Historical records state that, this historic temple may have been renovated during the reign of Sri. Mummadi Krishnaraja Wodeyar. The temple is constructed in Dravidian style. ಮುಮ್ಮಡಿ ಕೃಷ್ಣರಾಜ ಒಡೆಯರ್‌ಅವರ ಆಳ್ವಿಕೆಯಲ್ಲಿ ಈ ದೇವಾಲಯದ ಅಭಿವೃದ್ಧಿಕಾರ್ಯಗಳು ನಡೆದವೆಂದು ಐತಿಹಾಸಿಕ ದಾಖಲೆಗಳಿಂದ ತಿಳಿದುಬರುತ್ತದೆ. ಈ ದೇವಾಲಯದ ಕಟ್ಟಡವು ದ್ರಾವಿಡಶೈಲಿಯಲ್ಲಿದೆ.

Previously the place where Sri Rama Temple is situated now was a dense forest known as Dandakaranya. Once, Sage Trinabindu decided to undergo penance and searched for water sources around. Unable to source water, he did penance about Lord Narayana. Sometime later Lord Narayana showed him the river flowing underground. Lord promised to yield boon when he takes the Avatar as Rama in Tretayuga and visit this place. ಹಿಂದೆ ಈ ಸ್ಥಳವು ದಟ್ಟವಾದ ದಂಡಕಾರಣ್ಯವೆಂಬ ಕಾಡಿನ ಪ್ರದೇಶವಾಗಿತ್ತೆಂದು ತಿಳಿದುಬರುತ್ತದೆ. ತೃಣಬಿಂಧು ಮಹರ್ಷಿಗಳಿಗೆ ಇಲ್ಲಿ ತಪಸ್ಸು ಮಾಡುವ ಇಚ್ಚೆಯಾಗುತ್ತದೆ. ಸ್ನಾನ, ಜಪ, ಅಹ್ನಿಕ ಗಳನ್ನು ನೆರೆವೇರಿಸಿಕೊಳ್ಳಲಿಕ್ಕೆ ಅವರು ನದೀತೀರವನ್ನು ಹುಡುಕುತ್ತಾರೆ. ಆದರೆ ಅವರಿಗೆ ಇಲ್ಲಿ ಗುಪ್ತಗಾಮಿನಿಯಾಗಿ ಹರಿಯುತ್ತಿರುವ ಕಾವೇರಿಯು ಕಾಣುವುದಿಲ್ಲ. ಅವರು ಶ್ರೀಮನ್ ನಾರಾಯಣನನ್ನು ಕುರಿತು ತಪಸ್ಸು ಮಾಡುತ್ತಾರೆ. ಕಾಲಾನಂತರದಲ್ಲಿ ತಪಸ್ಸಿನ ಫಲವಾಗಿ ಅವರಿಗೆ ಶ್ರೀಮನ್ನಾರಾಯಣಸ್ವಾಮಿಯು ಪ್ರತ್ಯೆಕ್ಷವಾಗಿ ಗುಪ್ತಗಾಮಿನಿಯಾದ ಕಾವೇರಿಯನ್ನು ತೋರಿ, ಹಾಗೆಯೇ ಋಷಿಮುನಿಗಳನ್ನು ಕುರಿತು ಈ ರೀತಿಯಾಗಿ ಅರುಹುತ್ತಾರೆ. ತ್ರೇತಾಯುಗದಲ್ಲಿ ರಾಮನ ಅವತಾರವೆತ್ತಿ ರಾವಣನನ್ನು ಸಂಹಾರ ಮಾಡಿ ನಿಮ್ಮ ಇಷ್ಟಾರ್ಥವನ್ನು ನೆರವೇರಿಸಿಕೊಡುತ್ತೇನೆಂದು ಹೇಳಿ ಅದೃಶ್ಯರಾಗುತ್ತಾರೆ.

