The plot on which Sri Chandramouleshwara temple is found today was once the spot where Lord Chandra (the Moon) had done penance to get himself relieved from the curse of Daksha Prajapati. The place where Chandra did penance came to be known as Udupi. Popular belief is that King Ramabhoja installed a statue of Sri Anantheshwara here. In the word Udupi, “Udu” means a star and “pa” means follower. Usually, devotees first visit Sri Anantheshwara and Sri Chandramouleshwara temples before visiting Sri Krishna temple.
According to a legend related to the idol of Sri Krishna at Udupi Mutt, in Dwaparayuga, Sri Krishna was requested by his mother Devaki Devi to display some of his activities during boyhood, which she had missed. When Lord Krishna assumed the form like a boy and started displaying certain acts of his boyhood days, his wife Rukmini Devi watched him by hiding in a corner. Later, she urged Sri Krishna to provide her with his idol as a boy for worshipping him in that form. Sri Krishna obliged and got a statue of himself as a boy, holding Kadagolu or the club used for churning curds, made of black Saligrama Shile, which is considered to be holy. This statue was carved by celestial sculptor Vishwakarma. Sri Krishna handed over the statue to Rukmini Devi. She kept that statue in her apartment and was offering worship to it every day. When Sri Krishna concluded his earthly life and went to his heavenly abode, Arjuna took the statue, which was adorned with the symbol of disc (Chakra), got it consecrated in Rukmini Forests and was offering worship. With the passage of time, the statue of Sri Krishna was covered by soil. Later, in Kaliyuga, a sailor took the lump of this soil in which the statue of Sri Krishna and kept in his ship as ballast. Carrying gems and diamonds in the ship, he was sailing from Dwaraka to Rajatapeethapura or Udupi. Meanwhile, Acharya Madhwa was aware that the Lord’s idol was about to arrive and therefore sat on the sea beach at Malpe. A horrid storm occurred in the sea and the ship was about to sink. Sri Madhwacharya, who knew that the holy statue of Lord Krishna was coming that day, was doing meditation on the sea shore (near Malpe). On seeing the storm-struck ship, Acharya Madhwa waved his saffron robe towards the ship and halted the storm. Sri Madhwacharya drew the ship safely to the shores. The sailor was astonished by the mystic power of Sri Madhwacharya and offered to give away everything that was there in the ship. Sri Madhwacharya, however, asked the sailor to give the lump of Gopeechandana. On receiving the lump, Sri Madhwacharya sprinkled the holy water on the lump, took the statue of Lord Krishna, cleaned it and carried it to the place where he wanted to consecrate the idol. On his way, Sri Madhwacharya recited Dwadasha Stotra, which is very sacred and unique. He consecrated the idol with the face turned towards the west. He chose eight of his young disciples and vested the responsibility of worshiping the idol with them, besides propagating the Dwaita philosophy. Earlier, before the consecration of the idol, it had been kept in a pond, as part of a procedure and ritual. The pond in which the idol had been kept is known as Madhwa Sarovar and the sanctum sanctorum where the idol has been installed is the renowned Sri Krishna temple. According to some sources, Sri Madhvacharya installed the idol during the latter half of 13th century.
Sri Madhwacharya was born in a tiny village called Pajaka, which is about six km away from Udupi. Madhyageha Bhatta was his father. The name of Sri Madhwacharya in the pre-sainthood period was Vasudeva. Vasudeva had earned a name for himself for his unmatched intelligence, sharp intellect, memory power, ability to understand and genius during his boyhood. Vasudeva was a disciple of Sri Achyutaprajna. Proponent of Dwaita Siddhanta Sri Madhwacharya visited Sri Badari Kshetra three times during his life and met Sri Vedavyasa there. Sri Madhwacharya, who has written several exemplary books in Sanskrit on Dwaita philosophy, is the third incarnation of Lord Vayu. In Tretayuga, he was Lord Hanuman and in Dwapara Yuga, he was Lord Bheemasena. As he was always engaged in protecting the pious and punishing the perpetrators, Sri Madhwacharya, during his third incarnation, defeated the Maya Vada or monism and established the Tatwa Vada or Dwaita Siddhanta school of thought.
Sri Madhwa Sarovara is a pond located behind the sanctorum sanctorum of Sri Krishna Mutt. It is said that according to some explanations in Puranas, this pond existed even in Krutayuga. Earlier, it was named as Papanashini and after the incarnation of Sri Madhwacharya, it came to be known as Sri Madhwa Sarovara. Holy Ganga River is believed to be present in this pond for the anointment of Sri Krishna and Sri Madhwacharya. In the middle of the pond, there is a beautiful stone Mantap. On Utthana Dwadashi Day, milk anointment is performed in the Mantap in the evening. To the right of this pond, there is a temple dedicated to Bhageerathi Devi. The idol of Bhageerati Devi, who is called Makaravahini, was consecrated by Sri Vibudhapriya Tirtharu of Sri Adamar Mutt.
There are two rooms in this stone structure of sanctum sanctorum. In the first room, the seer performs his routine meditation, recitation etc. The Last Seva of the day by the Seer, denoted as Yekanta Seva, is performed in this room. On the right side of this room, there is the sanctum sanctorum in which the idol of Lord Krishna has been consecrated. The idol of Sri Krishna is made of Saligrama Shila. The idol is 2.5 ft. high and is adorned with the holy disc (Chakra). The idol depicts Lord Krishna as a boy holding a rope in the right hand and a churning club in the left. On the backside of the head of Lord Krishna, there are three plaits. This sanctum sanctorum is always glittering with lights burning with ghee. A Nanda Deepa lit by Sri Madhwacharya about 800 years ago at the auspicious Bhadra Kala is still burning. It has not extinguished so far.
A large room to the right of the sanctum sanctorum was the place where Sri Madhwacharya used to sit. This seat is called Sarvajna Peetha, where Sarvajna means omniscient. Pontiffs of Paryaya Mutt alone sit here as a semblance of Sri Madhwacharya is believed to be present here even to this day. The paryaya Mutt pontiff blesses the devotees sitting on this seat. In the room to the right of Sarvajna Peetha, the main deity of Paryaya Mutt is placed and the daily samsthana puja performed.
Sri Madhwacharya set up Ashta Mutts in Udupi to ensure continuous and incessant Puja to the idol of Lord Krishna. For this purpose, he chose eight young disciples and assigned them the duty of offering puja to the idol of Lord Krishna regularly. Initially, the term of Paryaya (in rotation) for each mutt had been fixed as two months by Sri Madhwacharya. However, during the regime of Sri Vadiraja of Sode Mutt, the term of Paryaya was extended to two years for each mutt head. This was done on the advice of Sri Vadiraja, who felt that two months was too short to undertake any development work at Sri Krishna Mutt. Sri Vadiraja also got separate buildings constructed for each of the eight mutts on Car Street, around the Sri Krishna Mutt, in Udupi. Even to this day, the routine activities of each mutt is carried on at the original location of respective mutts and only during the Paryaya period, the respective mutt seer stays in Udupi, worships Lord Krishna for two years and looks after its day-to-day activities.
Kanakana Kindi is at the centre of a wall in Chandrashala and in front of Sri Krishna. As Kanakadasa used to see the Lord through this window (kindi), this has been called as Kanakana Kindi. Pontiffs of the Ashta Mutts fallow a custom of first having the Darshan of Lord Krishna through Kanakana Kindi before taking charge of the Paryaya Peetha.
