As ordained by Sri Parameshwara, king Sumanaska decided to conduct a Yajjna called “Paundarika”, which was one of the seven Mahayagas carried out by kings for the good of the world. He requested Sage Muktaka to provide protection till the conclusion of the Yajjna. Demons Janu and Sumandala heard of this Paundarika Yajna from Sage Narada and discussed with Sage Sukracharya about the possibilities of destroying or stopping this Yajjna. They sent an army of demons with ministers Surabahu and Ghatodara. However, they were not able to survive against sage Muktaka. Learning this, Janu and Sumandala attacked with huge army. Muktaka unable to stop these demons prayed to Godess Parvati, who formed from the Homakunda and learnt the secrets of the boons the demons had received from Lord Brahma. She overcame the demons in no time at all. Happy seeing all this, Sage Muktaka praised the Godess as, “Oh Nimishamba!” From then on Goddess Parvati came to popularly known as Nimishamba. The present temple is believed to be the place where the Yajjna took place. The deity of Nimishamba with weapons and Abhaya hasta in Ekasana is believed to be the absolver of all sins by devotees. A Srichakra carved in blackstone has been installed in front of the deity. ಶ್ರೀ ಪರಮೇಶ್ವರನ ಆಜ್ಞೆಯಂತೆ ರಾಜ ಸುಮನಸ್ಕನು ಪೌಂಡರೀಕ ಯಾಗವನ್ನು ಲೋಕ ಕಲ್ಯಾಣಾರ್ಥವಾಗಿ ಮಾಡಲು ನಿಶ್ಚಯಿಸಿದನು. ಪೌಂಡರೀಕವು ಹಿಂದೆ ರಾಜರುಗಳು ಪ್ರಜಾಹಿತಕ್ಕಾಗಿ ಕೈಗೊಳ್ಳುತ್ತಿದ್ದ ಸಪ್ತಮಹಾಯಾಗಗಳಲ್ಲಿ ಒಂದಾಗಿದೆ. ಅದರಂತೆ ಯಾಗದ ರಕ್ಷಣೆಯ ಹೊಣೆಯನ್ನು ಸಾಕ್ಷಾತ್ ರುದ್ರರೂಪಿಯಾದ ಮುಕ್ತಕಋಷಿಗೆ ವಹಿಸಿದರು. ಈ ವಿಚಾರವನ್ನು ರಾಕ್ಷಸರಾದ ಜಾನು ಮತ್ತು ಸುಮಂಡಲರು ಶ್ರೀಮನ್‌ನಾರದರಿಂದ ತಿಳಿದುಕೊಂಡರು. ಹೇಗಾದರೂ ಮಾಡಿ ಈ ಯಾಗವನ್ನು ಕೆಡಿಸಲೇಬೇಕೆಂದು ತಮ್ಮ ಗುರುಗಳಾದ ಶುಕ್ರಾಚಾರ್ಯರಲ್ಲಿ ಮಂತ್ರಾಲೋಚನೆ ನಡೆಸಿದರು. ಜಾನು ಮತ್ತು ಸುಮಂಡಲರು ತಮ್ಮ ಮಂತ್ರಿಗಳಾದ ಶೂರಬಾಹು ಮತ್ತು ಘಟೋದರರಿಂದೊಡಗೂಡಿದ ಸೈನ್ಯವನ್ನು ಕಳುಹಿಸಿದರು. ಇವರ ಸೈನ್ಯವನ್ನು ಕ್ಷಣಾರ್ಧದಲ್ಲಿ ಮುಕ್ತಕನು ಸಂಹರಿಸಿದನು. ಈ ಸುದ್ದಿಯನ್ನು ತಿಳಿದ ಜಾನು ಮತ್ತು ಸುಮಂಡಲರು ಕೋಪಗೊಂಡು ಸ್ವತಃ ತಾವೇ ಮುಕ್ತಕ ಋಷಿಯೊಡನೆ ಯುದ್ಧಕ್ಕೆ ಸನ್ನದ್ಧರಾದರು. ಈ ಯುದ್ಧದಲ್ಲಿ ಮುಕ್ತಕನು ಸೋಲನುಭವಿಸಬೇಕಾಯಿತು. ಮುಕ್ತಕನಲ್ಲಿರುವ ಎಲ್ಲಾ ಅಸ್ತ್ರಗಳು ನಿಷ್ಪ್ರಯೋಜಕವಾದವು. ಯುದ್ಧದಲ್ಲಿ ಸೋತ ಮುಕ್ತಕನು ಪಾರ್ವತಿಯನ್ನು ಕುರಿತು ಪ್ರಾರ್ಥಿಸಿದನು. ಪಾರ್ವತಿದೇವಿಯು ಯಜ್ಞಕುಂಡದಿಂದ ಉದ್ಭವಿಸಿ, ಜಾನು ಮತ್ತು ಸುಮಂಡಲರು ಯಾವುದೇ ಆಯುಧದಿಂದ ತಮ್ಮ ಸಂಹಾರವಾಗಬಾರದೆಂದು ಬ್ರಹ್ಮನಿಂದ ವರ ಪಡೆದಿದ್ದನ್ನು ದಿವ್ಯದೃಷ್ಟಿಯಿಂದ ತಿಳಿದ ಪಾರ್ವತಿದೇವಿಯು ನಿಮಿಷ ಮಾತ್ರದಲ್ಲಿ ಅವರನ್ನು ಸಂಹರಿಸಿದಳು. ಇದರಿಂದ ಸಂತುಷ್ಟನಾದ ಮುಕ್ತಕ ಋಷಿಯು “ ಓ ಜಗನ್ಮಾತೆ ನಿಮಿಷಾಂಬಾ! “, ಎಂಬ ಹರ್ಷೋದ್ಗಾರ ಮಾಡಿದನು. ಅಂದಿನಿಂದ ಪಾರ್ವತಿದೇವಿಗೆ ನಿಮಿಷಾಂಬಾ ಎಂಬ ಹೆಸರು ಬಂದಿತು. ತ್ರಿಶೂಲ, ಡಮರು, ಅಭಯ ವರದಗಳಿಂದ ಶೋಭಿಸುವ ಶ್ರೀ ನಿಮಿಷಾಂಬಾ ದೇವಿಯು ಭಕ್ತಜನರ ಕಲ್ಪತರು.

Srirangapatna became a part of Mysore during the period of Raja Wodeyar (1578 – 1617AD). Sri Nimishambadevi temple was constructed during his reign. The temple construction is in Dravidian style. Agama sastras have been followed while constructing this temple. ಶ್ರೀ ರಾಜ ವೊಡೆಯರ್‌ರ ಆಳ್ವಿಕೆಯ ಕಾಲದಲ್ಲಿ ಶ್ರೀರಂಗಪಟ್ಟಣವು ಮೈಸೂರಿನ ಭಾಗವಾಯಿತೆಂದೂ, ಈ ಸಂದರ್ಭದಲ್ಲಿಯೇ, ನಿಮಿಷಾಂಬಾದೇವಿಯ ದೇವಾಲಯವನ್ನು ಕಟ್ಟಲಾಯಿತೆಂದೂ ಐತಿಹಾಸಿಕ ದಾಖಲೆಗಳು ತಿಳಿಸುತ್ತವೆ. ದೇವಾಲಯದ ನಿರ್ಮಾಣವು ಆಗಮಿಕ ಶಾಸ್ತ್ರರೀತ್ಯಾ ಮಾಡಲಾಗಿದೆ. ಇದು ದ್ರಾವಿಡಶೈಲಿಯಲ್ಲಿ ನಿರ್ಮಾಣವಾಗಿದೆ.
