During Dwapara Yuga, it is said that Kaurava emperor Janamejaya had undertaken a penance at Kalyanagar to get rid of the negative impact of an inadvertent mistake said to have been committed during the Sarpa Yaga. Even sage Gautama had done penance in this place, according to some sources. ಕಲ್ಯಾಣ ನಗರವು ಕುರುವಂಶಸ್ಥ ಜನಮೇಜಯ ಮಹಾರಾಜನು ಮಾಡಿದ ಸರ್ಪಯಾಗದಲ್ಲಿ ತಲೆದೋರಿದ ದೋಷದ ನಿವಾರಣೆಗಾಗಿ ತಪಸ್ಸನ್ನು ಆಚರಿಸಿದ ಸ್ಥಳ ಎಂದು ಹೇಳಲಾಗುತ್ತದೆ. ಅದರಂತೆ, ಶ್ರೀ ಗೌತಮ ಮಹರ್ಷಿಗಳು ಕೂಡ ಈ ಸ್ಥಳದ ಸಮೀಪದಲ್ಲಿಯೇ ತಪಸ್ಸನ್ನು ಆಚರಿಸಿದ್ದರು ಎಂಬ ಪ್ರತೀತಿ ಇದೆ.

Sri Karanji Anjaneya temple at Basavanagudi in Bengaluru has epic and historical significance. Earlier, the place where Sri Karanji Anjaneya temple is presently seen was called as Kalyana Nagara. The area surround that Kalyana Nagara was covered with a dense forest. Kempegowda I, the architect of Bengaluru, called the area consisting of the present day Basavanagudi, N.R. Colony and Gavipuram as Sunkena Halli. ಬೆಂಗಳೂರಿನ ಬಸವನಗುಡಿಯಲ್ಲಿರುವ ಶ್ರೀ ಕಾರಂಜಿ ಆಂಜನೇಯ ದೇವಸ್ಥಾನವು ಪೌರಾಣಿಕ ಹಾಗೂ ಐತಿಹಾಸಿಕ ಹಿನ್ನೆಲೆ ಹೊಂದಿದೆ. ಈ ದೇವಸ್ಥಾನವಿರುವ ಸ್ಥಳವು ಹಿಂದೆ ಕಲ್ಯಾಣನಗರಿ ಎಂದು ಕ್ಯಾತಿಹೊಂದಿತ್ತು. ಅಂತಹ ಈ ಕಲ್ಯಾಣ ನಗರದ ಸುತ್ತ-ಮುತ್ತಲಿನ ಪ್ರದೇಶವನ್ನು ಬೆಂಗಳೂರಿನ ಶಿಲ್ಪಿ ಮೊದಲನೆ ಕೆಂಪೇಗೌಡರು ಬಸವನಗುಡಿ, ಎನ್.ಆರ್. ಕಾಲೋನಿ ಮತ್ತು ಗವೀಪುರ ಬಡಾವಣೆಗಳನ್ನು ಸೇರಿಸಿಕೊಂಡು ಸುಂಕೇನ ಹಳ್ಳಿ ಎಂದು ಕರೆಯುತ್ತಿದ್ದರು. ಈ ಹಳ್ಳಿಯ ಪ್ರದೇಶವು ದಟ್ಟವಾದ ಅರಣ್ಯದಿಂದ ಕೂಡಿತ್ತು.

