿಷಾಸುರನನ್ನು ಸಂಹಾರಮಾಡಿದಳು ಎಂಬ ಉಲ್ಲೇಖವಿದೆ. ದಂತ ಕತೆಯ ಪ್ರಕಾರ, ದ್ವೈತ ಮತದ ಪ್ರತಿಷ್ಠಾಪನಾಚಾರ್ಯರೆಂದೇ ಪ್ರಸಿದ್ಧರಾದ ಶ್ರೀಮನ್ ಮಧ್ವಾಚಾರ್ಯರು ತಮ್ಮ ಬಾಲ್ಯದ ಹೆಚ್ಚು ಸಮಯವನ್ನು ಈ ಕುಂಜಾರುಗಿರಿಯಲ್ಲಿ ಕಳೆದರೆಂಬ ಐತಿಹ್ಯವಿದೆ. ಗಿರಿಯು ಧನುಷ್ ತೀರ್ಥ, ಗದಾ ತೀರ್ಥ, ಬಾಣ ತೀರ್ಥ ಮತ್ತು ಪರಶು ತೀರ್ಥ ಎಂಬ ೪ತೀರ್ಥಗಳನ್ನು ಹೊಂದಿದ್ದು ಈ ನಾಲ್ಕು ತೀರ್ಥಗಳಿಗೂ ಶ್ರೀ ಮಧ್ವರು ಪ್ರತಿನಿತ್ಯ ಹೋಗುತ್ತಿದ್ದರೆಂಬ ಉಲ್ಲೇಖವಿದೆ.

In the Praakaara, to the left side of Goddess "Sri Durga Devi", the idol of the Nirmalya Devata "Mundini" has been installed. Generally the Nirmalya Devata is represented by a plain stone in all the temples. Whereas, the Durgalaya of Kunjar, is an exception to this, as one may see the idol of the "Nirmalya Devatha" in the sitting posture, folding one of her legs. ಪ್ರಕಾರದಲ್ಲಿ ದೇವಿಯ ಎಡಭಾಗಕ್ಕೆ ಬರುವ ಹಾಗೆ ನಿರ್ಮಾಲ್ಯ ದೇವತಾ ಮೂರ್ತಿಯನ್ನು ಸ್ಥಾಪಿಸಲಾಗಿದೆ. ಬೇರೆ ಎಲ್ಲಾ ದೇವಸ್ಥಾನಗಳಲ್ಲಿ ಬರೀ ಕಲ್ಲಿನರೀತಿಯಿಂದ ಇದ್ದರೆ ಈ ದುರ್ಗಾಲಯದ ನಿರ್ಮಾಲ್ಯ ದೇವತೆಯಾದ ‘ಮುಂಡಿನಿ’, ಒಂದು ಕಾಲನ್ನು ಮಡಚಿ ಕುಳಿತಿರುವ ವಿಗ್ರಹ ರೂಪದಲ್ಲಿದೆ. ಈ ದೃಶ್ಯ ಬಹಳ ವಿರಳ.

In Kunjarubetta Durgalaya, everyday holy water is fetched from Gadha Teertha and Baana Teertha, which are at the bottom of the hill. It has become a practice as there is no well in the premises of the shrine. Really it has become a tedious task to fetch the water from the bottom of the hill. ಕುಂಜಾರುಬೆಟ್ಟದ ದುರ್ಗಾಲಯದ ಆವರಣದಲ್ಲಿ ಬಾವಿ ಇಲ್ಲ.ಆ ದೇವಿಯ ಪೂಜೆಗಾಗಿ ಪ್ರತಿನಿತ್ಯ ಗಿರಿಯ ಕೆಳಗಿರುವ ಗದಾ ತೀರ್ಥ ಹಾಗು ಬಾಣತೀರ್ಥದಿಂದ ಅಗ್ರೋದಕ ತರುವರೆಂಬ ಪ್ರತೀತಿ ಇದೆ. ಹೀಗೆ ಕೆಳಗಿನಿಂದ ನೀರನ್ನು ಪೂಜೆಗಾಗಿ ತರುವುದು ಇಲ್ಲಿಯ ಒಂದು ಸಾಹಸದ ಚಟುವಟಿಕೆಯೇ ಸರಿ.
