“Sri Puthige Matha”, one of the Astha Matha’s is located at Puttige village in Udupi District. It is said that “Sri Sri Kavindra Tirtha” (Shathayushigalu), who has renovated the present building of Sri Puthige Matha. During renovation the images of Elephant and Lions were engraved on the Roof of the Temple. Thereafter, it is believed that villagers faced the increased menace of Elephants and Lions. In order to get rid of the existing menace of Elephants and Lions in the village, the sage consecrated idols of Lord Narasimha and Ganapathi and removed the engraved pictures of Elephant and Lions. Thus, the villagers were relieved from the torment. The temple premises has Brundavans of previous pontiffs of Sri Puthige Matha, namely “Sri Sri Ananda Tirtha and “Sri Sri Kavindra Tirtha” etc.. Education is imparted to students in the Gurukula. Vedanta, Paurohithya, Grammar, Nyaya and Literature are being taught in the Vidhyapeeta. ಉಡುಪಿಯ ಅಷ್ಟಮಠಗಳಲ್ಲಿ ಒಂದಾದ ಪುತ್ತಿಗೆ ಮಠದ ಮೂಲ ಮಹಾಸಂಸ್ಥಾನ ಕ್ಷೇತ್ರ ಈ ಪುತ್ತಿಗೆ ಗ್ರಾಮ. ಈ ಮಠದ ಪರಂಪರೆಯಲ್ಲಿ ಬಂದ ಶ್ರೀ ಶ್ರೀ ಕವೀಂದ್ರ ತೀರ್ಥರು (ಶತಾಯುಷಿಗಳು) ಈ ಮಠದ ಕಟ್ಟಡದ ಜೀರ್ಣೋದ್ಧಾರ ಮಾಡಿದರೆಂಬ ಪ್ರತೀತಿ ಇದೆ, ಆ ಸಂದರ್ಭದಲ್ಲಿ ದೇವಸ್ಥಾನದ ಮೇಲ್ಚಾವಣಿ ಆಧಾರ ಕಂಬದಲ್ಲಿ ಆನೆ ಹಾಗೂ ಸಿಂಹಗಳನ್ನು ಕೆತ್ತಿಸಲಾಗಿತ್ತು. ಇದಾದ ಕೆಲವೇ ದಿನಗಳಲ್ಲಿ ಊರ ತುಂಬ ಆನೆ, ಸಿಂಹಗಳ ಹಾವಳಿ ಹೆಚ್ಚಾಯಿತು. ಇದನ್ನು ಕಂಡ ಯತಿಗಳು ಕಂಬದಲ್ಲಿ ಕೆತ್ತಲಾಗಿದ್ದ ಸಿಂಹ ಮತ್ತು ಆನೆಯನ್ನು ಆವಾಹಿಸಿ ಕಲಾಕರ್ಷಣೆ ಮೂಲಕ ನರಸಿಂಹ ದೇವರ ಹಾಗು ಗಣಪತಿ ವಿಗ್ರಹವನ್ನು ಪ್ರತಿಷ್ಠೆ ಮಾಡಿಸಿದರೆಂಬ ಉಲ್ಲೇಖವಿದೆ. ಆ ನಂತರ ಗ್ರಾಮಸ್ಥರು ನೆಮ್ಮದಿ ಹೊಂದಿದರು ಎಂಬುದಾಗಿ ಇಲ್ಲಿನ ಇತಿಹಾಸ. ಈ ದೇವಾಲಯದ ಆವರಣದಲ್ಲಿ ಈ ಮಠದ ಪರಂಪರೆಯ ಯತಿಗಳಾದ ಆನಂದ ತೀರ್ಥರು, ಕವೀಂದ್ರತೀರ್ಥರೇ ಮೊದಲಾದವರ ವೃಂದಾವನಗಳಿವೆ. ಇಲ್ಲಿ ಅನೇಕ ವಿದ್ಯಾರ್ಥಿಗಳಿಗೆ ವೇದ, ವೇದಾಂತ, ಪೌರೋಹಿತ್ಯ, ನ್ಯಾಯ, ವ್ಯಾಕರಣ, ಸಾಹಿತ್ಯ ಮೊದಲಾದ ವಿಷಯಗಳನ್ನು ಗುರುಕುಲ ಮಾದರಿಯಲ್ಲಿ ಭೋದಿಸುತ್ತಿದ್ದಾರೆ.