The idol of Anjaneya at this temple is holding the Choodamani, which was given to him by Seethadevi at Ashoka gardens of Lanka, in both hands. The idol reminds the devotees of the incidents described in Sri Ramayana. Historians are of the opinion that the idol of Sri Anjaneya consecrated in this temple might be belonging to Pallava or Vijayanagar rulers’ period. As the subtle artwork and sculptural nuances of the idols of Ganesha and Bullock consecrated in the nearby temples closely resemble the idol of Sri Anjaneya, the historians say that all the three idols might be belonging to the same period. As a fountain springs from the toe of a bullock located in the nearby temple, the presiding deity here has been called as Karanji Anjaneya, where Karanji is a Kannada word for fountain. The fountain springing from the toe of bullock has become the most popular Vrushabhavati River. According to another explanation, the word “Karanji” was actually “Kerenji” as a tank or a lake was existing in the place where National High School presently exists. The Kerenji Anjaneya temple was on the banks of that lake and hence the name. Kere in Kannada means lake or tank Anji means anchu or border. This temple is managed by Government of Karnataka. Special pujas and homas are conducted on the occasions of Hanuman Jayanati and Sri Rama Navami here. ಇತಿಹಾಸಕಾರರು ಈ ವಿಗ್ರಹವು ಪಲ್ಲವರ ಅಥವಾ ವಿಜಯನಗರ ಅರಸರ ಕಾಲಕ್ಕೆ ಸೇರಿದ್ದಿರಬಹುದೆಂದು ಹೇಳುತ್ತಾರೆ. ಹಾಗೆಯೇ ಈ ದೇವಸ್ಥಾನದ ಸಮೀಪವಿರುವ ಗಣಪತಿ ಹಾಗೂ ಬಸವಣ್ಣನ ವಿಗ್ರಹ ಮತ್ತು ಆಂಜನೇಯ ಸ್ವಾಮಿಯ ವಿಗ್ರಹದ ಪಾದದ ಮೇಲ್ಭಾಗದಲ್ಲಿರುವ ನೂಪುರ ಮತ್ತು ಉಳಿದ ಆಭರಣಗಳ ಶಿಲ್ಪವು ಒಂದೇ ರೀತಿಯಾಗಿರುವುದೆಂದೂ ಆದ ಕಾರಣ ಈ ಮೂರು ವಿಗ್ರಹಗಳು ಒಂದೇ ಕಾಲಕ್ಕೆ ಸೇರಿರಬಹುದೆಂದೂ ಇತಿಹಾಸಕಾರರು ಹೇಳುತ್ತಾರೆ. ಶ್ರೀ ಕಾರಂಜಿ ಆಂಜನೇಯ ಸ್ವಾಮಿ ದೇವಾಲಯದ ಸಮೀಪದಲ್ಲಿರುವ ಬೃಹದಾಕಾರದ ನಂದಿ ವಿಗ್ರಹದ ಪಾದದಡಿಯಿಂದ ನೀರಿನ ಬುಗ್ಗೆಯೊಂದು ಹರಿಯುತ್ತಿದ್ದ ಕಾರಣ ಈ ಸ್ಥಳಕ್ಕೆ ಕಾರಂಜಿ ಎಂಬ ಹೆಸರು ಬಂದಿತೆನ್ನಲಾಗುತ್ತದೆ. ಈ ಬುಗ್ಗೆಯು ಬೆಂಗಳೂರಿನ ವೃಷಭಾವತಿ ನದಿಯಾಗಿ ಹೆಸರುವಾಸಿಯಾಯಿತು. ಈ ನದಿಯ ಮುಂಭಾಗದಲ್ಲಿ ಹಾಗೂ ಬೆಟ್ಟದ ಮೇಲ್ಭಾಗದಲ್ಲಿ ಶ್ರೀ ರಾಮಾಯಣದಲ್ಲಿ ಬರುವ ಸೀತಾನ್ವೇಷಣೆಯನ್ನು ನೆನಪಿಸುವಂತಹ, ಶ್ರೀ ಆಂಜನೇಯ ಸ್ವಾಮಿಯು ತನ್ನೆರಡು ಕೈಗಳಲ್ಲಿ ಚೂಡಾಮಣೆಯನ್ನು ಹಿಡಿದುಕೊಂಡಿರುವ ಏಕಶಿಲೆಯ ನಿಂತಿರುವ ಭಂಗಿಯ ಸ್ವಯಂ ವ್ಯಕ್ತವಾಗಿರುವ ವಿಗ್ರಹವನ್ನು ಪ್ರತಿಷ್ಠಾಪಿಸಲಾಗಿದೆ. ಈ ಶ್ರೀ ಆಂಜನೇಯ ಸ್ವಾಮಿಯನ್ನು ಇಲ್ಲಿಯ ವೃಷಭಾವತಿ ನದಿಯ ನೀರಿನ ಬುಗ್ಗೆಯು ಉಂಟಾಗಿರುವ ಕಾರಣ ಕಾರಂಜಿ ಆಂಜನೇಯ ಎಂದು ಕರೆಯಲಾಯಿತು. ಈ ದೇವಾಲಯವು ಕರ್ನಾಟಕ ಸರ್ಕಾರದ ಮೇಲ್ವಿಚಾರಣೆಗೆ ಒಳಪಟ್ಟಿದೆ. ವಾರ್ಷಿಕವಾಗಿ ಹನುಮಜ್ಜಯಂತಿ ಹಾಗೂ ಶ್ರೀರಾಮನವಮಿಗಳಂದು ವಿಶೇಷ ಪೂಜೆಗಳನ್ನು ಹಾಗೂ ಕಾರ್ಯಕ್ರಮಗಳನ್ನು ಹಮ್ಮಿಕೊಳ್ಳಲಾಗುತ್ತದೆ.