A hunter couple named Chuncha and Chunchi would be inhabiting the forest of Dandakaranya, and attack the passersby and eat them up. They are cured of this curse when they chance upon the sage Trinabindu. He states that in their earlier life that they were a Brahmin couple in kashi, who took an oil bath on the No moon day and so were cursed. The salvation was that after some time when a poor man arrives and requests for a piece to cook, the hunter couple oblige to achieve salvation. ಅಲ್ಲಿಯೇ ವಾಸವಾಗಿದ್ದ ಚುಂಚ, ಚುಂಚಿ ಎಂಬ ಬೇಡದಂಪತಿ ಕಂಡ ಜನರನ್ನು ಹೆದರಿಸಿ, ಬೆದರಿಸಿ, ಅವರ ವಸ್ತುಗಳನ್ನು ಕಿತ್ತುಕೊಂಡು ಕೊಂದು ತಿನ್ನುವ ನರಭಕ್ಷಕರಾಗಿದ್ದರು. ತೃಣಬಿಂದು ಮಹರ್ಷಿಗಳನ್ನು ನೋಡಿದ ತಕ್ಷಣ ವಿಸ್ಮರಣೆಯಾಗಿ ಅವರಿಗೆ ಶರಣಾಗುತ್ತಾರೆ. ಅವರ ಶಾಪ ವಿಮೋಚನೆಗೆ ಹಾದಿಯಾಗುತ್ತದೆ. ತೃಣಬಿಂದು ಮಹರ್ಷಿಗಳು ಹೇಳುತ್ತಾರೆ. `` ಹಿಂದೆ, ನೀವು ಕಾಶಿ ದೇಶದಲ್ಲಿ ಬ್ರಾಹ್ಮಣ ದಂಪತಿಗಳಾಗಿದ್ದಿರಿ. ನೀವು ಅಮವಾಸ್ಯೆಯ ದಿವಸ ಅಭ್ಯಂಜನ ಸ್ನಾನ ( ಎಣ್ಣೇ ನೀರಿನ) ಮಾಡಿದ್ದಕ್ಕಾಗಿ ಈ ತೆರನಾದ ಶಾಪ ಬಂದಿತ್ತು. ಒಬ್ಬ ಬಡವ ನಿಮ್ಮ ಬಳಿಗೆ ಬಂದು ಅಡುಗೆ ಮಾಡಿಕೊಳ್ಳಲು ಸ್ವಲ್ಪ ಸ್ಥಳ ಕೇಳುತ್ತಾನೆ. ಅದಕ್ಕೆ ನೀವು ಒಪ್ಪಿ ಸ್ಥಳಾವಕಾಶ ಮಾಡಿಕೊಟ್ಟ ಕಾರಣಕ್ಕಾಗಿ ನಿಮ್ಮ ಶಾಪ ವಿಮೋಚನೆಗೆ ದಾರಿಯಾಗುತ್ತದೆ. ಈ ಕ್ಷೇತ್ರವು ನಿಮ್ಮ ಹೆಸರಿನಿಂದ ಪ್ರಸಿದ್ಧಿಗೆ ಬರುತ್ತದೆ '' ಎಂದು ಹೇಳುತ್ತಾರೆ. ಅಂತೆಯೇ ಈ ಸ್ಥಳವು ಚುಂಚನಕಟ್ಟೆ ಎಂದು ಪ್ರಸಿದ್ದಿಯಾಗಿದೆ.

In tretayuga, Lord Rama visited this place after destroying Ravana. He asked Lakshmana to break the boulder. Lakshmana breaks the boulder by shooting an arrow. Kaveri starts flowing with a loud roar. Rama cursed the river. From then on, no one can hear the sound of the river in the sanctum sanctorum of Sri Rama temple. The place where Lakshmana shot the arrow is popular as Dhanushkodi. ತ್ರೇತಾಯುಗದಲ್ಲಿ ಶ್ರೀರಾಮರು ರಾವಣನನ್ನು ಸಂಹಾರ ಮಾಡಿ ಈ ಕ್ಷೇತ್ರಕ್ಕೆ ಬಂದಾಗ ಲಕ್ಷ್ಮಣ ಸ್ವಾಮಿಗೆ ಬಂಡೆಯನ್ನು ಒಡೆಯಲು ಹೇಳುತ್ತಾರೆ. ಹೊಡೆದ ತಕ್ಷಣ ಬಂಡೆ ಚೂರಾಗಿ ಒಡೆದು ಕಾವೇರಿ ಉಕ್ಕಿ ಹರಿಯುತ್ತಾಳೆ. ಈ ಶಬ್ದವನ್ನು ಕೇಳಲು ಸ್ವಾಮಿಗೆ ಆಗುವುದಿಲ್ಲ. ಆಗ ಹೇಳುತ್ತಾರೆ "ಹೆಣ್ಣಿಗೆ ಇಷ್ಟೊಂದು ನಾಲಿಗೆ ಇರಬಾರದು" ಎಂದು ಉದ್ಗರಿಸಿ, ಶಾಪ ಕೊಡುತ್ತಾರೆ. ಅಂದಿನಿಂದ ಈಗಲೂ ಸಹ ದೇವಾಲಯದ ಗರ್ಭಗುಡಿಯಲ್ಲಿ ಕಾವೇರಿ ಭೋರ್ಗರೆಯುವ ಶಬ್ದ ಕೇಳಿಸುವುದಿಲ್ಲ. ಲಕ್ಷ್ಮಣ ಸ್ವಾಮಿಯು ಬಾಣ ಬಿಟ್ಟ ಸ್ಥಳಕ್ಕೆ ಧನುಷ್ಕೋಟಿ ಎಂದು ಕರೆಯುತ್ತಾರೆ.
